HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A former Marshall University football player was back in court Thursday morning.
Hiram Moore's attorney filed a motion to reconsider Moore's sentence.
Moore was convicted on drug charges last May, but was given a second chance to go back to school and earn a master's degree. However, Moore said he dropped out of school after a problem getting his financial aid.
In early March, Judge Alfred Ferguson sentenced Moore to one to five years in prison because Ferguson said Moore didn't properly notify the court of his whereabouts or status.
Thursday, in front of a courtroom packed with supporters for Moore, his attorney argued he has a strong support system. She said she’s received a number of letters from prominent members of the community commending Moore for his strong character and potential. She said he’s successfully completed a “Celebrate Recovery” Christian-based addiction recovery program and become very active in his church.
Ferguson said he’s impressed with the show of support and recognizes Moore’s intelligence, but still isn’t convinced Moore will use that intelligence for good. Judge Ferguson said he would consider the case and would make a decision at a later date.
