C-USA: Land of second chances?

Dana O'Neil of ESPN.com has written an interesting article about C-USA basketball coaches centering on Matt Doherty & Larry Eustachy. I would highly recommend reading it, link below:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=oneil_dana&id=4940844

A few quotes from the story:

"I've sat in conference meetings and thought, 'This is some frigging broken-down, dead refugee camp,'" Eustachy said. "It's kind of like Afghanistan."

"We're not a BCS league, but we're not a mid-major," Doherty said. "We're the next best thing."

"I miss the money," Eustachy said with a smile. "But I'm grateful to be here. I'm sure Matt is, too. I look at other people -- my good friend Kelvin Sampson, for instance -- who I know would be thrilled to be where I am."

Whiteside wins rookie award again

From the Herald Dispatch: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x802130901/Whiteside-wins-rookie-award-again

HUNTINGTON — Hassan Whiteside from the Marshall University men’s basketball team was named as the Conference USA rookie of the week for the fifth time this season.
Whiteside, a 7-foot freshman, averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.5 blocked shots in Marshall victories over Tulsa and at Tulane.

The nation’s leading shot blocker (142) is one shy of the C-USA record.

Marshall’s next game is Wednesday at Rice.

ESPN: C-USA Spring Football Preview

ESPN.com ran a preview today of each C-USA football team heading into spring practice. This is what they had to say about Marshall:

Marshall Thundering Herd
Spring practice starts: TBA
Spring game: TBA

What to watch:
New head coach Doc Holliday said his immediate concern is the kicking game after Craig Ratanamorn graduated and with backup Tyler Warner struggling. Warner will have a chance to win the job in the spring, but freshman Justin Haig will be the favorite when he arrives in the fall.

When Darius Marshall left early for the NFL, it opened up the running back competition between Martin Ward and Terrell Edwards. Former coach Mark Snyder was high on both players, but they’ll have to impress their new coach with a star running back coming in August.

After Cody Slate went down with injury, Antavious Wilson emerged as the Thundering Herd’s go-to receiver. He should see plenty of action in Marshall’s stretch offense, but the Herd will need to develop more options, including Aaron Dobson, Lee Smith and Charles Walker.

*2008 statistics

MARSHALL

Marshall is coming off a 22-32 overall record in 2009 with 19 letterwinners returning. Four of the top six hitters are back for the green and white with C/INF Victor Gomez leading the charge. The junior was selected to the preseason first team All-Conference USA squad after an impressive 2009 campaign. Last season, Gomez launched a team-best 18 homers and 62 RBI.

Senior INF Josh Valle led the club last year in batting average (.337) and hit even stronger against C-USA competition (.420). Redshirt sophomore Rhett Stafford registered a .293 batting clip with six homers, while junior Kenny Socorro returns as the incumbent at shortstop for the Herd. Socorro recorded a .280 average in 2009 and led the team in assists (140) and helped convert 38 double plays.

Right-handed pitcher Ian Kadish will take the ball from head coach Jeff Waggoner in the first game of the series. The junior was used strictly as a reliever a year ago, making all 19 appearances out of the bullpen, had a standout fall for the Herd. Kadish earned MVP honors in the fall Green/White Series by posting a 2-0 record allowing only two earned runs in 11.0 innings with 14 strikeouts.

SAMFORD

The host Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 17-35 and bring back all starting position players from last season's team. Samford, who competes in the Southern Conference, will look to David Schulze as an offensive force. Schulze, a senior OF, batted .335 with 10 homers and 57 RBI in 2009. Wayne Miller returns to roam CF for the Bulldogs after hitting .339 along with swiping 24-of-26 steal attempts.

Jonathan Stephens is slated to toe the rubber in the season opener. A redshirt senior, Stephens sat out the 2009 season due to an injury. In 2008, he went a perfect 7-0 on the hill with a 2.88 ERA.

Hassan Whiteside 50-50 on Going Pro

From Mitch Vingle at the Charleston Gazette: http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/todayssportscolumn/201002170739?page=2&build=cache

"There's a possibility,'' Whiteside said after the game. "It's 50-50. It depends on how highly [NBA officials] are talking about [drafting] me. There's also talk of a lockout. So that will come into play.

"But I've been wanting to play in the NBA since I was 2. After the season, I'll decide. I need to get stronger and have so much to work on. Right now, I'm enjoying the Herd.''

C-USA Men’s basketball tournament seating

Five teams are battling for four first round byes in the C-USA men’s basketball tournament. Each team UTEP, Memphis, UAB, Tulsa, and Marshall have four conference games left. Below I have gone through each teams remaining schedule and predicted wins and losses:

UTEP

@ Tulsa W
@ Southern Miss W
Rice W
@ Marshall L
UAB W

14 -2, 23 - 6

Memphis

SMU W
@ Houston W
Southern Miss W
@UAB L
Tulsa L

12 – 4, 22 - 9

UAB

Houston W
@ UCF W
Tulane W
Memphis W
@UTEP L

12 – 4, 24 - 6

Tulsa

UTEP L
@ Duke L
@ ECU W
SMU W
@ Memphis W

11 – 5, 22 - 9

Marshall

@ Tulane W
@ Rice W
UCF W
UTEP W
@ SMU L

11 – 5, 23 – 8

If the each team finishes with the record above the final standings will look like this:

UTEP 14 -2
Memphis 12 – 4
UAB 12 -4
Marshall 11 - 5
Tulsa 11- 5

Marshall would own the tie breaker over Tulsa due to a better record against the conferences best team (UTEP). Memphis would be the second seed over UAB because of the Tigers one win and no losses to Marshall compared to UAB’s 1 - 1 record against the Herd.

