According to Bret McMurphy of CBS Sports, the Mountain West and Conference USA are no longer considering a plan to dissolve and form a new league. Instead, the two conferences will merge or remain separate but form an agreement for scheduling and television.
Plans to dissolve stalled when conference leaders learned they would not be able to keep NCAA Basketball Tournament units earned in previous years. Teams collect around $250,000 for their league for each round they advance in the tournament and that money is distributed to each member on a rolling six year period.
On a similar front, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News reports that both leagues would forfeit any exit fees from departing members (i.e. – SMU, Houston, SMU, UCF, Memphis) if the two conferences dissolved.
