Marshall Football: Following up on Willy Korn
Over the weekend Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon wrote an article about hyped transfers who never played a down for Marshall’s football team. Landon’s column centered around two quarterbacks, the recently departed (just from Marshall, not from this world) Cornelius Jones, and Willy Korn.
Korn, a highly rated recruit out of high school, transferred to Marshall from Clemson for the 2010 season. After a few practices last August Korn left the Herd after being moved from quarterback to safety. In a mad dash to find another college Korn ended up at North Greenville, a division II school in his home state of South Carolina.
At North Greenville Korn lead the Crusaders with 1,533 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions. Under Korn’s leadership North Greenville won the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association's Victory Bowl, 42 – 16 over Campbellsville (KY). The victory capped a huge season for the Crusaders, they finished with a 9–3 record.

Marshall Football: Derek Devine gets shot in UFL
Remembering former Marshall quarterback Derek Devine could be difficult. The strong armed signal caller transferred from Mt. San Antonio College (CA) to Marshall in 2005 and completed zero passes during his two year Thundering Herd career.
Despite his paltry numbers at MU Devine spent time in two NFL training camps. In 2007 Devine was the last quarterback cut from the Seattle Seahawks training camp, he suffered the same fate in 2008 with the Washington Redskins.
Devine recently resurfaced in the United Football League. After attending a private workout with the Virginia Destroyers they selected him with a 9th round pick in May’s UFL draft. The Destroyers are scheduled to open training camp in late July where Devine will fight for a starting spot. Competition at quarterback should be stiff, former second round NFL draft pick and WVU quarterback Pat White is also on the Destroyers roster.
For more on Devine’s journey from Marshall to the UFL read this article: http://www.ufl-football.com/news/devine-journey-quarterbacks-path-destroyers

Marshall and WVU discussing baseball series in Charleston
From the Charleston Daily Mail:
WVU DEPUTY Athletic Director Mike Parsons said that when he and Marshall officials meet soon in Charleston about this season's Capital Classic basketball game at the Civic Center (Jan. 18), discussion also will continue on a WVU-Herd baseball date at Appalachian Power Park next spring.
Parsons said he will meet with Marshall AD Mike Hamrick and the Herd's associate AD and chief of staff, Jeff O'Malley, who oversees the MU baseball program.
"We're serious about it, but there are a lot of hoops to get through," Parsons said. "You don't want to do a lot of promotions and marketing and then have it all washed away (with a rainout). It's tough for both of us to play on the weekend because of conference games. We'll see what we can figure out."

Marshall Baseball: Big day for Herd in MLB Draft
Major League Baseball conducted the third day (rounds 31 to 50) of it’s armature draft this afternoon and five Marshall University players have been selected.
First to come off the board in the 36th round was sophomore outfielder Isaac Ballou by Pittsburgh. Playing mostly center field in 2011, Ballou stole a team high 18 bases while hitting .283. As a rising junior Ballou has the option of returning to Marshall instead of going pro.
Also taken in the 36th round was senior starting pitcher Arik Sikula to Toronto. During 2011 Sikula, a Hurricane High School (WV) graduate, compiled a 2-6 record with a 5.42 ERA. Although his ERA was a bit inflated Sikula struck out an impressive 72 batters to only 27 base on balls.
Princeton West Virginia native Joe Church was selected in the 40th round by Anaheim. Recovering from offseason surgery the hard throwing Church had an ERA of 8.31 in 2011, all relief appearances. Much like Ballou, Church can return to Marshall for his junior year.
Team batting average leader Kenny Socorro was selected in the 44th round by Chicago (NL). In addition to leading Marshall in batting average the senior infielder knocked in 27 RBI’s and scored 32 runs.
Blue Jays skipper John Farrel selected his son Shane in the 46th round. A swingman out of the bullpen, Farrel pitched 45.1 innings in 2011 (9 starts) with a 4.76 ERA. Farrel will be entering his senior season at Marshall if he decides to bypass the pros.
Marshall also had three players selected in day two of the draft, Jr/LHP Mike Mason (23rd round, Texas), Jr/OF Rhett Stafford (22nd round, Oakland), and jr/LHP Greg Williams (12th round, Texas). Mason, Stafford, and Williams all have the option of returning to Marshall for their senior seasons.

Big Drama in WVU Football Program
Being the Marshall Thundering Blog I am not diving into the impending mess at WVU. WVU refutes Huntington Herald Dispatch column on Holgorson
From the Charleston Daily Mail,
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- After looking into its options, West Virginia University will take no action to refute allegations raised against the football program, athletic department and administration in separate columns published by two state newspapers over the weekend.
WVU sources said Tuesday and again Wednesday the university was reviewing the accusations in a Huntington Herald-Dispatch column from Sunday and an Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register column from the day before.
WVU was assessing the validity of the claims it believes are false. University officials were also determining whether a response to the publications would be necessary.
A WVU source said Wednesday the university will not take any action, but "knows the Herald-Dispatch story had blatant inaccuracies."