How do you think things will finish in C-USA, leave your predictions in the comments section.

From the Charleston Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/MUSports/201002050341

Chad Pennington's 1st and 10 Foundation has awarded $70,000 to organizations throughout West Virginia, including two in Cabell County, for the Fall 2009 grant cycle.

The foundation, which awards grants on a semi-annual basis, issued $135,500 to organizations in West Virginia in 2009.

Since its inception in 2003, the foundation has distributed $930,999 in funds to organizations in the foundation's geographical areas, including over $700,000 in West Virginia.

Local organizations to receive funding include Operation BEST and Children's Place, both in Cabell County.

The foundation has given funding to purchase supplies and equipment to allow Operation BEST to move into all Cabell County Schools. The program works to provide students with communications, critical thinking, problem solving and team building skills that will make them more marketable in the workforce.

Funding to Children's Place, an early learning center located in east Huntington, will help replace carpet, buy new furniture and dinnerware for the group.

The next deadline for submitting a grant application is Feb. 15. Grant application requests can be sent to: 1st and 10 Foundation, P.O. Box 192, Guild, NH 03754 or via email at direc...@1stand10foundation.com.

Willy Korn expected to announce transfer to Marshall today

From Doug Smock at the Charleston Gazette: http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/Marshall/201002031069

Willy Korn, the Clemson quarterback who has decided to get finish his bachelor's degree and transfer, is expected to announce today he will go to Marshall.

Korn, who started a game in 2008 but suffered a shoulder injury, will transfer without penalty and have two years remaining. By NCAA rules, if he pursues a master's program at Marshall that is not offered at Clemson, he avoids sitting out a year.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore from Lyman, S.C., started the first game after Dabo Swinney took over as head coach in midseason, but was injured on the 14th play. After losing the battle for the starting job to freshman Kyle Parker, he played in six games in mop-up duty, going 12-of-17 for 90 yards, with a touchdown rushing and one passing.

Korn will make the 2010 fall camp very interesting at the quarterback position, now coached by Tony Petersen. Mark Cann and Brian Anderson are starters of the last two years, with senior Press Taylor also in the battle. The younger candidates are redshirt freshman A.J. Graham and incoming freshman Eddie Sullivan.

Holliday Talks about first Recruting Class

From: http://marshall.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1048095

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Head Football Coach Doc Holliday announced the Thundering Herd's 2010 football signing class Wednesday.

"Our goal as a staff was to sign a class good enough to win Conference USA. I believe we met our goal and exceeded expectations in terms of numbers and the quality of student-athletes we have signed," Holliday said. "We have high expectations of these young men on the football field and in the classroom."

Holliday's first recruiting class at Marshall features 25 student-athletes from six different states, many of whom were rated three of four stars by most recruiting services. Thirteen of Marshall's signees hail from the state of Florida, four are from Virginia, three from Georgia, two from North Carolina, two from South Carolina and one from Ohio.

Marshall's class was balanced in terms of position needs with the Thundering Herd bringing in four defensive backs, four wide receivers and four offensive linemen to lead the way. Overall, The Thundering added student-athletes at 12 different positions, including two listed as athletes.

In all, 23 student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to play at Marshall on Wednesday. Linebacker Trevor Black and long snapper/tight end James Power enrolled at Marshall in January and will take part in spring practice.

Marshall's Big Day in South Florida

From the High School Buzz blog at the Palm Beach Post: http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/highschoolbuzz/2010/02/03/big-out-of-state-winners-marshall-wake-forest/

Marshall coach Doc Holliday did not get everyone he wanted in Palm Beach County, but the Thundering Herd still came away with an impressive crop of talent.

Despite signing on as head coach just six weeks ago, Holliday stole recruits from West Virginia and Wake Forest and Rivals.com rated his incoming class as the fifth best in Conference USA.

He landed a total of six local players, including two top-20 prospects: Boca Raton quarterback Eddie Sullivan and Pahokee receiver Fred Pickett.
The Thundering Herd also signed Glades Central running back Antwon Chisholm and receiver Demetrius Evans, Dwyer lineman Mike Fleurizard and American Heritage kicker Justin Haig.

“I think they got some great players,” Dwyer coach Jack Daniels said. “Pickett’s a great receiver and is extremely quick. Chisholm is a guy who could take it the distance any time he touches the ball. They’re going to run a spread offense and I think Eddie Sullivan is a really good fit.

“Mike’s really come from nothing, but he really turned it around. He needed something in his life to motivate him and give him direction.”

