Hassan Whiteside to compete in NBA Summer League

As expected Hassan Whiteside is joining the Sacramento Kings summer league basketball team. Sacramento competes in the Las Vegas summer league which runs from July 8th to July 19th on the campus of UNLV.

Whiteside will be competing for playing time with a number of other Sacramento big men including DeMarcus Cousins, Conner Atchley, Wayne Chism, and Steven Hill.

Marshall in the CFL

Marshall University has two players in the CFL (Canadian Football League) as week one is set to commence this weekend.

Defensive lineman Adrian Davis, who transferred out of Marshall after three seasons and returned to his native Canada, will be starting for the Toronto Argonauts this week.

Former Marshall receiver Darius Passmore can be found on the BC Lions injured reserve list. While healthy Passmore showed flashes of his ability during training camp but a hamstring injury slowed him down.

Marshall baseball lands short stop

Tampa Bay area short stop Tito Martinez has accepted a scholarship to Marshall University. During his high school career Martinez hit .359.

Martinez originally had committed to Polk State College but was granted his release to play at Marshall.

Mark Dorris in the Deveroes Summer League

Former Marshall basketball standout Mark Dorris is participating in the Deveroes summer basketball league. Deveroes is a Cincinnati Pro/Am basketball league consisting of current college players and those just past graduation. During the basketball season Dorris plays professionally in Germany.

Dorris’s summer league squad is team Chick-fil-A (all teams have corporate sponsors). In team Chick-fil-A’s first game Dorris scored 16 points but they still lost to Clovernook Heath Care 77 – 68.

Hassan Whiteside Going to Crowded Front Court in Sacramento

Former Marshall center Hassan Whiteside is looking at a crowded front court with the Sacramento Kings.

Besides Whiteside the Kings selected Kentucky center Demarcus Cousins with the 5th overall pick. As the 5th pick expect the Kings to give Cousins every opportunity to start right away. Sacramento also acquired veteran big man Samuel Dalembert from Philadelphia before the draft. Much like Whiteside, Dalembert is known as a defensive presence. During his seven year NBA career Dalembert has averaged over 8 points and 8 rebounds per game while almost averaging 2 blocks.

The Kings also have a number of big men from last years roster. Second year pro Jason Thompson started for Sacramento at center last season, he average 12 points, 8.5 rebounds, and one blocked shot per game. At the power forward position Sacramento started former Purdue Boilermaker Carl Landry. At 6 feet 9 inches Landry averaged almost 17 points and 6 rebounds per game in 09 – 10. Besides those two the Kings carried four more big men on last years roster including Omir Casspi (averaged over 25 minutes per game, former 1st round pick), Sean May (8.9 minutes per game), Spencer Hawes (over 26 minutes per game), and John Brockman (12.6 minutes per game).

With the addition of Cousins, Dalembert, and Whiteside every Sacramento forward from last season will not be returning but, Whiteside still faces an uphill battle for a roster spot, much less playing time. Second round draft picks do not receive guaranteed contracts and can be signed to 1 – 5 years deals for as little as $400,000 per season.

Sentence in Donte Newsome murder trial handed down

HUNTINGTON-- Judge L.D. Egnor sentenced Jerel Garner to maximum sentence -- 21 to 25 years -- in the death of a former Marshall football player on Tuesday.

Garner was sentenced to 15 years on the voluntary manslaughter conviction, 5 years on wanton endangerment and 1 to 5 years on the carrying a concealed weapon without a license conviction. All of the sentences will run consecutive.

Garner of Charleston was convicted on all three charges in March in the shooting death of former Marshall University football standout Donte Newsome.

Experts testified in the trial that at least 10 gunshots were fired about 3 a.m. July 5, 2008, in the 600 block of 4th Avenue, outside of a nightclub formerly known as Fluid. Garner also received gunshot wounds from Ivan Clark, who witnesses testified fired in defense of his friends and former teammates.

The weeklong March trial focused on the question of self-defense.

SMU sets Athletics Fundraising Record

DALLAS (SMU) - For the second straight year, SMU Athletics has set a fundraising record. For fiscal year 2010, which ended May 31, SMU Athletics added $5.3 million in annual gifts, breaking the $5 million mark for the first time.

