It was an opening night to remember in the Cam Henderson Center as Marshall defeated South Carolina State 85-69.
The Thundering Herd offense was spearheaded by last seasons leading scorer Elijah Pittman who recorded a career high 31 points. Playing their first game in a Marshall uniform, starting point guard Kareem Canty (17) and forward Ryan Taylor (15) also scored in double digits. Taylor added ten rebounds to finish with a double-double.
A All-Mideastern Athletic Conference Preseason First Team selection, South Carolina State forward Matthew Hezekiah lead the Bulldogs with 19 points.
Marshall returns to action on Tuesday against NAIA member Rio Grande (Oh.). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center.