Fleurizard, who was the Panthers’ best blocker last season and could play offense or defense at Marshall, turned down a late push by Central Florida.

Evans and Haig could turn out to be the hidden gems of Marshall’s Palm Beach County collection. Evans was Glades Central’s No. 3 receiver last year and Haig was a finalist for the Lou Groza high school kicker of the year award.

“I think we’re bringing one of the best recruiting classes in all of Conference USA,” Haig said. “We’re going to be a team to reckon with.”

Marshall also targeted Glades Central safety Travis Bell and American Heritage receiver Darius Millines, but they signed with West Virginia and Illinois, respectively.

Harold “Gator” Hoskins

Looks like there is a lot of interest in Harold "Gator" Hoskins a unknown recruit to many Herd fans before singing a letter of intent today.

Hoskins played quarterback at Eastside High School in Gainesville Florida. During the 2008 - 2009 season he squared off against current Marshall quarterback A.J Graham. Graham’s Godby high school won the game but Hoskins scored four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing.

This year Hoskins passed for over 1,100 yards and ten touchdowns to eight interceptions. Hoskins also rushed for 517 yards and ten touchdowns. Playing a slash type role he also punted 15 times for a 37.6 yard average and registered four tackles on defense.

Hoskins could play multiple position at the college level. Think of him as this years C.J Crawford, Hoskins could end up at wide receiver, corner, or safety.

When the need for a new football coach came up for Mike Hamrick, the first-year director of athletics at Marshall went looking for a cure to what ails the Thundering Herd program.

He wound up with “Doc”, as in Doc Holliday, who slipped on a green jacket on Dec. 17. Call it an early holiday for Thundering Herd fans.......

Where will Bell, Millines, Corbett, & Chisholm land?

Jason Lieser of the Plam Beach Post high school buzz blog predicts where a few Marshall targets might land today:
http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/highschoolbuzz/2010/02/02/predicting-answers-to-signing-day%e2%80%99s-questions/

Glades Central DB Travis Bell

Bell (6-2, 186, No. 7 on The Big Board) was one of several players to commit to West Virginia on a visit last September. He never budged on that promise until Marshall hired away Doc Holliday and Jajuan Seider. He committed to Marshall, but immediately backtracked and said he still was considering West Virginia.

PREDICTION: West Virginia. No offense to Marshall, but Bell is out of the Thundering Herd’s league. He had offers from many BCS schools and was Glades Central’s most pursued recruit. It is difficult to imagine him stepping down from a BCS program to Marshall. Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart has been in Palm Beach County lately and likely smoothed over any hurt feelings.

American Heritage WR Darius Millines

Millines (6-0, 175, No. 16 on The Big Board) committed to West Virginia on the same trip as Bell. He also was with Bell when he went to Marshall. There were rumors that Millines committed to Marshall, but he and American Heritage coach Doug Socha said those reports were false. Since then, Illinois has jumped into the mix.

PREDICTION: Illinois. Millines visited the Fighting Illini last week and sounded very excited about it. Head coach Ron Zook flew down for a home visit and might have sealed Millines’ signature in the process. Illinois is a spread team and would be a great fit for him.

Glades Central DL Isiah Corbett

Corbett (6-1, 250, No. 33 on The Big Board) had 85 tackles and 10 sacks after transferring from Royal Palm Beach prior to last season. He went largely unnoticed by major college scouts until late in the season, but committed to Iowa State in December. He later visited Marshall and opened himself back up to all schools.

PREDICTION: Marshall. Doc Holliday can’t get everybody he wants, but he will add Corbett to a pretty solid group of Palm Beach County players headed to the Thundering Herd.

Glades Central DB/RB Antwon Chisholm

Chisholm (5-8, 165, No. 38 on The Big Board) has two confirmed de-commitments on his record and possibly a third. He made a surprising announcement early in the football season that he was committed to Oklahoma State. That lasted a month or so before he committed to Mississippi State. Multiple Glades Central sources said last month he committed to Marshall, but Chisholm denied it.

PREDICTION: Brigham Young or Yale. I honestly have no clue. I drew those names out of a hat. If I have to be serious, I guess it’s Marshall.

Mike Fleurizard Solid on Marshall

From: http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/highschoolbuzz/2010/01/31/after-visit-to-ucf-mike-fleurizard-committed-to-marshall/

Dwyer defensive tackle Mike Fleurizard was rumored to be a Marshall commit and now it’s solidified.

Fleurizard was deciding between Central Florida and Marshall. After visiting UCF this weekend, he informed Dwyer coach Jack Daniels he intends to sign with the Thundering Herd on Wednesday.

Fleurizard (6-1, 285, No. 41 on The Big Board) had 35 tackles as a senior, including 11 sacks.

He is Marshall’s fourth confirmed commit from this area. The school also has commitments from Boca Raton quarterback Eddie Sullivan and Pahokee wide receiver Fred Pickett. Glades Central safety Travis Bell committed to Marshall, too, but later said he was equally interested in signing with West Virginia.

All commitments are non-binding. No player is locked into a school until he signs a national letter of intent. The first day seniors can sign is Feb. 3, national signing day.
