Marshall Basketball: Capital Classic Preview

Basketball king of the Mountain State will be crowned tonight when Marshall (5-3) meets WVU (2-3) for the annual Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center.

The Herd enters tonight’s contest on a three game winning streak but, the offense has struggled. In wins over Morehead State and UNC Wilmington, Marshall shot just 34% (40-115) from the floor and a paltry 20% (7-34) from three point range. Ball movement has also been a issue, during that same two game stretch the Herd has only recorded 19 assist, 12 of them by point guard DeAndre Kane.

WVU is no stranger to offensive struggles either. In three meetings against the RPI top 150 (Oklahoma, Gonzaga, and Davidson) the Mountaineers averaged just 60 points per game.

After sitting out last season per NCAA transfer rules, former Dayton point guard Juwan Staten is leading the WVU offense. He is one of only two Mountaineers averaging double digit points (10.8 per game). Center Aaric Murray and his 6-foot-10, 245 pound frame is the second leading scorer at 10.2 points per game.

One thing both teams do well is rebound. Marshall ranks 16th in division one basketball with 42.8 boards per game. WVU sits just behind the Herd, averaging 40.4 rebounds per contest.