Over the past two fiscal years, SMU Athletics has seen a 59% spike in annual giving. Including capital and other gifts, over $9 million was given to SMU Athletics in 2010, with Mustang Club donations up 33%.

"I would like to thank the generous fans and alumni who continue to support our talented student-athletes in these challenging economic times," said Director of Athletics Steve Orsini. "I also want to thank and congratulate our development staff, led by (Sr. Assoc. A.D.) Tim Leonard, and our Mustang Club volunteers. This record-breaking achievement in annual giving is a testament to the growing loyalty Mustang fans have shown for SMU and for our athletics programs."

This year's success in annual operating support exceeded the previous record year, 2009, when the Mustangs added over $4.5 million to the coffers in annual support.

Doc Holliday denies being source

MORGANTOWN — New Marshall football coach Doc Holliday vehemently denied speculation that he was the unnamed source behind a story in last Sunday’s Huntington Dispatch that reported West Virginia University had self-reported to the NCAA violations of using personnel in coaching roles over the limit of nine.

“I would never do anything like that,” an irate Holliday said. “West Virginia is my alma mater, remember. I spent a long time there. I have roots there.”

A column early this week in the Times West Virginian included these paragraphs, which Holliday took to be accusing him of being the leak.

“When one realized the head coach at Marshall is Doc Holliday, a long-time WVU assistant who left the program back when Don Nehlen was retiring and then was snubbed when Bill Stewart was named over him as Rodriguez's replacement after he had spent time at North Carolina State and Florida, there was much suspicion that he may have been behind the planting of the story.“

Considering Holliday also has hired away some of WVU's graduate assistants to work in his program, one can assume that the first shot in what could be a hot rivalry has been fired.

”While it is true speculation existed that Holliday was the unnamed source of the story, he made it a point to stress this was not the case."

I have enough to worry about with my football team,” the former West Virginia coach said.

West Virginia officials have steadfastly refused to confirm or deny the report that Pat Kirkland and Dale Wolfley, two men who hold administrative positions, had been used in coaching duties.

NCAA rules prohibit them from commenting publically at this time.

Marshall losses out on Cody Clay

Last week Marshall offered a scholarship to George Washington (WV) tight end / defensive end Cody Clay. Unfortunately, WVU did the same after there elite 7 on 7 camp this weekend and Clay gave them a verbal commitment.

During his Junior season at GW Clay caught 20 passes for 278 yards while also racking up 58 tackles and 4 sacks on defense.

Former Marshall QB coaching Randy Moss in New England

A trio of MU players will take the field in the Great Lakes League in Ben Jurevicius, Kenny Socorro and Chris Norton. Jurevicius will roam the outfield for the Delaware Cows, while Socorro and Norton will team up on the Stark County Terriers in Ohio.

Sluggers Thor Meeks and Rhett Stafford will both play for the Danbury Westerners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Clarification on Student Athletics Fee

Upon reading that Marshall students pay $890 a year, or $445 per semester, for the cause of Thundering Herd athletics, I wanted a recount.

I recalled from another era that some of the broad-based student activity fee goes to other purposes, such as recreation, student health services, student government, etc. Essentially, I want to see if the Center for College Affordability and Productivity is feeding us a good figure.

Another side to all this: As far as schools building their athletic fortress with student fees, Marshall is not exactly a champion among its mid-major peers. Back in 2002-03, Marshall was dead last in the all-public Mid-American Conference, only close to Eastern Michigan.

The MAC days were wrapping up when MU passed a $100 a semester "special equity fee," beginning with the 2004-05. Ostensibly, that helped the athletic department stay out of hot water in regards to Title IX. That put the student athletic fee at $204 a semester, which makes me wonder if the $445 figure that has both Charleston papers in a snit is even accurate.

Today, Marshall resides in a league with five other public schools and six private schools. David Steele, the numbers man in the athletic department, tells me Marshall's revenue from student fees was about $4 million in the 2008-09 school year, or roughly one-sixth (NOT one-half) of the budget.

