How to Beat Memphis

Marshall heads to the Liberty Bowl this weekend to face conference foe Memphis. The Thundering Herd are coming off a 17 – 10 win over Bowling Green while Memphis handled Tennessee-Martin 41 – 14.

So how do you beat the Memphis Tigers? Since joining C-USA Marshall and Memphis have played four times, each team winning two games at home. Getting a win on the road in this series, or any C-USA road game for that matter, will be a formidable task.

Besides their blow out win over UT-Martin Memphis has struggled this season, losing to Middle Tennessee 31 – 14 and Mississippi 45 – 14. During both of those contest Memphis gave up a total of 338 rushing yards which brings me to Marshall’s first key to victory, run the football. Just like last week the Herd will need a strong performance from star running back Darius Marshall. Memphis’s defense has been porous against the run. If Marshall can run effectively and control the clock it would go a long way towards victory.

Memphis quarterback Tyler Bass had a break out performance against UT-Martin, throwing for 293 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 80 more yards plus another TD. Marshall’s second key to victory is shutting down Bass. The Herd has had trouble with mobile quarterbacks (see Joe Webb UAB Tyrod Taylor VT) but MU’s defense made great strides against BGSU. It will be vital for Albert Mcclellan to get in Bass’s face and disrupt his rhythm. Even though Bass had a great performance against UT-Martin it was only his first college start. A strong pass rush will surely rattle the young quarterback.

Marshall’s final key to victory centers around the wide receivers. Brain Anderson needs to find a reliable target with Troy Evans season ending injury and Courtney Edmonson’s continued absence. Marshall’s leading wide receivers Chuck Walker and Antavio Wilson are barely averaging forty yards receiving per game. Cody Slate is a great tight end but Anderson needs another set of reliable hands on the field. If Wilson can build on last weeks strong performance or Walker regains hisweek one form look for Marshall’s offense to catch fire.

How to Beat BGSU Update

Last week I published a post about how to beat Bowling Green (http://marshallthunderingblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/how-to-beat-bgsu.html. In the post I detailed three keys to the game for Herd victory. They were score early and often, rush effectively to control the clock, and cause turnovers. Lets review the game to see how well Marshall stacked up in each of those categories.

1. Score Early and Often:

Marshall did not score early or often. On the Herds first possession they marched to Bowling Green’s six yard line before a bad snap resulted in a missed field goal. Bowling Green struck first in the second half when Tyler Sheenan found Chris Wright for a fifty yard touchdown pass. Marshall did not answer until the third quarter when scrambling Brian Anderson found Antavio Wilson for a 11 yard touchdown reception.

2. Run the Ball

Marshall was extremely effective running the football. The Herd racked up 254 rushing yards, 188 of those belonging to Darius Marshall. Even though Marshall held a huge advantage in rushing Bowling Green won the time of possession battle by three minutes. You can attribute that to Marshall’s 80 yard touchdown run and a few long drives by the Falcon offense.

3. Cause Turnovers

Marshall only caused one turnover but it came at a crucial moment. After Marshall’s 80 yard touchdown run Bowling Green had first and ten on their own 19 yard line. Albert McClellan jarred the ball lose from Sheenan and Vinny Curry fell on the fumble to give Marshall possession. Unfortunately the Herd had to settle for a field goal but it did put Marshall ahead by a touchdown.

Looks like my keys to the game mostly held up. Besides score early and often Marshall did run the ball effectively and caused a turnover. Even though Marshall did not control the clock by gaining 254 yards rushing it was the Herds main source of offense. Turnovers were not abundant but the Herd was even in giveaways with Bowling Green and did score off of Sheenan’s fumble.

Lets hope Marshall keeps it up against Memphis this Saturday at the Liberty Bowl!

"A couple of the Marshall coaches came down and watched me. I had to put on a show. I think I bring a little bit more intensity to the team, just being out there." How to Beat BGSU

For the first time since Marshall left for Conference USA a MAC opponent is visiting Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Saturday’s game against Bowling Green kicks off at 7pm as the Herd attempts to improve on last weeks loss.

