Marshall Football: Grooms Arrested, Suspended Indefinitely

First reported by Derek Redd of the Charleston Daily Mail, Marshall running back Kevin Grooms was arrested just before 7 a.m. Saturday morning on charges of domestic battery and obstruction.

In a statement released by the athletic department, Marshall announced that Grooms has been suspended indefinitely. In April he was arrested on two misdemeanors, underage consumption and obstruction.

As of 5:50 p.m. Grooms was still being held at the Western Regional Jail. His bail has been set at $10,000 for each charge.

Marshall's second leading rusher, Grooms has run for 503 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Marshall Football: Herd Wins East with 59-28 Victory Over ECU

It was a banner Friday for the Thundering Herd as Marshall defeated East Carolina 59-28, earning a spot in next weeks Conference USA championship game during the process.

Marshall dominated all three phases of the game at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Running back Essray Taliaferro ran for 161 yards on 26 carries. With Friday's performance Taliaferro became the first Herd running back to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season since 2009. On the goal line Marshall turned to H-back Devon Johnson who scored two rushing touchdowns. He also added a 52 yard reception for a score in the third quarter.

On defense freshman defensive end Gary Thompson recorded two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. ECU quarterback Shane Carden was held without a passing touchdown for the first time in over a year. Marshall also contained the leading receiver in C-USA, only allowing Pirates wideout Justin Hardy 88 receiving yards.

After battling inconsistency all season Marshall's special teams showed up in a big way against ECU. Kicker Justin Haig converted a season long 42 yard field goal to give the Herd an early 3-0 lead. DeAndre Reaves put Marshall in good field position all day, returning three kicks for an average of 30.3 yards.

Marshall will host next Saturday's C-USA championship game if Tulane beats Rice later today. Under that scenario UTSA would be the opponent if they defeat Louisiana Tech this afternoon. A UTSA loss and Tulane win would send the Green Wave to Huntington. If Rice wins, the championship host would be determined by the higher BCS ranking between the Owls and Marshall.

Marshall Football: Fast Facts, East Carolina

Twelve facts you need to know about East Carolina before tomorrows game against Marshall.

1) ECU's Shane Carden is the leading passer in Conference USA. He has thrown for 3,575 yards, 32 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. In my opinion, Carden's most impressive statistic is his completion percentage, which stands at 72.8%. Like Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato, Carden can also pull the ball down and run, especially in the red zone where he has rushed for nine touchdowns.

2) The Pirates might average the third fewest rushing yards per game in C-USA but, they still have a dangerous running back in Vintavious Cooper. The senior has rushed for 902 yards and nine touchdowns. Over ECU's last two games, Cooper ran for 274 yards while averaging over seven yards per carry.

3) Justin Hardy is C-USA's leading receiver. The six-foot junior has caught 95 passes for 1,130 yards and eight touchdowns. In a overtime loss to Tulane, Hardy caught 17 passes for 230 yards. No other ECU player has recorded over 500 receiving yards.

4) The Pirates offensive line is surrendering a sack once every 17 pass attempts.

5) ECU has given up a C-USA low 13 turnovers.

5) How ECU's offense ranks among its C-USA brethren:

Total offense - 2nd (416.6 ypg.)
Passing offense - 1st (335.2 ypg.)
Rushing offense - 12th (126.45 ypg.)

6) East Carolina has a tenacious defense, they rank 10th nationally with 33 sacks. Reserve linebacker Montese Overton leads the Pirates with six sacks. Outside linebacker Derrell Johnson and defensive end Terrell Stanley are tied for second on the team with 5.5 sacks each.

7) Speaking of Johnson, he leads the team with 69 tackles and his 11.5 tackles for loss are also a team high.

8) Watch out for free safety Damon Magazu. The secondaries leading tackler, he has also snagged 3 interceptions and recorded one of the teams five fumble recoveries.

9) While I have already described ECU's defense as tenacious but, I would not call it opportunistic. They rank in the middle of C-USA with 19 turnovers gained.

