Junior Victor Gomez of the Marshall University baseball team was named to the watch list for the 2010 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza. The award is given to the nation’s top catcher by the Greater Wichita Sports Association.
Gomez, who was also named to the first team Preseason All-Conference USA squad, was among five catchers from the C-USA to be selected to the prestigious watch list.
During the 2009 season, Gomez led the team in homers (18), RBI (62), hits (72), total bases (143), extra-base hits (33), slugging percentage (.659), multi-hit games (23) and multi-RBI games (21).
In 2010, the backstop has collected eight hits in 28 at bats (.286), with a pair of doubles, one homer and six RBI.
The watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists, whom will be announced May 19, 2010. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, 2010 prior to the NCAA Regionals and Major League Baseball Draft. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2010.
