Hassan Whiteside Working Back from Injury

From the Sacramento Bee: http://www.sacbee.com/2010/10/21/3120224/kings-notes-offense-so-bad-evans.html

More progress – Rookie center Hassan Whiteside continues to make progress rehabilitating his strained left patellar tendon. The knee injury has cost him almost all of training camp. Whiteside went through a pregame workout Tuesday and was on the practice court Wednesday in a limited role.

"We had Whiteside back for at least some 5-on-0 things, so that was nice to see him out there," Westphal said. "He has a lot of catching up to do, but we all do."

Whiteside said Tuesday's work was his first time jumping in some time.

"It's still sore, but it ain't too bad," Whiteside said of his knee.

Whiteside said he would have his knee examined today to gauge when he can increase his workload and he looks forward to getting on the court full time soon.

With Whiteside making progress, the only player who didn't practice was center Samuel Dalembert (groin).

WVU AD Oliver Luck: “I do see value in playing Marshall"

The following passage comes for Jack Bogaczyk column in today’s Charleston Gazette, read the whole thing here: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/201010191290

When you're in this seat, you don't pass up an opportunity to ask the athletic director at both schools about the tenor of talks and potential for the continuation of the WVU-Marshall football series beyond the seven-year contract's games at Mountaineer Field in 2011 and 2012.

Luck said the state's two major programs will continue to play, but what form the series will take remains up in the air.

"There is value in us playing Marshall and it is a series that will continue," Luck said, "and that's probably about all I'm going to tell you, because I told (Marshall AD) Mike Hamrick that I wouldn't (negotiate in the media). I do see value in playing Marshall."

Luck admitted the Sept. 10 game in Huntington, won by WVU in overtime, was an eye-opening experience for him.

"I tell you what, it was very impressive, an impressive atmosphere, an excellent ballgame," the West Virginia AD said. "It was the only game that Friday night and my son (Stanford star QB Andrew Luck) said he came back from team meeting and he and all of his friends watched the game. So, it got a lot of attention.

"The TV ratings (2.55 on ESPN) were good, and that's good for sponsor, the Friends of Coal, good for both schools, good for the state. I do think there's some value in us playing. I was very impressed with game day atmosphere, for that one day, at the beginning of season, it was the sort of hotspot in college football.

"Beyond that on Marshall, I'm just not going to comment."

Marshall Football: Patience is Needed

Like many Herd fans I was excited when the football season got under way this September. Unfortunately five losses has hurt my enthusiasm for this Marshall bunch. Last nights game was another reminder that the road back to “We Play for Championships” will be long.

At a minimum I thought Marshall would match last years record and be bowl eligible but new schemes on offense and defense have been difficult to over come. This is where patience comes into play. As last nights game wound down I contemplated how long it would take Marshall to compete with schools like Southern Mississippi, Central Florida, and East Carolina. After giving it some thought I think this is going to be a three season process.

Needless to say this year is a wash. The players on this squad do not fit the type of offense or defense Doc Holliday wants to run. This is painfully obvious when offensive coordinator Bill Legg calls a read option for Brian Anderson. Marshall has to many square pegs that this staff is trying to fit into round holes. Situations like this happen all the time when a new coach comes in with a totally different way of moving the ball. Take a look at Rich Rodriguez’s first years at Michigan and WVU. The defense is still getting use to coordinator Chris Rippon’s aggressive style of play. Not to mention the young secondary is extremely short on college experience.

Next seasons schedule looks extremely difficult . Non-conference road games include WVU, Louisville, and Ohio while Marshall gets a “break” with Virginia Tech at home. In conference the Herd plays UCF, ECU, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and Houston. Keep in mind the coaching staff will be breaking in a new quarterback with minimal experience while also replacing three starting offensive lineman. I don’t see the running game improving, even if Travon Vann is all world, with three underclassmen in the trenches. On defense the Herd losses all C-USA player Mario Harvey but could be better. The secondary will have a years worth of experience under their belts and Vinny Curry should continue his dominance at defensive end. I would not be surprised if the defense is Marshall strength in 2011- 2012. Even if the Herd improves stopping the opposition next years offense could still be a work in progress, especially with the tough schedule.

2012 - 2013 is where I see a chance to compete for a conference championship. Doc Holliday recruits will dominate the roster and each true freshman that saw action this season will be entering their junior year. At quarterback Eddie Sullivan or A.J Graham will have a strong grip on the starting spot entering year two as head signal caller. The dynamic duo of Aaron Dobson and Antavious Wilson will be entering their senior season while the offensive line returns three starters. At running back Andre Booker and Martin Ward will be seniors with Vann also in the mix. On defense Marshall’s two starting cornerbacks will be three year starters with Donald Brown at safety while a young defensive front seven is buoyed by James Rouse, Trevor Black, and Brandon Sparrow. If the Herd can’t compete by Holliday’s third season we might have a Mark Snyder size problem on our hands.

This does not mean you should stop supporting Marshall football for the next two years. Hopefully Doc proves me wrong and the Herd is competing much earlier than I expect. Even though this season has been a disappointment don’t let it kill your enthusiasm. At the end of the day Marshall is still YOUR UNIVERSITY and each one of our players / coaches deserves support. Lets keep up the good fight and do every thing we can (JOIN THE BIG GREEN TODAY) to improve our program.

Go Herd!

Mike Bianchi's Amateur Hour

Mike Bianchi is a sports columnist / blogger at the Orlando Sentinel. After UCF’s dominance of Marshall last night Bianchi posted some harsh words on his “Open Mike” blog about the Herd. I have posted a link to his post below (1).

His story does not bother me, needles to say UCF has dominated Marshall in football since joining C-USA and the Donnie Jones situation is still an open wound. What bothers me is Bianchi heading over to HerdNation.com and posting a link to his story. I have include a link to the post below (2). Why is a serious (and I use the term loosely) journalist like Bianchi posting his garbage on a message board? In my book that is a pretty cheap way to increase hits for your website. I get posting something like that on a UCF message board but Bianchi’s attempt to stir the pot on HerdNation screams of armateur hour. My advice to Bianchi is keep off message boards and stick to what he does best, writing children’s books about University of Florida athletics: http://www.amazon.com/Gator-Alphabet-ABC-Marisol-Novak/dp/1582614032/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1287063259&sr=1-1

Marshall Football Updates

Charleston Daily Mail reporter Chuck McGill has posted a number of tweets about yesterdays practice. He reports that Eddie Sullivan is getting a lot of reps but for the first time AJ Graham is listed as co-backup quarterback. Even though Graham has moved up on the depth chart he watched yesterdays practice on crutches.

Coach Holliday also stated on his radio show last night that both Brian Anderson and Sullivan will play against UCF. Holliday made a similar pledge before the Ohio game but Anderson was the only quarterback to see playing time. Graham could also be in the mix but he must practice in order to play.
