From Chuck Landon of the Herlad Dispatch: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x300716116/Rippon-is-working-as-defensive-coordinator
There were several new faces in Marshall's Shewey Building this weekend.
They didn't all belong to football prospects making official visits, either.
Besides the prospects, there also was Marshall's new defensive coordinator.
Say hello to Chris Rippon (pronounced Rip-ON).
Although Marshall hasn't formally announced the hiring, Rippon is here and on the job.
He completes new Herd head football coach Doc Holliday's staff.
Launched on July 27th 2009, the Marshall Thundering Blog is a independent Marshall University website that pulls Herd athletic information into one place. We are the webs best source for free Thundering Herd football and basketball recruiting news.

Marshall defensive end Albert McClellan has been invited to participate in the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 24-March 2 at Indianapolis.
There are rumors that former Marshall running back Darius Marshall, who decided to forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft as a junior, also has been invited to the NFL Combine.

5 New Marshall Verbal Commitments
From the Herald Dispatch: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/x818846440/Marshall-University-football-secures-four-more-verbal-commitments
Jermaine Kelson, 5-7, 156, ATH, Miami Southridge H.S. (Fla.): Southern Florida has proven productive during recruiting season, and Kelson ranks among the area’s more diverse playmakers. Kelson, who reportedly had committed to Central Michigan, lined up at quarterback in high school but projects at several Division I-A positions.
Josh Lovell, 6-6, 270, L, Christchurch School (Va.): Lovell ranks as the nation’s No. 28 tight end prospect by www.scout.com. His athleticism, however, could allow Lovell to segue to offensive tackle. He also enjoyed a standout defensive end career at Christchurch.
Maryland, West Virginia and South Carolina also offered Lovell.
Randy Richards, 6-4, 310, C, College of Sequoias (Cal.): Immediate offensive line impact is a priority in this year’s recruiting class. Richards reportedly had committed to New Mexico State and also was offered by Arkansas.
Justin Haig, 5-10, 170, K, American Heritage H.S. (Fla.): West Virginia offered Haig, who also received strong interest from Miami (Fla.) and Vanderbilt. Haig was a high school teammate of Marshall verbal commitment Darius Millines.
Stefon Grace, 6-4, 200, ATH, Cincinnati North College Hill (Ohio): The rangy wideout has served as a top playmaker at the perennial Division IV contender. Grace received interest from both Mid-American Conference and Big Ten schools. He’s lined up at numerous positions, including wide receiver, linebacker and defensive end.

Mark Cann Giving Baseball Another Crack
From Gary Fauber of the Beckley Register-Herald: http://www.register-herald.com/sports/local_story_026233719.html
Mark Cann is in no way done with football. He will be at spring drills and would like to win back his starting quarterback position when Marshall ushers in the Doc Holliday era in August.
But when the chance to return to the baseball field arose, Cann jumped.
“It was just an opportunity given to me,” Cann said Tuesday. “I just felt like I wanted to approach it and see what happens.”

Darius Marshall to NFL Combine
From Doug Smock’s Inside Marshall Sports Blog at the Charleston Gazette: http://blogs.wvgazette.com/dougsmock/
I will seek a little additional confirmation to make sure, but I was told tonight that Darius Marshall has been invited to the Combine. If so, I consider that a pleasant surprise… hey, I do want him to do well, as Ahmad Bradshaw before him.

UAB Coach Mike Davis Said it Best
UAB basketball coach Mike Davis discussing the difference between Marshall and UAB after last weeks game:
"I think the difference in us and other teams ... I think that we've been in this situation a lot," UAB Coach Mike Davis said. "We played at Arkansas, won on a last second shot. Played with Virginia down the stretch of the game. Played Samford, three-point game, last shot we won. SMU, down 243 and come back and win in the very end. Southern Mississippi.
"We've been here before. You don't want to be in these situations, but at the same time we have and I think that was the difference in these two basketball teams."
Last nights loss was disheartening but will serve as a great learning experience for the Herd. Lets hope the team can grow from these disappointments and become a better basketball team in March and beyond.