So how do you beat BGSU? As coach Snyder said in his weekly press conference Bowling Green runs an offense Marshall should be accustomed to.

“ I do, I do. I absolutely do. They are very Conference USA like, on the west side” said Snyder.

Since the Herd have not played a C-USA West team this season lets review Marshall’s games from last year. During three games versus west opponents Marshall beat Houston 37 – 23, lost to Rice 35 – 10, and lost to Tulsa 38 – 35.

Lets review the Houston game, which was Marshall only win over a C-USA west opponent. Both teams exchanged punts before Craig Ratanmorrn scored on a 28 yard field goal with 5 minutes left in the first. Following another exchange of punts Marshall went on a scoring drive which culminated in a Mark Cann touchdown pass just as the second quarter began. Ratanmorn connected on two more field goals before half time and Marshall entered the third with a 16 - 3 lead. Marshall’s biggest play of the game came as Houston was looking to score on first and goal from MU’s one yard line. Houston running back Bryce Beal fumbled to Maurice Kitchens who returned the ball to Marshall’s one yard line. Due to a Brandon Burns penalty Marshall started there drive on Houston’s 32 but quickly scored on another Cann pass. By then Marshall had a 23 – 3 lead and cruised to a 37 – 23 victory.

What can we learn from the Houston game about beating Bowling Green? First Marshall must score early and often. Taking the momentum at home is huge, Marshall scored 13 points before Houston got on the board and entered half time with a 16 – 3 lead. The Herd has to run the ball. Against a pass happy offense like Bowling Green time of possession is very important. During the Houston game Marshall had a plus 13 minute time of possession advantage. Marshall accomplished this by racking up nearly 250 yards on the ground. The Herds last key to victory is cause turnovers. It does not need to be dramatic as Kitchens run back or DeQuan Bembry’s end zone interception last week but turnovers are needed.

If Marshall can follow the foot prints of last seasons victory against Houston (arguably Snyder’s most impressive win as head coach) the Herd should be able to beat Bowling Green. Just make sure to keep the band carts way out of play this time!

My Two Cents

I have done a good job these past three months keeping this blog news based, not an arena to run my mouth. After our Herds drubbing at Virginia Tech there seems to be a portion of the fan base that is very upset. There have been a lot of negative opinions thrown around various message boards, some even suggesting coach Mark Snyder being fired mid-season. Although I am not happy with the loss I think we need all need to take a step back and look forward to next week instead of dwelling on the past.

Before I go into my assessment of the past week and the week to follow I need to introduce my self. I grew up in northern Virginia and only became a Herd fan when I started to attend Marshall in 2003. During my four years on campus I fully emerged my self in Marshall athletics, attending every football game and most basketball games. After graduation I followed Marshall from afar in Arizona but now reside in D.C. The day after Mike Hamrick got named athletic director I became a Big Green member.

Any way, I was at the Virginia Tech game this past Saturday. Before game time I did not expect to win but was anticipating a good showing. Unfortunately as the game progressed it became clear it was not Marshall’s day. With the long drive home in front of us my fiancé and I exited with a few minutes left in the third quarter. Although I was upset we got beat so badly I figure they were VT and we are Marshall, the Hokies just have a different class of athlete. Upon my arrival back in northern Virginia I turned my computer to herdnation.com and was surprised by the amount of angry fans. After reading a few post I started to understand my fellow fans anger, we simply did not come to play and got killed. What I could not understand is the irrational thinking that thinking that this season is lost. Let me present a few facts to put this loss in perspective.

Although former coach Bob Pruett lead Marshall to a victory over Kansas State he did have a few stinkers against BCS opponents including VT. During the 2002 football season Pruett took the Herd into Lane Stadium and lost 47 – 21. The year before Marshall visited Florida in Gainesville and got killed 49-14. No one is going to argue that the 2001 and 2002 versions of the Herd are worse than this years inception. Turning our attention back to VT we have not played a competitive game against them in a long time, in 2005 we lost 41 – 14. I think it is fair to say our expectations were a little high heading into Blacksburg. Seeing Tech struggle the week before gave me some passing thoughts of a Herd upset but reality set in quickly on game day. Virginia Tech has a different class of athlete. Watching the game live you could see how much faster they were. The closing speed of VT’s linebackers and corners was astonishing compared to last weeks opponent Southern Illinois. That’s not to say Marshall did not have there chances on Saturday. There were a few key plays that if Marshall would have hit we could be talking about a different outcome.

