Marshall University Hall of Famer Mike D’Antoni has been tabbed as the Los Angeles Lakers next head coach. D’Antoni takes over for Mike Brown who was let go after Los Angeles started the season 1-4.
A Mullens West Virginia native, D’Antoni played for the Thundering Herd from 1970-1973, and still holds Marshall’s career assist per game record with 8.23 per contest. Marshall retired his jersey number, ten, in 2009, becoming the seventh player to receive the honor.
During his ten year stint as a NBA head coach, D’Antoni has amassed a record of 388-339 with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks. He also served as an assistant coach on Mike Krzyewski’s gold medal winning, USA basketball team during the 2012 London Olympics.