Marshall vs. Memphis Tonight!
Marshall says goodbye to Rick Minter
From: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x300714102/Jones-new-deal-extends-a-good-thing-for-Marshall
It's official. Rick Minter is not going to be retained on new MU football coach Doc Holliday's staff.
"I was told Monday they're going in a different direction," said Minter, who had been defensive coordinator and interim coach for MU's Little Caesars Pizza Bowl win over Ohio.
"I was happy here for two years. It was fun being a part of Herd football. It was fun to see the kids play really, really well in the bowl game."
Minter got the future off to a good start in the bowl game. He should be remembered for that.

Marshall Basketball: Donnie Jones Secret Extension?
I already linked this in today’s Marshall sports news but I think it deserves its own post. According to Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch, Marshall basketball coach Donnie Jones has inked a new four year contract. Athletic Director Mike Hamrick declined to talk about the possible extension:
"Donnie and I have had a few discussions about his future," said Hamrick. "At the appropriate time, we'll make that known."
If the rumored extension is true Jones would be at Marshall through the 2013 – 2014 season.

DB Joe Johnson Commits to Marshall
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/recruiting/os-recruiting-joe-johnson-commits-to-marshall-126,0,7552784.story
By Chris Hays
Orlando Sentinel
New Smyrna DB Joe Johnson likes what he sees going on at Marshall under the guidance of new football Coach Doc Holliday, and he's decided he wants to be a part of it.
Johnson committed to the Thundering Herd this past weekend during a recruiting trip.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back, ranked No. 58 in the Sentinel's Central Florida Top 100, is just one of many Florida commitments Holliday has lured his way. Marshall has 20 commitments for the 2010 recruiting class, including nine from Florida.
"We're trying to change things around up there and about 85 percent of those boys are from Florida. We're going to take over the world soon," Johnson laughed. "Nah but really, that's why I committed up there. It feels like home even though it's far away."
Holliday was assistant coach at West Virginia prior to taking the Marshall job last month. He was the Mountaineers' main recruiting force in Florida but when he left for Marshall, his Florida pull followed.
Johnson picked Marshall over USF, Tennessee State and Western Michigan.
"It was way better than I thought it would be," Johnson said of his visit. "I was blown away by the coaching style. I got the feeling that I was going to be in great hands."
Johnson's ability to play both cornerback and safety will allow his some versatility at Marshall and likely allow him a more speedy ascent up the depth chart.
"I know how to play both positions really well. I watch a lot of film," Johnson said. "And I'll play wherever it will help the team."
"They told me I might be able to start right away. I talked to Coach Doc and he really wanted me to be part of what they are doing. So now I'm part of the Herd."

• It was already known that Thundering Herd commitment Trevor Black had enrolled at Marshall. Today we learned that long snapper James Power (http://rivals.yahoo.com/marshall/football/recruiting/player-James-Power-89259) also started school at Marshall and will be available for spring practice.
• Darien Moody (http://rivals.yahoo.com/marshall/football/recruiting/player-Darien-Moody-949280), a defensive end from Ohio who committed during the Mark Snyder regime will not be part of Doc Holliday’s first recruiting class. Moody is the second player recruited by Snyder to re-open his commitment, Jamie Onufrak also de-committed earlier this month.

Bad News for Bernard Morris
The Jacksonville Sharks have added veteran area football quarterback Aaron Garcia to there roster. Garcia has thrown for over 40,000 yards during his arena football career.
Former Marshall quarterback Bernard Morris was assigned to the Sharks earlier this month and now appears to be fighting for a back up spot rather than a starting role.
The Jacksonville Sharks are a first year franchise in the new Arena Football One league.