After Bembry’s huge end zone interception Marshall had a chance to take the momentum. Instead the Herd gained two yards on three plays and had to punt. On that possession QB Brian Anderson had Chuck Walker wide open twice but could not take advantage. On the Herds second down attempt Walker was streaking down midfield but Anderson’s pass was over his head. It appeared that Marshall ran the same play on third down but Walker could not haul in a Anderson pass near the fifty yard line. On Virginia Tech’s ensuing possession they scored on a 57 yard run and our fate was sealed. Two incomplete passes might not sound like a lot but when playing a opponent like VT you can not afford to miss your opportunities. Who knows what happens if we complete one of those passes. It would be full hearty to say we win but I think it is fair to say the outcome would have been a bit different.

Next week is a huge. As you might recall our last game against Bowling Green did not go well, the Herd got embarrassed 56 – 35 at BGSU in 2004. Bowling Green has played quality football under new coach Dave Clawson, beating Troy easily in week one and almost upsetting Missouri last Saturday. A win against Bowling Green proves Marshall is moving in the right direction. By the time we left the MAC after 2004 BGSU had a better football program. Something that seemed impossible when Marshall joined the league in 1997. If coach Snyder can get a win on Saturday it sets us up with momentum heading into conference play. A loss could kill moral and our season might tail spin.

Either way I don’t think last weeks loss makes or breaks our season. I am looking forward to visiting the Joan this Saturday and rooting the Herd onto victory.

Hokie All-American Who Died in 1970 Plane Crash to Be Honored

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- On the Marshall University campus, there are lasting reminders of the 1970 plane crash that took the lives of 75 people, most of them Marshall players, coaches and fans. There are plaques in the student center and outside the football stadium. In the center of campus, there is a memorial fountain where a service is held each year. A downtown restaurant has a room dedicated to the team, with pictures of the players and coaches.

On the Virginia Tech campus, there will be more signs of remembrance Saturday when the Thundering Herd (1-0) takes on No. 14 Virginia Tech (0-1) at Lane Stadium. The Hokies will wear helmets with a throwback logo that are replicas of the kind worn when Frank Loria was an all-American safety at Virginia Tech in the 1960s. In 1970, Loria was a member of Marshall's coaching staff and died in the crash.

Loria "was a great football player and a great person, a real leader," said Hokies Coach Frank Beamer, who played alongside Loria at Virginia Tech. "He didn't talk much but when he did, you listened to him. I thought he was on his way to be a great coach."

On the field, both teams will be looking to reassert themselves after stumbling out of the gate. In a 34-24 loss to Alabama last Saturday, Virginia Tech squandered an opportunity to stake its spot in the national title picture and sputtered on offense. The Thundering Herd, meanwhile, scraped out a 31-28 win over Southern Illinois, a nationally ranked division I-AA opponent.
Regardless of the outcome, Marshall will feel a warm welcome to Blacksburg as the Hokies honor Loria and those who died in the crash.

"I think it will mean a lot to our fans," Marshall Coach Mark Snyder said, adding, "I think this a great thing Virginia Tech is doing."

The gesture links two universities that have been touched by tragedies. The resonance of the crash at Marshall mirrors the effect the 2007 shooting has had on Virginia Tech. On Virginia Tech's campus, there is a memorial outside the Burruss Hall administration building, and there have been candlelight vigils each year to commemorate the April 16 anniversary. Commemorative ribbons are still frequently seen around Blacksburg.

"Remembrance of what transpired a couple of years ago is now part of our culture," Ishwar K. Puri, a professor and department head of engineering science and mechanics at Virginia Tech, said in August after the off-campus shooting death of two students again shook the community. "The culture is kept alive by alumni, faculty members and staff members. There's a significant portion of them who have not forgotten."

