Marshall defensive end Albert McClellan has been invited to participate in the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 24-March 2 at Indianapolis.
There are rumors that former Marshall running back Darius Marshall, who decided to forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft as a junior, also has been invited to the NFL Combine.

UAB Players Scuffle with Marshall Student

A confrontation began inside The Hot Corner bar on Fourth Avenue late Saturday night. It started with words of disagreement between four male UAB basketball players and Marshall students regarding the results of the basketball game earlier that evening. But when the chance to return to the baseball field arose, Cann jumped.
“It was just an opportunity given to me,” Cann said Tuesday. “I just felt like I wanted to approach it and see what happens.”

"I think the difference in us and other teams ... I think that we've been in this situation a lot," UAB Coach Mike Davis said. "We played at Arkansas, won on a last second shot. Played with Virginia down the stretch of the game. Played Samford, three-point game, last shot we won. SMU, down 243 and come back and win in the very end. Southern Mississippi.
"We've been here before. You don't want to be in these situations, but at the same time we have and I think that was the difference in these two basketball teams."
Last nights loss was disheartening but will serve as a great learning experience for the Herd. Lets hope the team can grow from these disappointments and become a better basketball team in March and beyond.

Marshall vs. Memphis Tonight!

Marshall says goodbye to Rick Minter

It's official. Rick Minter is not going to be retained on new MU football coach Doc Holliday's staff.
"I was told Monday they're going in a different direction," said Minter, who had been defensive coordinator and interim coach for MU's Little Caesars Pizza Bowl win over Ohio.
"I was happy here for two years. It was fun being a part of Herd football. It was fun to see the kids play really, really well in the bowl game."
Minter got the future off to a good start in the bowl game. He should be remembered for that.

I already linked this in today’s Marshall sports news but I think it deserves its own post. According to Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch, Marshall basketball coach Donnie Jones has inked a new four year contract. Athletic Director Mike Hamrick declined to talk about the possible extension:
"Donnie and I have had a few discussions about his future," said Hamrick. "At the appropriate time, we'll make that known."
If the rumored extension is true Jones would be at Marshall through the 2013 – 2014 season.

DB Joe Johnson Commits to Marshall

New Smyrna DB Joe Johnson likes what he sees going on at Marshall under the guidance of new football Coach Doc Holliday, and he's decided he wants to be a part of it.
Johnson committed to the Thundering Herd this past weekend during a recruiting trip.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back, ranked No. 58 in the Sentinel's Central Florida Top 100, is just one of many Florida commitments Holliday has lured his way. Marshall has 20 commitments for the 2010 recruiting class, including nine from Florida.

New Smyrna DB Joe Johnson likes what he sees going on at Marshall under the guidance of new football Coach Doc Holliday, and he's decided he wants to be a part of it.
Johnson committed to the Thundering Herd this past weekend during a recruiting trip.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back, ranked No. 58 in the Sentinel's Central Florida Top 100, is just one of many Florida commitments Holliday has lured his way. Marshall has 20 commitments for the 2010 recruiting class, including nine from Florida.

Bad News for Bernard Morris
The Jacksonville Sharks have added veteran area football quarterback Aaron Garcia to there roster. Garcia has thrown for over 40,000 yards during his arena football career.
Former Marshall quarterback Bernard Morris was assigned to the Sharks earlier this month and now appears to be fighting for a back up spot rather than a starting role.
The Jacksonville Sharks are a first year franchise in the new Arena Football One league.

Only a limited amount of $9 general admission tickets are available for the UAB at Marshall men's basketball game Saturday night (7pm) in Cam Henderson Center.
Business hours for the Cam Henderson Center ticket office are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday. The ticket office opens at 3 p.m., Saturday, before the 7 p.m. game.

McNeill reportedly hired as East Carolina coach

Former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will become the next head coach at his alma mater, East Carolina, ESPN's Joe Schad reports via Twitter.
McNeill was named the Red Raiders' interim coach for the Alamo Bowl after Mike Leach was suspended last month for the alleged mistreatment of wide receiver Adam James. McNeill led the team to a 41-31 victory over Michigan State.
After Leach was fired, McNeill interviewed for Texas Tech's vacancy, but former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was hired instead.
At East Carolina, McNeill will replace Skip Holtz, who left to coach South Florida. In addition to playing defensive back for the Pirates in the late '70s, McNeill was their defensive line coach in 1992.