Raheem Waiters to Greyshirt
From the Charleston Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/MUSports/201001250017?page=2&build=cache
RIVERSIDE STAR wide receiver Raheem Waiters is verbally committed to Marshall, but will not be a part of Holliday's inaugural Herd recruiting class.
Waiters, who is rehabilitating a knee injury, has been asked to greyshirt, according to Riverside Athletic Director Jason Cantrell.
Waiters will not enroll at Marshall until January 2011. His eligibility clock will not start until the Fall of 2011, when he could redshirt and sit out a second season or play immediately.
Waiters' senior season came to an abrupt end when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Oct. 9 against George Washington. The 6-2 receiver, who originally committed to Mark Snyder in June, had 77 receptions for 1,289 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final three seasons with the Warriors.

Recruiting: Something to Think About
Found a Wall Street Journal article from December about the correlation between getting top recruits and participating in a bowl game.
Do you think the amount of top 100 rated recruits on a teams roster impacts a university’s chance of going bowling? Find out here:

This Weekends Recruiting Visits
JARRED HAGGINS, 6-0, 180, ATHLETE, LAKELAND H.S., FLA.
Look no farther than the list of offers for "Scooter" Haggins to learn that he ranks as an elite prospect. Florida State, Florida, Ohio State, Louisville, Tennessee and South Florida also have offered Haggins, who has verbally committed to FSU.
Haggins played quarterback at perennial power Lakeland and is rated No. 48 nationally as a safety prospect.
TEVIN DRAKE, 5-FOOT-11, 187 POUNDS, RB, NATURE COAST H.S., FLA.
Rushed for more than 1,500 yards in each of two seasons and totaled 51 rushing touchdowns overall during his career. He averaged at least 7.4 yards a carry in each season and is rated No. 108 overall nationally at his position.
JOSH LOVELL, 6-6, 270, OL, CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL, VA.
Combining size and athleticism, Lovell played tight end and defensive end last season, but could segue to offensive line. He's rated as the nation's No. 28 tight end prospect by www.scout.com.
Lovell also has been offered by West Virginia and Maryland.
A.J. SCOTT, 6-5, 272, DE, ROBERT E. LEE H.S., VA.
Defensive line certainly is a priority in this year's recruiting class and the front was early addressed. Scott, an every-down end, was the Thundering Herd's first verbal commitment of the 2010 class.
TONY ZENON, 5-8, 158, RB, DEERFIELD-WINDSOR H.S., GA.
Although rushing for more than 5,000 yards during his high school career, Zenon largely has been overlooked on recruiting radars. Despite being transplanted from his Louisiana home following Hurricane Katrina, Zenon has carved a stellar career in Georgia.
GARRETT SCOTT, 6-4, 270, OL, COFFEE COUNTY H.S., GA.
Scott provides the needed bulk in Marshall's defensive interior. Along with Marshall, Troy, UAB, Arkansas State and Jackson State have offered.
JOE JOHNSON, 5-11, 173, S, NEW SMYRNA BEACH H.S., FLA.
Johnson totaled 85 tackles and six interceptions and broke up 16 passes as a high school senior. Marshall, South Florida, Western Michigan and Tennessee State have offered the playmaker.
DARRYL ROBERTS, 5-11, 154, CB, LAKELAND H.S., FLA.
Roberts joins high school teammate Haggins this weekend in Huntington. His senior season highlights included a 77-yard interception return to the end zone.

McNeill reportedly hired as East Carolina coach
From the Sporting News at: http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-21/mcneill-reportedly-hired-east-carolina-coach
Former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will become the next head coach at his alma mater, East Carolina, ESPN's Joe Schad reports via Twitter.
McNeill was named the Red Raiders' interim coach for the Alamo Bowl after Mike Leach was suspended last month for the alleged mistreatment of wide receiver Adam James. McNeill led the team to a 41-31 victory over Michigan State.
After Leach was fired, McNeill interviewed for Texas Tech's vacancy, but former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was hired instead.
At East Carolina, McNeill will replace Skip Holtz, who left to coach South Florida. In addition to playing defensive back for the Pirates in the late '70s, McNeill was their defensive line coach in 1992.