10) Conference defensive rankings for ECU:

Total defense - 2nd (347.3 ypg.)
Passing defense - 13th (243.4 ypg.)
Rushing defense - 1st (103.91)

11) ECU kicker Warren Harvey has only converted 12 of 21 field goal attempts this year. Any thing longer than 30 yards has been a adventure. Punter Trent Tignor is averaging 42.7 yards per attempt.

12) ECU has not returned a kick or punt for a touchdown this season. They have not yielded a blocked kick or punt either. One other thing, the Pirates have yet to record a blocked punt of kick.

Marshall Basketball: No Pittman no Problem, Herd Beats WKU 74-64

Despite playing without leading scorer Elijah Pittman for 35 minutes, Marshall was able to overcome an early 16 point deficit and defeat Western Kentucky 74-64 in the Cam Henderson Center Tuesday evening.

The Thundering Herd was lead by sophomore shooting guard Chris Thomas. He scored a game high 27 points while converting 12 of his 13 attempts from the free throw line.

Trailing 13-7 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half, Pittman missed a shot and while running back on defense he forcibly elbow the chest of Caden Dickerson, knocking the Hilltoppers guard to the ground. After a video review by the referees, Pittman was assessed a Flagrant 2 Foul and ejected from the game.

Following Pittman's ejection the Herd stumbled, falling behind 24-8 before regaining their composer and bringing the halftime deficit to 36-30. Marshall completed the comeback by outscoring WKU 44-28 in the second half.

Marshall Basketball: Opponent Profile, Western Kentucky

After snapping a two game losing streak in a win over UNC Wilmington last week, Marshall (3-2, 0-0) returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Tuesday (7 p.m. tip-off) for a match-up against Western Kentucky (3-1, 0-0).

The Hilltoppers have qualified for two straight NCAA Tournaments and were the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference. They return four starters from last year’s squad including preseason All-Sun Belt first team selection T.J. Price. Western Kentucky’s leading scorer, Price averages 18 points per game.

After missing the season’s first three games with an sprained foot, WKU’s Brandon Harris saw his first action of the year against Samford last week. Projected to be the team’s starting point guard, Harris played 12 minutes against the Bulldogs, scoring three points while committing just as many assist (two) as turnovers.

George Fant (13 ppg) is the only other Hilltopper averaging double-digit points. The 6-foot-6 forward also leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game.

Tuesday’s contest is the third of four in the Roundball Showcase, an NCAA exempt event that only counts as two games on Marshall’s schedule. The Herd has already played Stephen F. Austin and UNCW, the final game will take place Saturday when East Tennessee State visits the Henderson Center.

Marshall Football: Herd Wins Big at FIU, 48-10

Despite a first quarter Florida International (1-10, 1-6) lead, Marshall (8-3, 6-1) overcame its slow start to defeat the Golden Panthers 48-10 at Alfonso Field.

The Thundering Herd accumulated over 550 yards of total offense and the defense limited FIU to only 3.6 yards per play while recording seven sacks.

On Friday the Herd host East Carolina in a game that will determine Conference USA's East division champion. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.

A couple of highlights from Saturday's game:
  • Gator Hoskins recorded his first 100 yard receiving game, catching six passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Speaking of touchdowns, Hoskins 25 career scores now ranks first all time among Marshall tight ends. The previous record of 23 was held by Cody Slate.
  • With six receptions against FIU, Tommy Shuler became the first Marshall player to ever record consecutive 80 catch seasons.
  • Marshall last won back-to-back road games in 2004. The nine year drought was snapped over the last two weeks with road wins at Tulsa and FIU.
  • Marshall's last score was a 40 yard touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Blake Frohnapfel to reserve wide receiver Justin Hunt. A freshman, the touchdown was the first of Hunts career.

Marshall Football: Fast Facts, Florida International

Thirteen facts you need to know about Florida International before tonight's game against Marshall.

1) No way to get around it, FIU is awful on offense. They average 10.1 points per game, second to last in the nation. They are also among the nations bottom ten teams in total offense, rushing offense, and passing offense.