That figure falls well below the average $6.4 million among the six public C-USA schools, but it is more than double the $1.77 million MU collected in 2002-03.

Back to the MU tuition breakdown, well, it is not available. Back in the Stone Age, aka the 1980s, the undergraduate catalog dutifully printed how the fees were divided, itemizing every recipient to the last dime.

In the 2009-10 catalog, available on a PDF file, there is no such breakdown. You'll pay your base tuition of $2,299 a semester, and you'll like it.

That will not do. If I'm a parent about to write a tuition check, I want a breakdown of where my money goes, and I want it now. The rest of the public is entitled to it, as well, in the clearest terms.

Dave Peyton is a Bitter Betty

If you can stomach it head over to the Charleston Daily Mail and read Dave Peyton’s latest column on the “outrageous” fees Marshall students pay towards athletics.

Almost $900 per student is a lot of money going towards athletics but this guy thinks we should still be playing at Fairfield Stadium. We would not be out of 1-AA, much less the MAC, if we still played at Fairfield.

Peyton needs to realize that college athletics are about more than “old alumni and those who never attended the university but think sports is the only thing Marshall has to offer have something to talk about when they can't find anything serious to discuss.” People talking about Marshall athletics has nothing to do with the students fees. It has to do with Peyton’s media talking about Marshall. The media coverage coming back to Marshall due to athletics, which MU sports information director Randy Burnside pegged at forty million dollars last week, is the main reason why all that money gets funneled to sports. Assuming Marshall has 14,000 students paying $900 each ($12.6 million) I think a net gain of $27.4 million (40 million – 12.6 million) is a equation any business or university would be proud of. If Peyton’s media covered great scholars and class room achievements like those on the football field I am sure those student fees would be re-directed.

Tommy Johnson and the Travers City Beach Bums

After being released by the Seattle Mariners former Marshall University catcher Tommy Johnson has signed with the Travers City Beach Bums (Unaffiliated Frontier League).

After 11 games Johnson is hitting .200 with four RBI’s and four runs.

Marshall Football loses out on Michael Nebrich

Last week rivals.com reported that Marshall offered a scholarship to Lake Brake High School (VA) quarterback Michael Nebrich (http://marshall.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?sid=1082&script=content.asp&cid=1090303&fid=&tid=&mid=) subscription.

Yesterday the Washington Post reported that Nebrich accepted a scholarship from Connecticut (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/recruitinginsider/2010/06/lake_braddock_qb_michael_nebri.html?wprss=recruitinginsider).

During his junior season Nebrich threw for over 3,000 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also rushing for more than 1,000 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Roy Slezak and 1970 Thundering Herd Football Team

Great story from the Rio Rancher Observer about Roy Slezak who was scheduled to travel with Marshall’s football team on November 14th 1970 from East Carolina. Slezak was friends with Marshall running back Art Harris, it was Harris’s father who invited Slezak to the East Carolina game. Marshall football offers Eric & Blake Frohnapfel

Eric Frohnapfel had three Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers.
His twin brother, Blake, didn't have any.

But Marshall University handed Eric his fourth FBS offer and gave Blake his first this past weekend.

The Colonial Forge High School twins aren't in a hurry to make a decision.

But Eagles head coach Bill Brown said the possibility of attending the same school is intriguing to the family.

"I think that gives them an interesting thought," Brown said. "I don't think it necessarily seals the deal for Marshall, but at the same time it does cause them to ponder it."

Eric, a tight end, also has offers from West Virginia, Virginia and Miami (Ohio).

Blake, a quarterback, has an offer from Bryant University, which plays in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Blake is still receiving interest from several other schools, Brown said. He's made one-day visits to North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Still, Brown said he and his brother will give the Thundering Herd serious consideration.

"I'm sure that's an ideal situation for [their parents] where they can go to a place and the boys can be together," Brown said. "That would be huge."

Arik Sikula to pitch for the Rochester Honkers

Marshall pitcher Arik Sikula will play for the Rocherter Honkers during the colligate wooden bat league season. Sikula registered twenty saves for the Honkers last year and as a starter for Marshall this past season he went 6 – 5 with a 3.88 ERA.