Bob Huggins Verbally Attacks Marshall Fans
Great blog post by Reevis, a disk jockey at 92.7/98.5 The Planet about WVU coach Bob Huggins verbally attacking Marshall fans at the end of last nights game. Read it here: http://reevis927.blogspot.com/2010/01/hey-huggins-heckling-is-part-of-life.html
Hans Louis to visit WVU?
From a SoFLAfootball.com article published on January 8th:
Hans Louis discussing upcoming recruiting visits –
“I have Marshall set up on the 15th, West Virginia is on the 22nd, and Western Kentucky on the 29th.”
Louis visited Marshall last weekend and verbally accepted a scholarship yesterday. I have not seen any information in regards to Louis still visiting WVU and WKU.
In the same article Louis mentioned WVU had already offered a scholarship -
“I just spoke to their coach, Coach (Lonnie) Galloway. He is offering me a scholarship. He said he’s coming to my house sometime next week.”
Hopefully Louis is a strong verbal commitment and has called off his remaining visits. Like I mentioned this is an older article that was published before his commitment yesterday and I have not found any info if he still attends to visit other schools.

Hans Louis commits to Marshall Football
From the Charleston Gazette:
Hans Louis, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Fla., has verbally committed to Marshall to play football.
Louis was named the Broward County defensive player of the year after this past season. His 16 sacks were tops both in Broward and Dade counties and he had three interceptions in helping the Lions reach the Class 2B state semifinals.
"He's a fast kid,'' said Chaminade-Madonna coach Tim Tyrrell. "I expect him to play right away. He's an impact-type of kid.''

Football Recruiting Visiting This Weekend?
From Chuck McGill's blog at the Charleston Daily Mail:
"The football staff is still lining up visitors for this weekend. Right now there’s only three names on that list, but the staff is out on the trail right now conducting in-home visits and will surely line up more trippers over the next 24-48 hours."

A few quotes from huggy bear
On Hassan Whiteside -
"When you get a 6-11 guy in the middle that's leading the country in blocking shots, it's going to make a difference," Huggins said. "And I think they can show some different things defensively because of him, because they've got a goalkeeper. It's hard to get it at the basket against him."
On Marshall -
"Well I think they went through a year ago a little bit what I think we're going through with our new guys in that they weren't as consistent," Huggins said. "I think they're a lot more consistent, they are really making shots."
About the rivalry -
"Generally when you have rivalries like Duke-North Carolina, Xavier-Cincinnati, where there's proximity and all that, they're really physical games," he said. "And these games haven't been physical."

Marshall Quarterback Rumor
As reported by Greg Perry on the Herd Insider (www.goherd.com)
Rumors, Notes, etc– The word we are hearing is that The Herd may be in line for a major QB transfer from a traditional college football power. This transfer would have two years left to play upon transfer to Marshall. We have the name, but will have to do more research on the rumor.
Any ideas on who it could be?

