Louisiana Tech Covets C-USA

The Monroe News Star ran an article today with interview of Louisiana Tech Athletic Director Van De Velde. While Velde did not specifically state his school wanted to move into C-USA the quote below clearly shows that the Bulldogs would like to leave the WAC:

"It's really kind of been that way all along," he said. "It's always been our intention to align ourselves with a conference that is a better geographic fit for us, but offers the same opportunities, power rankings, academic reputation, research — all the things that are important to the university."

Houston to the Mountain West, not so fast

Reports earlier today had Houston moving to the Mountain West but Dennis Todd of CBSsports.com just shot that rumor down on Twitter.

Click here for all the details: http://twitter.com/dennisdoddcbs

Conference USA expansion / realignment ?

C-USA expansion has turned into the wild, wild west. Multiple reports indicate that C-USA and the Mountain West will join forces and form a 20 team super conference. Others report that a C-USA / Mountain West football championship game is in the works for an automatic BCS bid. Moments ago I read that Temple and TCU will jump ship and join C-USA.

Safe to say I don’t have any clue what is going on. Below I have linked articles for each theory. I have also posted a link to Tom Dienhart’s of Rivals.com, Twitter page. Dienhart has a reputation on being ahead of the curve on conference realignment so check with him for up to the minute updates.

Arena season comes to an end for Marshall alumni

Last week Marshall had three players participating in the Arena Football League playoffs, by Saturday night that number hit zero. Bernard Morris (Jacksonville Sharks), Chris Royal (Tulsa Talons) and Jamus Martin (Chicago Rush) were all eliminated in week one of the AFL playoffs.

Morris’s Sharks suffered the most agonizing defeat as the Orlando Predators scored a game winning touchdown with 8.7 seconds reaming. Overall Morris had a very productive AFL season. As a back up quarterback to Arena legend Aaron Garcia, Morris was able to pass for 567 yards on 83 attempts with 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. Morris played a slash role for Jacksonville, he also caught eight passes for 132 yards including 2 touchdowns, rushed for 97 yards with 6 TD’s, and registered 6 tackles on defense. With the AFL expanding in 2011 you might see Morris leading a new team at quarterback next year.

Chris Royal also had a very productive Arena League season. Royal finished second in the league with 11 interceptions and registered 69 tackles. Royal’s Tulsa Talons were eliminated from the playoffs by Tampa Bay 68 – 38 on Saturday.

In four games with the Chicago Rush Martin recorded seven tackles and a forced fumble. Chicago lost to Milwaukee 64 – 54 on Saturday.

Marshall Football: Quarterback Depth Chart?

After today’s practice head coach Doc Holliday and offensive coordinator / QB coach Tony Petersen will cut the quarterback battle from four to three. Currently senior Brian Anderson, Junior (RS) Willy Korn, Freshman (RS) A.J Graham, and true Freshman Eddie Sullivan are competing in the quarterback derby.

I believe that last years starter Brian Anderson will win the starting job. During the first week of drills Anderson was the only quarterback to exclusively practice with the veterans. Anderson was on campus for spring drills which was a huge head start in learning the offense compared to Korn, the transfer from Clemson who most view as Anderson’s main competition. In terms of experience Anderson also leads the pack, last season he threw for over 2,500 yards and 14 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He also has experience playing in hostile environments (started at Virginia Tech and WVU last year) which should come in handy on September 2nd when the Herd kicks off at Ohio State.

The fight for Anderson’s understudy is where things get interesting. Who ever wins the primary back up job will have a inside track on next years starting position. Does Holliday choose Korn, the transfer from a big time program who was a highly recruited out of high school? Do they go with prized Mark Snyder recruit Graham or maybe Sullivan who has looked good in camp and impressed Doc with his leadership skills? I think the smart money is on Korn who, despite his limited experience, has seen more action than Sullivan and Graham combined. You could also argue that coming out of high school Korn was the most highly recruited of the group. He also comes from a high school program (Byrnes High School South Carolina) that is know for throwing around the pig skin.