Although a similar culture of remembrance has not subsided at Marshall in almost 40 years since the crash, the school's football identity recently has been tied to its high-profile career placement. Near the football coaches' offices here, there are framed NFL jerseys bearing names such as Moss, Pennington and Leftwich hanging on the walls. But it took the 2006 movie "We Are Marshall," about the crash and its aftermath, to spotlight the incident for a younger generation.

On Nov. 14, 1970, after the Thundering Herd's 17-14 loss at East Carolina, the team-chartered airplane crashed just minutes from the Tri-State Airport near Huntington. At the scene of the accident, West Virginia Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. reportedly called it "a tragedy of the highest degree."

Loria was the first Virginia Tech player to be named first-team all-American in back-to-back seasons, in 1966 and 1967. He was later selected as a charter member of the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Loria joined the Marshall coaching staff in 1969 under former Virginia Tech player Rick Tolley. When Loria died in 1970, he was survived by his pregnant wife, Vickie, and two young daughters who barely knew him.

"It means the world to us they still remember our dad," his son, Frank Jr., who was born a month and a half after the crash, said of Virginia Tech's gesture. "Even though we're outsiders, for us to be a part of the team, it means everything to us. We didn't know him, but this is one of the things we get to know him by."

Virginia Tech is 7-2 against Marshall, winning each of the last five meetings. But before kickoff, that football history will matter little. On Saturday, as the Hokies honor Loria, the kindred spirits of two universities that have been afflicted by catastrophe will be united.

As the teams take the field, Frank Loria Jr. said he would be thinking about the Virginia Tech families that lost loved ones in the 2007 shooting and hoping they were able to use the tragedy to strengthen their lives. He said he would also be thinking members of "my Marshall family" who have lived in dedication to those who died in the crash.

"I will probably have a few tears," he said, "but also a big smile."

Marshall Excited About Opportunity to Play Hokies

In the weeks leading up to Virginia Tech’s game against Alabama last Saturday, there was a buzz about the Hokies' opportunity to knock off a ranked opponent and make a statement about the program. Now it's Marshall’s turn.

Marshall Coach Mark Snyder said playing the Hokies was a “monumental task. They’re a good football team. Very fast, very physical. We’re going to have to play a perfect game.”
While Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer has said his team needed to be "right in all areas," he said the Thundering Herd will not go lightly. "I think they're pretty capable," Beamer said Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Marshall won two division I-AA national titles, in 1992 and 1996, and five Mid-American Conference titles after joining division I-A in 1997. But the Thundering Herd, now a member of Conference USA, has not had a winning season since 2003. Its most recent win over a ranked team came during that season, when it defeated No. 6 Kansas State, 27-20, in Huntington, W.Va.
Last Saturday, Marshall scraped out a 31-28 win over Southern Illinois, a nationally ranked division I-AA team. But Virginia Tech represents the biggest opportunity – and challenge – on the Thundering Herd’s schedule. A win would add a shot of vitality to the program and perhaps help it start to pull itself up.

“We’re very excited,” strong safety Ashton Hall said. “It’s a real big game for us. It’s always a big game when you’re playing a bigger school with a bigger prestige.”
As the game has approached, it has become a bigger topic of discussion. At the coach’s quarterback club meeting – $12 for lunch and an opportunity to ask him a question – fans wanted to know about the Hokies, their speed and their impact players. At practice on Thursday, speakers will be turned on to simulate the crowd noise sure to greet the team in Blacksburg.

Downtown at the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe, servers said they were expecting a packed crowd to watch the game on television. In front of the student center, members of the Marshall Maniacs fan group were selling green T-shirts and asking if students were heading to Blacksburg.

“I think those of us excited about athletics are pumped about this game,” said Samantha Turley, 18, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla., and the co-vice president and communications coordinator of the Marshall Maniacs. “I’m excited to see a lot of Marshall fans there – at least I’m hoping to.”
As of Wednesday, the Marshall Maniacs had sold 49 student tickets for the away game. Although some students said they heard talk about the Virginia Tech game, others said they were not too excited for a match up against a ranked opponent.