Herald Dispatch Reports 6 New Commitments
http://www.herald-dispatch.com/news/briefs/x1153716504/More-football-recruits-commit-to-Marshall
More football recruits commit to Marshall
HUNTINGTON – Jamming two and a months of recruiting into two and a half weeks appears not a problem for Marshall University football.
New Thundering Herd head coach John “Doc” Holliday and his recently hired assistants assembled an impressive group of prospects for their initial recruiting weekend. More impressive is the result – numerous verbal commitments from high-profile student-athletes.
Illustrating the strength of Marshall’s burgeoning recruiting class is the commitment of Brian Robinson. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound safety from St. Thomas Aquinas, a perennial Florida high school power, is rated among the nation’s top 50 safety prospects. The four-star standout also was offered scholarships by Ole Miss, Miami (Fla.), Tennessee, WVU and Rutgers.
Fellow Florida high school standout Antwon Chisholm offers versatility to this year’s recruiting class. The 5-9, 175-pound multiple offensive-special teams threat initially committed to Mississippi State and also received offers from Southern Miss, Rutgers and West Virginia. Chisholm has been timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
Fred Pickett, similar in size and speed to Chisholm, also has verballed to Marshall as a Florida high school senior. The Pahokee native, a playmaking wide receiver, originally committed to West Virginia and also was offered by Florida State.
Defensive line certainly is a priority and has been addressed with Brandon Sparrow’s commitment. The 6-4, 250-pound tackle from Bedford (Va.) boasts athleticism and a frame capable of adding considerable weight.
T.J. Ross, a 5-11, 195-pound outside linebacker from Durham (N.C.), projects at numerous positions for the Thundering Herd. The Southern High School standout also received considerable ACC interest.
Like Sparrow, Chris Head features upside in terms of size. At 6-5 and 205 pounds, the playmaking tight end from Jackson (Ga.) certainly will add bulk under new strength and conditioning coach Frank Piraino.
Each visited campus this weekend, highlighted by Saturday night’s dynamic atmosphere during Marshall’s men’s basketball victory over Tulane. Recruiting continues this week, leading to national signing day on Feb. 3.
Marshall likely will receive additional commitments on Sunday. Click on www.herald-dispatch.com for updates.

- PLEASE go to the basketball game! Doc Holliday will be hosting 18 potential Marshall football players and a packed Henderson center could sway their decision in the Herds favor.
Chuck McGill: Travis Bell WILL visit Marshall this weekend!
From Chuck McGill at the Charleston Daily Mail:
http://blogs.dailymail.com/marshall/2010/01/15/travis-bell-who-the-hell-knows/
Travis Bell: He is somewhere in the lower 48. I think.
First big recruiting weekend for Doc Holliday and I’m already exhausted.
There are, supposedly, 18 potential future Herd football players visiting. Initially, it was believed that three-star defensive back prospect Travis Bell, a verbal to West Virginia University, was among them.
Bell was quoted in a post on a WVU sports related site as saying, essentially, that was hogwash.
I did some checking up on this situation and was told, again, that Bell IS visiting. I haven’t seen him with my own eyes and I won’t be in Huntington until Saturday night for the hoops game, so that’s all I have to go on.
So there, it’s settled: Travis Bell is in Huntington, unless he’s somewhere else, then he’s not.
Case closed.

Travis Bell not Visiting?
From: http://www.eersports.com/fb-recruiting/football-recruiting-home/276-eersports-on-the-recruiting-trail-jan-14
Bell Says he won't visit MarshallBelle Glade, Fla., safety Travis Bell was among the WVU recruits most affected by the departures of former assistant Doc Holliday, now head coach at Marshall, and graduate assistant JaJuan Seider, who followed Holliday to become running backs coach.
Immediately following the news of Holliday being named head coach of The Thundering Herd, Bell explained that he was re-opening his recruitment and taking a look around to make sure WVU was still the best fit for him.
Considering his close relationship to both Holliday and Seider, Marshall became a logical destination that Bell would potentially consider. However, it appears that possibility has not come to fruition.
Reports that Bell intended to visit Marshall this weekend are false, Bell explained.
“Says who?,” Bell asked when posed the question about the reported coming visit. “I’m not going there.”
Bell said that he is solid with WVU and that he is not taking anymore recruiting visits.
Fred Pickett, a wide receiver from Pahokee, Fla., who is also verbally committed to the Mountaineers, was also believed to be visiting Marshall. Pickett has been unreachable for comment since Holliday left WVU and Bell did not know of Pickett’s intentions either. “I don’t really talk to Fred, so I don’t know,” Bell said.

WVU recruits switching to Marshall?
Best part of Chuck McGill’s Daily Mail article today: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/MarshallFootball/201001140043?page=2&build=cache
Two visitors - Travis Bell and Fred Pickett - might ruffle feathers in Morgantown. Bell and Pickett previously pledged to West Virginia.
Bell, a three-star defensive back prospect by both Scout.com and Rivals.com, hails from Glades Central (Fla.) High School, the alma mater of new Marshall running backs coach JaJuan Seider, who followed Holliday to Huntington from WVU.
Pickett, also a three-star recruit, is a 5-foot-9 receiver from Pahokee, Fla., another football hotbed where Holliday has strong ties.
Do you think Pickett will chat with Antavious Wilson, who also graduated from Pahokee and led the Herd in receiving yards as a freshman this past season?