4) Freshman tight end Jonnu Smith leads his team in receptions (31) and receiving yards (298). Wide receiver T.J. Lowder trails Smith with 20 catches for 271 yards.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Drops Game in Excruciating Fashion to Stephen F. Austin

Some games you lose, others slip right through your fingers. The latter happen to Marshall (2-2, 0-0) Thursday evening in a 80-73 overtime loss to Stephen F. Austin (3-1, 0-0) at the Cam Henderson Center. Up three points as the clock was about to expire, Thundering Herd forward TyQuane Goard inexplicably fouled Desmond Haymond while he was in the act of taking three-point shot. Haymond sunk all three of his free throw attempts, sending the Lumberjacks and Marshall into overtime.

In the extra period, Stephen F. Austin outscored the Herd 13-6, handing Marshall its second straight overtime loss.

Free throws continued to be a problem for the Thundering Herd. Marshall only converted eight of 24 attempts from the charity stripe. For the fourth straight game Elijah Pittman lead the Herd in scoring as he contributed 21 points.

Lumberjacks chop down Herd in OT

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Marshall Basketball: Opponent Profile, Stephen F. Austin

While Stephen F. Austin (2-1, 0-0) might not be a recognizable name to casual basketball fans, that makes them no less dangerous as they meet Marshall (2-1, 0-0) in the Cam Henderson Center this evening.

Last season the Lumberjacks won 27 games and the Southland Conference regular season championship. They also qualified for the National Invitation Tournament, losing to Stanford in the first round.

Stephen F. Austin landed two players on the SLC preseason All Conference team. A first team selection, guard Desmond Haymon leads the Lumberjacks with 14 points per game. He was joined by second team pick Jacob Parker. The 6-foot-6 forward averages a team high 5.7 rebounds per game and is third (12.3 ppg) in scoring.

An assistant under Frank Martin at South Carolina and Kansas State, Brad Underwood is three games deep into his tenure as Stephen F. Austin’s head coach. He has preached the same defensive principles that helped the Lumberjacks surrender an NCAA low 51.2 points per game last season. In wins over UT-Tyler and Texas State, SFA held the opposition under 65 points. Friday’s 72-62 loss at Texas broke a 66 game streak of limiting their opponents to 70 points or fewer.

Tip-off for tonight’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Marshall Football: Taking Stock in the Herd's Bowl Possibilities

Derek Redd of the Charleston Daily Mail has complied Marshall’s bowl projections from various outlets for 12 weeks. Now that we are entering late November, the Thundering Herds bowl picture is becoming less muddled. The experts have settled on three landing spots for Marshall and we are here to explore the merits of each.

Conference USA’s champion is ticketed to attend the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The Liberty Bowl is particularly attractive because the opponent is furnished by the South Eastern Conference. Most projections have Vanderbilt or Tennessee facing off against the C-USA champion. The good news, Marshall controls its own destiny. Two wins to end the regular season and a victory in the conference championship game would ensure a New Years Eve trip to Memphis.

If Marshall fails to capture the C-USA championship, two other bowls enter the forefront. Taking place at the Naval Academy’s Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Gumman pits C-USA against the Atlantic Coast Conference. A seven hour drive from Huntington, the Annapolis Md., based bowl is one of the most convenient travel options for Herd fans. The prospect of playing a BCS conference school is also appealing. Marshall biggest road block to Annapolis might be East Carolina. Like Marshall, ECU is an attractive option for the Military Bowl because of their proximity to the game site. Another important factor when deciding bowl bids, the Pirates are outdrawing Marshall by just under 20,000 fans per game this season. Although, the Military Bowl has shown interest in the Herd, sending representatives to watch two games at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

The final possibility is a familiar one to Herd fans, the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg. Marshall's last Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl was 2011, a 20-10 win over FIU. While located in a warm Florida location, the event is played indoors at Tropicana Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays. One of the game’s biggest drawbacks is opponent. The American Athletic Conference is suppose to supply a team but, with a shortage of bowl eligible schools the slot will probably be filled by the Mid-American or Sunbelt Conference.

