Marshall Football: Herd might be rooting for USM to win C-USA East

With Marshall’s win over Memphis last night and Southern Mississippi’s loss to UAB, Conference USA’s Eastern Division crown won’t be settled until next week. Southern Miss can earn a C-USA championship game appearance by simply beating Memphis a week from Saturday. Marshall needs more help, a win over East Carolina and a USM loss to Memphis.

So why might Marshall fans be rooting for a Thundering Herd and Golden Eagle victory next week?

To be eligible for a bowl game teams must finish no worse than .500. If Marshall beats ECU they will improve to an even 6-6. Lets say USM falters next week and MU wins, catapulting the Herd into C-USA’s championship game. If Marshall lost in the C-USA championship they would finish at 6-7 and not be bowl eligible.

Yes, I might be getting a little bit ahead of my self given Marshall’s performance last night in Memphis but, it dose bring up an interesting question. Is it better to have a chance at winning the C-USA title or going to a bowl game?

*Quick note, a 6-7 team can be invited to a bowl game if less than 70 FBS teams are bowl eligible. Read all about it in this Associated Press article from 2010.
