At the Marshall Thundering Blog we pride ourselves on following the careers of former Thundering Herd players as they transition from college to professional sports. While Marshall’s closest tie to the NBA is Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, three alumni are active players in the NBA Developmental League.
1) Tirrell Baines, Forward, Erie Bayhawks
Playing his second season in Erie, Tirrell Baines is the Bayhawks leading contributor off the bench. In 24 games the undersized forward is averaging 24.8 minutes, 10.4 points, and 4.7 rebounds per game.
2) Hassan Whiteside, Center, Rio Grande Vipers
Marshall’s latest NBA draft pick, Hassan Whiteside found himself out of the association when he was cut by the Sacramento Kings in July. Attempting to put his once promising career back on track, Whiteside joined the Sioux City Skyforce where he played seven games before being traded to the Rio Grande Vipers. In ten games with the Vipers, the seven footer is averaging 8.5 minutes, 4.8 rebounds, 4.5 points, and 1.9 blocks per game.
3) Tyler Wilkerson, Forward, Austin Toros
After playing with their Summer League team and earning a training camp invite, Tyler Wilkerson was waived by the San Antonio Spurs in October. Since being released Wilkerson has played with the Austin Toros, San Antonio’s D-League affiliate. Starting all 23 games the Kentucky native is averaging 28.3 minutes, 13.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game.
Notes – A one year player with the Thundering Herd after transferring from N.C. State, Johnny Thomas was a member of the Springfield Armor before being cut in early December. Marshall also has a number of alumni playing overseas, we will profile them at a later date.
