This according to Commercial Appeal sports reporter Dan Wolken, who is in Destin, Fla., covering the Conference USA spring meetings. Wolken reported the outcome of the vote on his Twitter account, citing sources.

I’m surprised by the vote, although UTEP’s reported bid ($1 million) was higher than Memphis’ $750,000.

Cleveland Melvin Update

From Adam Zagoria’s "Zag Blog" on SNY.TV: http://www.zagsblog.com/2010/05/14/melvin-to-decide-soon/

Fresh off his visit to Rutgers this week, 6-8 forward Cleveland Melvin could be making a decision in the coming days.

“He will sit down with his mom and family members and ponder a decision,” said Anthony Lewis, Melvin’s coach with the Cecil Kirk AAU program. “He’s gotta get it right.”

Lewis said Melvin is still considering Rutgers, DePaul, Seton Hall and Marshall although Seton Hall is no longer actively recruiting him.

Lewis said he wasn’t aware of that.

Melvin, who initially committed to UConn, enjoyed the Rutgers visit, which he took along with fellow Baltimore native Antoine Myers,a 6-3 point guard.

“I think the visit went well,” Lewis said.

Asked when Melvin might decide, Lewis said, “I suspect over the weekend or the first of the week.”

As for Myers, Lewis said he plans to visit UNC-Wilmington soon and is considering several schools.

“He will take another visit or two and then pull his list together as well,” Lewis said.

Huntington Development / Marshall Baseball Field

Details of the Huntington/Marshall development project that made news two weeks ago were revealed yesterday. Head to the Herald Dispatch, (http://www.herald-dispatch.com/homepage/x540217474/No-Headline) for all the prudent information.

Marshall stands to gain a baseball stadium and research and development facility from the project. A new track, soccer field, and indoor practice facility could also be included. Huntington would add a 110-room hotel and conference center, 20,000 square feet of retail space, a law enforcement training center, transportation training facility, and extended-stay housing. Please review the map here (http://media.herald-dispatch.com/advertising/pdf/120510-NEWS-port_map.pdf), for a over head view of where the development would take place.

Red Dawson Visits Leon High School (FL)

From WCTV.TV: http://www.wctv.tv/news/headlines/92814559.html

Students at Leon High got a visit from a former Seminole who was also part of a very famous football team.

The students wrote letters to Red Dawson, one of the coaches at Marshall University who was *not* on the plane that crashed killing players, coaches, boosters and parents in 1970.
Red talked to the students about the tragedy, how the movie lived up to real life, and how important it is to do what's right.

"Maybe one of them might get motivated to work hard, and be somebody and I just wanted to see the students," says Dawson.

"What I can take away from it is to just stay working hard, keep my mind set straight on school and my books and play football with all my heart and make sure I finish out the school year," says Christiaan Davis, one of the students who wrote to Dawson.

Dawson still lives in West Virginia but still visits Valdosta where he grew up

Dante Holmes to Marshall Basketball

Plenty of college programs recruited Dante Holmes throughout his four years at St. Frances.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound wing heard pitches from coaches in the ACC, Big East, Big 12 and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, among others. But a late entrant from Conference USA ultimately earned Holmes’ commitment.

“We did an official visit over the weekend, and it was one of those things where some schools started calling like Boston College, Iowa State,” said Carlos Green, a St. Frances assistant and Holmes’ uncle. “But Marshall just ... wanted him really bad. They were real consistent in his recruitment. The head coach, as soon as he got the job, he called the next day. He wanted to come and see Dante. The assistant coach was consistent in calling and it was just a real good fit.”.................

A few notes on Orlando Allen

Started to play organized basketball his Junior year of high school.

Attended Paris (TX) Junior College for two seasons.

During his Freshman season at Junior College Allen averaged 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in limited action. Due to leg and knee injuries Allen did not play his Sophomore year.

Over two seasons and 28 games at Oklahoma including one start Allen has averaged 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in limited action.

Allen will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Orlando Allen transferring to Marshall

From Chuck Landon’s column in today’s Herald Dispatch: http://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/marshall/x540212921/Jones-reply-to-buyout-issue-leaves-much-to-be-desired

It appears a player is going to follow new Marshall assistant coach Mark Cline from the University of Oklahoma.

He is Orlando Allen -- all 6-10, 288 pounds of him.

Like former Herd player Pierre Marie Altidor-Cespedes, Allen already has his college degree but has a year of eligibility remaining. So, if the NCAA grants his waiver request, Allen will be eligible immediately.

The Cincinnati, Ohio, native played in only nine games for the Sooners last season, averaging 1.2 points and 1.9 rebounds.

But considering Allen's size and the Herd's lack thereof, he would be a big addition to Marshall's roster.