“I just spoke to their coach, Coach (Lonnie) Galloway. He is offering me a scholarship. He said he’s coming to my house sometime next week.”
Hopefully Louis is a strong verbal commitment and has called off his remaining visits. Like I mentioned this is an older article that was published before his commitment yesterday and I have not found any info if he still attends to visit other schools.

Out Door Academy (FL) TE/DE Jamie Onufrak was one of former head coach Mark Snyder's first verbal commitments. Onufrak has disappeared from Marshall's commitment list on Rivals.com. From his Rivals page it looks like Onufrak has re-opened up his recruitment.

Hans Louis commits to Marshall Football

Hans Louis, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Fla., has verbally committed to Marshall to play football.
Louis was named the Broward County defensive player of the year after this past season. His 16 sacks were tops both in Broward and Dade counties and he had three interceptions in helping the Lions reach the Class 2B state semifinals.
"He's a fast kid,'' said Chaminade-Madonna coach Tim Tyrrell. "I expect him to play right away. He's an impact-type of kid.''

Football Recruits Confirmed for this Weekend

Marshall head coach Doc Holliday -coming off a successful recruiting weekend last week which saw nine high school players verbally commit to play for the Herd- is lining up more talent to visit campus this weekend. Herd Insider Magazine has confirmed that the following players will make an official visit this coming weekend of January 23 and 24:
Tony Zenon – 5’7” 160 pounds from Deerfield H.S. Albany GA, plays QB for his high school team but projects to be a RB or DB. Zenon runs a 4.5 forty and had 2,268 yards rushing and 27 TDs this past year. He has offers from Marshall, UAB and Georgia Southern. Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson reportedly is making an in-home visit this week.
Marvin Ford – 5’9” 190 pounds RB from Dr. Phillips H.S. in Orlando, FL. Has made a verbal commitment to Colorado State. He runs a 4.5 forty and has a vertical leap of 30 inches. Also was recruited by UNC and Cincinnati.
A.J. Scott – 6’5”, 275 pounds from Robert E. Lee H.S., Staunton VA. Is already a Marshall verbal commitment.

More football recruits commit to Marshall
HUNTINGTON – Jamming two and a months of recruiting into two and a half weeks appears not a problem for Marshall University football.
New Thundering Herd head coach John “Doc” Holliday and his recently hired assistants assembled an impressive group of prospects for their initial recruiting weekend. More impressive is the result – numerous verbal commitments from high-profile student-athletes.
Illustrating the strength of Marshall’s burgeoning recruiting class is the commitment of Brian Robinson. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound safety from St. Thomas Aquinas, a perennial Florida high school power, is rated among the nation’s top 50 safety prospects. The four-star standout also was offered scholarships by Ole Miss, Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, WVU and Rutgers.
Fellow Florida high school standout Antwon Chisholm offers versatility to this year’s recruiting class. The 5-9, 175-pound multiple offensive-special teams threat initially committed to Mississippi State and also received offers from Southern Miss, Rutgers and West Virginia. Chisholm has been timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Fred Pickett, similar in size and speed to Chisholm, also has verballed to Marshall as a Florida high school senior. The Pahokee native, a playmaking wide receiver, originally committed to West Virginia and also was offered by Florida State.
Defensive line certainly is a priority and has been addressed with Brandon Sparrow’s commitment. The 6-4, 250-pound tackle from Bedford (Va.) boasts athleticism and a frame capable of adding considerable weight.
T.J. Ross, a 5-11, 195-pound outside linebacker from Durham (N.C.), projects at numerous positions for the Thundering Herd. The Southern High School standout also received considerable ACC interest.
Like Sparrow, Chris Head features upside in terms of size. At 6-5 and 205 pounds, the playmaking tight end from Jackson (Ga.) certainly will add bulk under new strength and conditioning coach Frank Piraino.
Each visited campus this weekend, highlighted by Saturday night’s dynamic atmosphere during Marshall’s men’s basketball victory over Tulane. Recruiting continues this week, leading to national signing day on Feb. 3.