Marshall offers two Nature Coast (FL) football players *UPDATE*
*UPDATE*
Nature Coast head coach Mark Lee, Doc Holliday's contact at the school, was fired yesterday:
http://hometeam.tampabay.com/blog/2010/jan/13/football-nature-coast-fires-mark-lee-after-one-season/
*UPDATE*
From TampaBay.com (http://hometeam.tampabay.com/recruiting/2010/jan/13/football-nature-coasts-tevin-drake-and-jajuan-stor/)
Nature Coast coach Mark Lee spent the past few days at the American Football Coaches Association in Orlando talking to former coworkers. Among them was first-year Marshall coach Doc Holliday, who was hired in December. Lee worked with Holliday at West Virginia in 1999.
The result of their brief reunion was a pair of scholarship offers for Nature Coast senior running back Tevin Drake and junior receiver/defensive back Ja'Juan Story.
Drake spoke with Holliday on Wednesday morning and will take an official visit to the school next week. He has plans to visit Western Michigan this weekend.
Drake, who finished as the North Suncoast's second leading rusher of all-time with 4,981 career yards and 69 touchdowns, had an offer from Miami last summer (it was later rescinded) and turned down an offer to take an official visit to Minnesota. He also had been in communication with Oregon and Georgia at various points of the recruiting process. Drake said Wednesday in a text message he also has offers from Florida International, Florida Atlantic and Memphis.
"They can't believe he's available," Lee said. "When Doc talks that highly of a kid that's a good thing. He's one of the top recruiters in the country."
Story received his first offer in August from Florida International. Lee said there's a lot of interest surrounding the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Story.

Chris Rippon Interviews for Marshall Defensive Coordinator
Tom Dienhart, a Rivals.com and Yahoo Sports writer has reported via twitter that Chris Rippon has interviewed for Marshall’s open defensive coordinator position http://twitter.com/TomDienhart. Rippon’s last coaching stop was a Rutgers where he served as special teams coordinator for one season. Contradicting reports from various outlets say Rippon was either fired from Rutgers or left to pursue other opportunities.
Prior to Rutgers Rippon spent three years at Ole Miss as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. Before his tenure at Ole Miss, Rippon spent 12 years at Syracuse, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1999-2003 along with the duties of special teams coordinator from 1995-98 and in 2004.

It is safe to assume that these recruits will be at Marshall’s home basketball game against Tulane on Saturday January 16th so a large crowd could persuade some of these young men to commit. Your attendance would be appreciated!

Darius Marshall Going Pro?
ESPN college football analysis Joe Schad reported via twitter that junior Marshall running back Darius Marshall will declare for the NFL draft http://twitter.com/schadjoe/status/7643657240. Doug Smock of the Charleston Gazette wrote a story about Marshall’s possible departure (http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/Marshall/201001110602) but was unable to talk to him. Smock was able to get a hold of Marshall’s father who was not aware of his son’s decision to go pro. The deadline for underclassman to declare for this years draft is Friday.
Recent events could have affected Marshall’s impending decision to go pro. According to Smock Marshall was dismayed over the departure of former head coach Mark Snyder and his position coach Jared Smith. Also, if you recall Marshall had to be “persuaded” by former interim head coach Rick Minter to play in the Bowl game. Here is a excerpt from a Charleston Gazette story that ran on December 15th 2009:
"He (Darius Marshall) comes out first day of practice, comes out in sweats," Minter said. "I won't give you the exact usage of words, but I came over to the trainer and said, 'Tell me about Darius' health.' He said, 'Coach, he has not been to treatment, which is not unusual, so I'll just say he's healthy.' "I went over to Darius and I said, 'Darius, do you want to play in the bowl game?' He started staring and I said, 'What about that did you not understand? Do you want to play in the game?' 'Yeah.' And I said, 'You've got about two minutes to get in there and get dressed. Otherwise, keep walking. Keep walking.'
Marshall has been the Herd’s starting running back for two seasons racking up 2,771 yards and 19 touchdowns. If Marshall does declare Martin Ward, Terrell Edwards-Maye, and Andre Booker would be returning players left to pick up the slack. Ward, who will be a redshirt sophomore, rushed for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns during the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and was named game MVP.

