In a drawn out contest that featured 79 fouls, it was appropriate
that Marshall’s DeVince Boykins had a chance to score the game winning shot
from the free throw line. Morehead State put Boykins at the charity stripe with
the score tied at 86-86 and just over one second left on the clock. The sophomore’s
first attempt barley hit the rim and his second shot completely missed the
basket. After a desperation heave and miss by Morehead the game headed for
overtime.
The Eagles completed their comeback from a 21 point first
half deficit, outscoring Marshall 16-8 in the extra period to secure a 102-94
victory at Johnson Arena.
Elijah Pittman lead all scorers with 31 points but, it was
not enough to overcome 26 Thundering Herd turnovers, nine alone by point guard Kareem
Canty.
Marshall returns to action this Thursday in the Cam
Henderson Center against Stephen F. Austin, tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