First big recruiting weekend for Doc Holliday and I’m already exhausted.
There are, supposedly, 18 potential future Herd football players visiting. Initially, it was believed that three-star defensive back prospect Travis Bell, a verbal to West Virginia University, was among them.
Bell was quoted in a post on a WVU sports related site as saying, essentially, that was hogwash.
I did some checking up on this situation and was told, again, that Bell IS visiting. I haven’t seen him with my own eyes and I won’t be in Huntington until Saturday night for the hoops game, so that’s all I have to go on.
So there, it’s settled: Travis Bell is in Huntington, unless he’s somewhere else, then he’s not.
Case closed.

Immediately following the news of Holliday being named head coach of The Thundering Herd, Bell explained that he was re-opening his recruitment and taking a look around to make sure WVU was still the best fit for him.
Considering his close relationship to both Holliday and Seider, Marshall became a logical destination that Bell would potentially consider. However, it appears that possibility has not come to fruition.
Reports that Bell intended to visit Marshall this weekend are false, Bell explained.
“Says who?,” Bell asked when posed the question about the reported coming visit. “I’m not going there.”
Bell said that he is solid with WVU and that he is not taking anymore recruiting visits.

Marshall offers two Nature Coast (FL) football players *UPDATE*

Nature Coast coach Mark Lee spent the past few days at the American Football Coaches Association in Orlando talking to former coworkers. Among them was first-year Marshall coach Doc Holliday, who was hired in December. Lee worked with Holliday at West Virginia in 1999.
The result of their brief reunion was a pair of scholarship offers for Nature Coast senior running back Tevin Drake and junior receiver/defensive back Ja'Juan Story.
Drake spoke with Holliday on Wednesday morning and will take an official visit to the school next week. He has plans to visit Western Michigan this weekend.
Drake, who finished as the North Suncoast's second leading rusher of all-time with 4,981 career yards and 69 touchdowns, had an offer from Miami last summer (it was later rescinded) and turned down an offer to take an official visit to Minnesota. He also had been in communication with Oregon and Georgia at various points of the recruiting process. Drake said Wednesday in a text message he also has offers from Florida International, Florida Atlantic and Memphis.
"They can't believe he's available," Lee said. "When Doc talks that highly of a kid that's a good thing. He's one of the top recruiters in the country."
Story received his first offer in August from Florida International. Lee said there's a lot of interest surrounding the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Story.

Tom Dienhart, a Rivals.com and Yahoo Sports writer has reported via twitter that Chris Rippon has interviewed for Marshall’s open defensive coordinator position http://twitter.com/TomDienhart. Rippon’s last coaching stop was a Rutgers where he served as special teams coordinator for one season. Contradicting reports from various outlets say Rippon was either fired from Rutgers or left to pursue other opportunities.
Prior to Rutgers Rippon spent three years at Ole Miss as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. Before his tenure at Ole Miss, Rippon spent 12 years at Syracuse, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1999-2003 along with the duties of special teams coordinator from 1995-98 and in 2004.

Darius Marshall Going Pro?
ESPN college football analysis Joe Schad reported via twitter that junior Marshall running back Darius Marshall will declare for the NFL draft http://twitter.com/schadjoe/status/7643657240. Doug Smock of the Charleston Gazette wrote a story about Marshall’s possible departure (http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/Marshall/201001110602) but was unable to talk to him. Smock was able to get a hold of Marshall’s father who was not aware of his son’s decision to go pro. The deadline for underclassman to declare for this years draft is Friday.
Recent events could have affected Marshall’s impending decision to go pro. According to Smock Marshall was dismayed over the departure of former head coach Mark Snyder and his position coach Jared Smith. Also, if you recall Marshall had to be “persuaded” by former interim head coach Rick Minter to play in the Bowl game. Here is a excerpt from a Charleston Gazette story that ran on December 15th 2009:
"He (Darius Marshall) comes out first day of practice, comes out in sweats," Minter said. "I won't give you the exact usage of words, but I came over to the trainer and said, 'Tell me about Darius' health.' He said, 'Coach, he has not been to treatment, which is not unusual, so I'll just say he's healthy.' "I went over to Darius and I said, 'Darius, do you want to play in the bowl game?' He started staring and I said, 'What about that did you not understand? Do you want to play in the game?' 'Yeah.' And I said, 'You've got about two minutes to get in there and get dressed. Otherwise, keep walking. Keep walking.'

