Marshall Football: Expanded C-USA Leads to Schedule Change & New Divisions

When Conference USA officially expanded to 14 football playing members next fall, Marshall’s football schedule, along with every other league member needed to be modified.

In December we reported a 2013 football schedule that looked like this:

2013 Marshall Football Schedule
August 31st – Miami (Ohio)
September 7th – Gardner-Webb
September 14th – at Ohio
September 21st – at Virginia Tech
TBA – Southern Miss
TBA – at Louisiana Tech
TBA – UAB
TBA – at Tulane
TBA – North Texas
TBA – at UTEP
TBA – ECU
TBA – at FIU

According to the Twitter account of Charleston Daily Mail reporter Derek Redd, the Thundering Herd’s new lineup of conference opponents will include ECU, USM, UTSA, and UAB at home with road games at FAU, FIU, MTSU, and Tulsa. No dates have been set.

Here is an updated look at Marshall’s 2013 football schedule:

Updated 2013 Marshall Football Schedule
August 31st – Miami (Ohio)
September 7th – Gardner-Webb
September 14th – at Ohio
September 21st – at Virginia Tech
TBA – USM
TBA – at FAU
TBA – UAB
TBA – at FIU
TBA – UTSA
TBA – at MTSU
TBA – ECU
TBA - at Tulsa

Also, Brett McMurphy of ESPN is reporting that C-USA’s division lineup for football in 2013 will look like this:

East
1) Marshall
2) ECU
3) FAU
4) FIU
5) MTSU
6) Southern Miss
7) UAB

West
1) Louisiana Tech
2) North Texas
3) Rice
4) Tulane
5) Tulsa
6) UTEP
7) UTSA

As you can see, modifying Marshall’s schedule was necessary to ensure that the Herd would play all of its east division foes. This was accomplished by removing one game against a cross division opponent.