“I think we’re going to get stomped, honestly,” said Trenton Davis, 21, a junior from Huntington, W.Va. “We looked pretty sad last weekend.”

After a year on the practice squad Legursky made the Steelers 53 man roster. He will be the first guard or center off the bench in Pittsburgh. Steelers guard Max Starks had this to say about Legursky “We have to at least rely on one good thing -- having Doug Legursky as a backup, starting two games with us, kind of gives us a comfort level," said Starks, who started the final 14 games (including postseason) at left tackle because of an injury to Marvel Smith and begins his sixth NFL season as the team's highest-paid offensive lineman. "He knows what he's doing. If he had to come in, he'd still be an asset for us. You always like to have all experienced guys together, but that's the nature of this business. John Wade, C, Oakland Raiders

After not being able to practice for a few weeks during training camp Wade was cut by the Raiders. He is now a free agent.

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, New York Giants

Ran for 31 yards on 9 carries during the Giants 38 – 27 loss to New England.

Salukis look to steal marshall's thunder
SIU opens against FBS school for the first time since 1989

SIU head football coach Dale Lennon said he does not care where the Salukis open their season or who they are playing — they’re ready.

“I don’t mind being on the road — I don’t mind playing a (Football Bowl Subdivision) team,”

Lennon said. “Our whole intention is to put our best game forward. We’re going down there with the intention that we have the ability to win.”

The Salukis will travel to Huntington, W.Va., Saturday to face the Marshall Thundering Herd of the FBS Conference USA. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Lennon said Marshall would be a great test to open the season.
“(There’s) a lot of football history there, just the idea of playing Marshall in the first game is exciting,” Lennon said. “But we need to stay focused on the game and not let the hype catch up to us.”

If the Salukis can make history repeat itself, they could leave Marshall victorious.
SIU has won two of their last three games against FBS teams, with wins against Indiana and Northern Illinois. Marshall bounced back from its 48-35 loss at home in 2007 to Football Championship Subdivision’s New Hampshire by pounding Saluki conference foe Illinois State 35-10 last season. Marshall head coach Mark Snyder said he knows not to overlook the lower division teams.

“The disparity between us and them has almost completely disappeared now,” Snyder said. “You cannot look at these teams anymore and expect a victory.”

The Salukis are relying on their returning starters to continue last season’s success.Junior quarterback Chris Dieker comes back to build on his successful sophomore season.
Dieker passed for 2,082 yards and 16 touchdowns as he led the Salukis to a 9-3 record. Lennon said Dieker would have more control of the offense this season because of his experience in the offensive scheme.

While Dieker has found a home under center, the Salukis go into the season with a wide-open backfield. Junior running back Richard White returned to practice this week after a turf toe injury sidelined him last week. White and redshirt senior Deji Karim are expected to get the most touches out of the backfield.

Despite the experienced offense, it is SIU’s defense that caught Snyder’s attention.

Snyder said Marshall must find way to stop the speed of the Saluki defense, which includes cornerback Korey Lindsey and linebackers Brandin Jordan and Chauncey Mixon. Jordan said the team is looking at Marshall as just another challenge.

“Any team that we’re scheduled up against this season, we definitely have a chance at beating them,” Jordan said. “We’re just going to use this as a stepping stone, and hopefully knock these guys off and keep it going smooth from there.”

Update From Yesterday

Yesterday I posted about Marshall’s connections to Thursdays college football kickoff (http://marshallthunderingblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/kickoff-night-marshall-connections.html). Figured it might be a good idea to follow up on the action.

Ball State coach Stan Parish had a rough outing in Muncie as the Cardinals fell to North Texas 20 – 10. With former star quarterback Nate Davis in the NFL Ball State had a difficult time moving the ball. Hopefully for all of us Parish fans the head coach can turn things around. Ball State gets former Marshall opponent New Hampshire next week.

Marshall’s September 19th opponent Bowling Green bowled (yeah I know that was bad) over Troy state at home last night 34 – 17. Falcons coach Dave Clawson got his first win at BGSU while quarterback Tyler Sheehan threw for 339 yards on 32 completions and two touchdowns. Bowling Green heads to Missouri next week before taking on the Herd.