If Marshall does declare Martin Ward, Terrell Edwards-Maye, and Andre Booker would be returning players left to pick up the slack. Ward, who will be a redshirt sophomore, rushed for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns during the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and was named game MVP.

The Men’s basketball team tips off at 7pm Saturday against East Carolina in Greensborough. Hopefully the game is streamed live on Channelsurfing.net as 93.7 the Dawg is no longer broadcasting games over the internet.
The lady’s will be hosting there annual Jam the Cam promotion this Sunday. If you can’t afford a $1 ticket to the 5pm tip off against Southern Mississippi please watch the game on ESPN2.

Tre Whitted Continues Basketball Career
This was reported last week in the Herald Dispatch but I think it deserves a highlight here.Former Marshall basketball player Tre Whitted has found a job with the NBA Developmental leagues Springfield Armor. Whitted has played in fifteen games staring four while averaging 5.7 points with just over one rebound and assist in twenty minutes per contest. Before starting this season with Springfield Whitted played for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs (CBL) in 2007 and the Rochester Razor Sharks (PBL) in 2008.

The Star News (Wilmington NC newspaper) wrote a story about Whitted’s professional basketball career. Purdue vs Marshall Official
Per PurdueSports.com, the Universities official athletics website:
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
The Purdue football team has scheduled a home-and-home series with Marshall.
The Boilermakers will play host to the Thundering Herd on Sept. 29, 2012, and make a return trip to Huntington, W.Va., on Sept. 16, 2017.
Purdue and Marshall have not previously met. Boilermaker defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo was an assistant with the Thundering Herd from 2001 to 2003 before coming to Purdue.

The Purdue football team has scheduled a home-and-home series with Marshall.
The Boilermakers will play host to the Thundering Herd on Sept. 29, 2012, and make a return trip to Huntington, W.Va., on Sept. 16, 2017.
Purdue and Marshall have not previously met. Boilermaker defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo was an assistant with the Thundering Herd from 2001 to 2003 before coming to Purdue.

Did you know that former Marshall “Young” Thundering Herd quarterback Reggie Oliver played professional football? After completing his eligibility with Marshall in 1974 Oliver was signed by the World Football Leagues Jacksonville Sharks. Oliver got his first action in Jacksonville’s sixth game of the season against Orlando and almost lead the Sharks to a come from behind victory. After the near miss against Orlando Oliver held on to the starting quarterback job and took Jacksonville to a 4 – 10 record. Running the same veer offense he mastered at Marshall Oliver passed for 1,415 yards with seven touchdowns and twelve interceptions. Transfers, Ineligible, and Purdue
A couple of big news items in Chuck Landon’s article today, http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x300703687/Holliday-delays-hire-of-defensive-coordinator
Here is a break down:
“Two players have left Marshall's program. They are quarterback Jake Laudenslayer, who was redshirted last season after joining the Herd as a junior college transfer, and linebacker Corey Hart, a junior who appeared in only six games last season”
Laudenslayer’s departure leaves Marshall with Brian Anderson, Mark Cann, Press Taylor, and A.J Graham as scholarship quarterbacks. Anderson and Taylor only have one year of eligibility remaining so quarterback would be a nice addition to this upcoming recruiting class.
Tough to lose Corey Hart but Marshall has a strong group of young linebackers egger to step into the rotation next year.
“In other player news, defensive tackles Johnny Jones and Brandon Bullock were academically ineligible for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Both are expected to regain their eligibility next semester.”
Mystery solved, guess Marshall was not releasing this information before the bowl game. Lets hope Jones and Bullock are in good academic standing come spring practice.
“And the Big Ten opponent is. ... Purdue.
Marshall and the Boilermakers have agreed on a home-and-home series, according to sources. The Herd will play at West Lafayette, Ind., in 2012, then host Purdue in 2017.
And don't be afraid of Purdue not showing at Edwards Stadium.
The contract includes a $500,000 buyout clause.”
My prediction holds up as Purdue is the latest BCS opponent scheduled to visit Joan C. Edwards stadium, albeit in 2017. Hopefully $500,00 is still a large buyout by 2017.
The 2012 schedule only has one out of conference opening left. So far in 2012 Marshall will be at WVU and Purdue while Ohio visits Huntington. Look for Mike Hamrick to add another non-BCS conference school to round out our future opponents.