That leaves coach Holliday with one more backup position to fill. I feel like this spot is the hardest to determine. From all reports Sullivan has looked great during practice and coach Holliday often praises the young signal called during interviews. Graham has almost become the forgotten man during camp. Recent message board chatter has centered around the great unknown of Sullivan’s ability while last season it focused on Graham. It is fair to say that in a maximum of two seasons one of these young guys will start. Personally, I really like A.J Graham, his combination of speed and throwing ability is very intriguing. During spring drills Graham showed the ability to make athletic plays while his decision making was questionable. Sullivan though, does have a few advantages over Graham. First, Holliday recruited Sullivan while Graham was brought in by the old regime. Secondly, Sullivan played in a spread offense in high school that closely mirrors what offensive coordinator Bill Legg has brought to Huntington. My head says Sullivan will win the job. Doug Smock echoed the same message in his Charleston Daily Mail column today. If Sullivan is our third QB I hope he does not have to play. That way he can keep his redshirt and keep a year of eligibility.

Either way by the start of practice tomorrow the quarterback derby will be down one player and we should have a clearer picture of how things will break down.

Suspended Marshall players from Palm Beach County will not be reinstated

Thursday, August 05, 2010
by Jeff Greer

Marshall coach Doc Holliday said late Wednesday that the three Palm Beach County athletes who were dismissed from the Thundering Herd football team would not be reinstated.

Holliday cut Dwyer graduate Mike Fleurizard, Glades Central's Antwon Chisholm and former Pahokee star Fred Pickett from the team, but would not cite a specific reason for their dismissals.

"It's over; they are gone," Holliday told the Charleston Daily Mail. "I issued a statement and that's all I'm going to say about it."

Fleurizard was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with robbery for an incident involving a pizza delivery man with two other unidentified suspects Saturday.

No arrests or charges against Chisholm or Pickett have been made, although a search warrant filed in regards to a second robbery of a different pizza delivery man earlier Saturday by three men indicated Fleurizard and Chisholm were involved.

Antwon Chisholm, Fred Pickett and Mike Fleurizard love free pizza a little to much

A more detailed report has been posted on the Herald Dispatch website: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/homepage/x1790492632/Holliday-dismisses-3-incoming-true-freshmen-from-team

*Report below is an earlier version from the Herald Dispatch*

HUNTINGTON — Three incoming freshmen were dismissed from Marshall University’s football team Wednesday, hours before one of the three was arrested and charged with felony first-degree robbery.

Court documents filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court link running back Antwon Chisholm and defensive tackle Mike Fleurizard to the robbery of a Papa John’s pizza delivery man. The robbery charge then links Fleurizard to the robbery of a Z Brick Pizza delivery man.
Both incidents took place Saturday, July 31.

Fleurizard was the only one facing charges as of 1 p.m. No other arrests have been reported.
Marshall football coach Doc Holliday announced the dismissals at 9:45 a.m. The first-year head coach did not make direct mention of the alleged robberies. He had no further comment when asked following Fleurizard’s arrest.

Holliday said Chisholm, Fleurizard and wide receiver Fred Pickett were sent home to Florida. The Sunshine State natives were to report for the first newcomers practice at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

“We have high expectations of our players and these three have not lived up to what we require of a Marshall University football player,” Holliday said in a prepared statement. “They have lost the privilege of playing football at Marshall and have been dismissed from our football team.”

Pickett has not been named in any court documents, although Fleurizard’s criminal complaint and search warrants state three men were involved in the thefts.

Chisholm, 5-9, 175-pound native of Belle Glade, Fla., was expected to compete for immediate playing time at running back. The same was true for Pickett, a 5-9, 165-pound native of Pahokee, Fla., who was expected to be in the rotation at slot receiver.

Pickett was one of the more high-profile recruits since he originally had given a verbal commitment to West Virginia University. But Holliday was able to get him to renege and eventually sign with Marshall.

Fluerizard, 6-4, 285-pound native of West Palm Beach, Fla., was expected to be redshirted. He was arraigned by Cabell County Magistrate Mike Woelfel and jailed on a $50,000 bond. His pliminary hearing is set for Aug. 13.

The criminal complaint charges Fluerizard threw the Z Brick delivery man to the ground, kicked him in the face and held him down while two other men grabbed the food and $290 in cash. All three fled the scene.

The Z Brick victim identified Fluerizard in a photo lineup.

The departures reduce Marshall’s incoming recruiting class to 22 players.

The case is being investigated by Huntington and Marshall University police departments.