The postseason picture will clear itself up over the next three weeks. At this point, it is still anyone's guess what will happen but, Marshall is in a good spot. Bowl eligible and a possible conference championship is a pleasant departure from years past.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Drops Overtime Decision to Morehead State, 102-94

In a drawn out contest that featured 79 fouls, it was appropriate that Marshall’s DeVince Boykins had a chance to score the game winning shot from the free throw line. Morehead State put Boykins at the charity stripe with the score tied at 86-86 and just over one second left on the clock. The sophomore’s first attempt barley hit the rim and his second shot completely missed the basket. After a desperation heave and miss by Morehead the game headed for overtime.

The Eagles completed their comeback from a 21 point first half deficit, outscoring Marshall 16-8 in the extra period to secure a 102-94 victory at Johnson Arena.

Elijah Pittman lead all scorers with 31 points but, it was not enough to overcome 26 Thundering Herd turnovers, nine alone by point guard Kareem Canty.

Marshall returns to action this Thursday in the Cam Henderson Center against Stephen F. Austin, tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Marshall Basketball: Three Ink Letters of Intent with Herd

The early signing period for college basketball opened last week and Marshall acted quickly, receiving three letters of intent by Saturday. The list includes two junior college players and a high school standout from neighboring Kentucky.

Henry Uwadiae, Center, Kirkwood Community College (Ia.)

A native of Nigeria, Henry Uwadiae came to America at age 16 for his first taste of organized basketball. He spent a year at Findlay Prep (Nv.) with additional stops at United Faith Christian Academy (Nc.) and Evelyn Mack Academy (Nc.).

Uwadiae gave a verbal commitment to Wichita State in July of 2011 but, he was ruled academically ineligible and never enrolled at the Missouri Valley Conference school.

Standing 6-foot-11, 228 pounds, Uwadiae spent a redshirt season at Kirkwood Community College last year and officially joined the basketball team this fall. He will have three years of eligibility remaining once at Marshall.

Uwadiae is regarded as a project, he grew up playing volleyball and did not concentrate on basketball until age 14.

Jay Johnson, Forward, John A. Logan College (Ill’s.)

As junior Jay Johnson averaged 18.9 points and 12.5 rebounds per game at Woodford County High School (Ky.). He overcame a torn ACL in the summer before his senior season to be selected for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Team. The same Kentucky squad featured current Thundering Herd basketball player Tamron Manning.

During his freshman season at John A. Logan College the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Once enrolled, he will have two years of eligibility with Marshall.

Shane Hall, Forward, Johnson Central High School (Ky.)

A 6-foot-9, 210 pound forward, Shane Hall is a standout player at Johnson Central High School (KY). Despite battling injuries to both ankles, he averaged 15.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game as a junior. Rivals, Scout, and ESPN all rank him as a three star prospect. According to reports, Hall also received recruiting interest from Butler, Tennessee, UAB, and Northern Kentucky.

Marshall Football: Herd Defeats Tulsa 45-34 on Emotional Night

It looked like a blowout, Marshall (7-3, 5-1) came out on fire at Tulsa (2-8, 1-5), scoring 21 unanswered first quarter points in what appeared to be an insurmountable deficit. The Golden Hurricanes had other ideas, taking advantage of five Thundering Herd turnovers to secure a 34-31 fourth quarter lead. Needing points, Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato engineered a 5 play, 39 yard drive capped by a touchdown pass to Tommy Shuler which put the Herd up for good. Marshall added a late touchdown, bringing the final score to 45-34.

Marshall Football: Fast Facts, Tulsa

Fourteen facts you need to know about Tulsa before tonight’s match-up against Marshall.

1) Tulsa’s offense is powered by one man, running back Trey Watts. Last season against Marshall, Watts carried the ball 18 times for 111 yards in a 45-38 Golden Hurricane victory. This year he leads the team in rushing and receiving. On the ground Watts has amassed 857 rushing yards on 178 attempts with six touchdowns. Through the air he has caught a team high 41 passes for 370 yards and a touchdown. Conference USA’s individual leader in total yards, Watts also returns kicks and punts for Tulsa.