Tre Whitted Continues Basketball Career
This was reported last week in the Herald Dispatch but I think it deserves a highlight here.
Former Marshall basketball player Tre Whitted has found a job with the NBA Developmental leagues Springfield Armor. Whitted has played in fifteen games staring four while averaging 5.7 points with just over one rebound and assist in twenty minutes per contest. Before starting this season with Springfield Whitted played for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs (CBL) in 2007 and the Rochester Razor Sharks (PBL) in 2008.
You can see Whitted’s Springfield Armor player page and statistic here: http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/index.jsp?player=tre_whitted
The Star News (Wilmington NC newspaper) wrote a story about Whitted’s professional basketball career. Whitted briefly touches on his senior season off the bench at Marshall after being a starter for three seasons. It also mentions that his uncle Kevin Whitted is an assistant coach for Springfield. Read the article here: http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20091225/ARTICLES/912259991?p=1&tc=pg

Did you know?
Did you know that former Marshall “Young” Thundering Herd quarterback Reggie Oliver played professional football? After completing his eligibility with Marshall in 1974 Oliver was signed by the World Football Leagues Jacksonville Sharks. Oliver got his first action in Jacksonville’s sixth game of the season against Orlando and almost lead the Sharks to a come from behind victory. After the near miss against Orlando Oliver held on to the starting quarterback job and took Jacksonville to a 4 – 10 record. Running the same veer offense he mastered at Marshall Oliver passed for 1,415 yards with seven touchdowns and twelve interceptions. Oliver would only spend one year in the WFL before moving on to the Canadian Football League.

Transfers, Ineligible, and Purdue
A couple of big news items in Chuck Landon’s article today, http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x300703687/Holliday-delays-hire-of-defensive-coordinator
Here is a break down:
“Two players have left Marshall's program. They are quarterback Jake Laudenslayer, who was redshirted last season after joining the Herd as a junior college transfer, and linebacker Corey Hart, a junior who appeared in only six games last season”
Laudenslayer’s departure leaves Marshall with Brian Anderson, Mark Cann, Press Taylor, and A.J Graham as scholarship quarterbacks. Anderson and Taylor only have one year of eligibility remaining so quarterback would be a nice addition to this upcoming recruiting class.
Tough to lose Corey Hart but Marshall has a strong group of young linebackers egger to step into the rotation next year.
“In other player news, defensive tackles Johnny Jones and Brandon Bullock were academically ineligible for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Both are expected to regain their eligibility next semester.”
Mystery solved, guess Marshall was not releasing this information before the bowl game. Lets hope Jones and Bullock are in good academic standing come spring practice.
“And the Big Ten opponent is. ... Purdue.
Marshall and the Boilermakers have agreed on a home-and-home series, according to sources. The Herd will play at West Lafayette, Ind., in 2012, then host Purdue in 2017.
And don't be afraid of Purdue not showing at Edwards Stadium.
The contract includes a $500,000 buyout clause.”
My prediction holds up as Purdue is the latest BCS opponent scheduled to visit Joan C. Edwards stadium, albeit in 2017. Hopefully $500,00 is still a large buyout by 2017.
The 2012 schedule only has one out of conference opening left. So far in 2012 Marshall will be at WVU and Purdue while Ohio visits Huntington. Look for Mike Hamrick to add another non-BCS conference school to round out our future opponents.
