Brennaman Apologizes for “queer” Statement

In article by Cinncinatti.com(http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110207/SPT04/102080353/Brennaman-No-offense-to-gays) Cincinnati Reds radio announcer Mary Brennaman apologized for using the term “queer” while referring to Marshall University president Stephen Kopp.

"I probably could have made a better choice of words, but in no way does that reflect my opinion about gays at all. It's just a comment I made about the president of the university."

Although Brennaman apologized for using the slang term he has not backed down from his opinon on Kopp not attending Saturday’s baseball banquet.

"My point was he's willing to spend ($2.5) million for girls' softball, but he won't even attend a baseball banquet trying to raise money to build a baseball facility."

Yesterday I explained in detail why Marshall has a new on-campus softball stadium but no baseball field. I also dived into Kopp’s steadfast support of Marshall athletics. (http://marshallthunderingblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/marty-brennaman-out-of-line-at-mu.html)

It seems to me that Brennaman is one of those guys who can’t get out of his own way. Brennaman is known for his controversial comments during Reds radio broadcast. In June of 2007 Brennaman apologized for comparing a upcoming Reds road trip to the Bataan Death March. In a 2008 incident Brennaman called Chicago Cubs fans “the most obnoxious fans in baseball” which he later apologized for.

Even in his apology for using the word queer Brennaman takes a stab at Marshall’s softball team by referring to them as girls. Yes, our softball is populated by a all female roster but it is woman’s softball Brennaman, no different from the men’s basketball or soccer.

I understand that Brennaman is appraoching his 70th birthday but it is time for him to catch up with the 21st century or maybe the Reds should find some one else who can.
