Two future members of Conference USA are looking for a new football coach.
In a surprise move FIU fired Mario Cristobal on Wednesday. Cristobal lead the Golden Panthers to the school’s first Sun Belt Conference championship in 2010 and two bowl game appearances (2010 & 2011). FIU entered this season with high expectations but, a porous defense and multiple injuries on offense resulted in a 3-9 record. In five years at the Miami based school Cristobal accumulated an overall record of 27-47. Potential replacements include former Kentucky coach Joker Phillips, former California Berkeley head coach Jef Tedford, and Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley.
After piloting the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs for the past three seasons Sonny Dykes accepted the head coaching position at Cal this week. Although La.Tech’s coaching search has just begun, a list of candidates has emerged including Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Texas Tech offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
On a unrelated note, former Southern Miss head coach Ellis Johnson was hired by Auburn to be the Tigers new defensive coordinator.