2) Tulsa will start redshirt freshman quarterback Dane Evans against Marshall. In five games Evans has completed 50 of 110 attempts for 541 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. He is not a running threat.

3) Right guard Steston Burnett is Tulsa’s most experienced offensive lineman with 39 career starts. The preseason All C-USA First Team selection will likely miss tonight’s game with a ankle injury.

4) The Golden Hurricanes offensive line has done a good job keeping their quarterbacks jersey clean. Tulsa is surrendering a C-USA low 0.78 sacks per game.

5) Wide receiver Jordan James leads the Golden Hurricanes with 390 receiving yards. He had a quite Saturday against ECU last week, only catching two passes for 17 yards.

Total Offense – 9th, 369.4 ypg

7) Tulsa lost its defensive leader, strong safety Demarco Nelson, to an academic issue just before the season started. Nelson’s absence and the injury bug, at least nine starters have missed a game, heavily contributed to the Golden Hurricanes 2-7 record.

8) Linebacker Shawn Jackson leads C-USA with 13 tackles for loss. He has also recorded a team high three interceptions.

9) Safety Michael Mudoh leads Tulsa with 98 tackles.

10) Derrick Alexander has recorded a team high 5.5 sacks. The defensive end is also second on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss.

Rushing Defense -  9th, 190.78 ypg
Total Defense – 9th, 406.8 ypg

13) Golden Hurricane kicker Carl Salazar has converted 12 of 15 field goal attempts this season but, he has not attempted a field goal beyond 40 yards.

14) Freshman punter Dalton Parks does not have a big leg. His 39.95 yards per punt ranks him 10th among 12 C-USA punters that have at least 35 attempts.

We Are...Marshall

Forty three years ago today, November 14th 1970, a plane carrying 75 members of the Marshall University family crashed short of Tri-State Airport in Kenova W.V., killing all on board. Marshall Basketball: Edmonds to be Redshirted, Kambola Held Out

Speaking with reporters today, Marshall men’s basketball coach Tom Herrion announced that guard Justin Edmonds will be redshirted and forward JP Kambola has an eligibility issue that needs to be resolved before he can play.

A junior college transfer, Edmonds tore his ACL last December and will require a few more months of rehabilitation before returning to competition.

Herrion is optimistic that Kambola will be ruled eligible soon. During his three seasons at Marshall the 6-foot-9 junior forward has appeared in 20 games and scored ten points.

In other news, after scoring a career high 31 points against South Carolina State last Friday, Marshall’s Elijah Pittman was named Co-Conference USA Player of the Week. He splits this week’s honor with FIU senior Rakeem Buckles who averaged 17.7 points and 12 rebounds through the Panthers first three games at the Kennesaw State Tournament.

The Thundering Herd returns to action at the Cam Henderson Center tomorrow against Rio Grande, tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Marshall Football: Herd Should Continue to Honor “75” with Special Designation

Earlier this year the University of Michigan honored its first Heisman Trophy winner, Tom Harmon, with a special tribute. During a pregame ceremony the school unretired Harmon’s No. 98 jersey and bestowed it upon quarterback Devin Gardner. In addition to the number, Gardner and every Michigan football player to wear the legendary No. 98 going forward will have a special patch placed on their jersey, honoring the school’s first Heisman Trophy recipient.

Retiring numbers is a time honored way to commemorate special athletes but, the Wolverines unique twist brought added attention to the school and was well received.

In a column published on HerdZone.com, columnist Jack Bogaczyk floated the idea of retiring No. 75 for all sports in which Thundering Herd student-athletes compete. For those who missed yesterday’s news, the football team will wear a green “75” helmet decal at Tulsa, honoring the 75 sons and daughters of Marshall that perished on November 14th, 1970 when Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed while attempting to land at Tri-State Airport.

I certainly respect Bogaczyk’s idea and any tribute to the lives lost on Southern Airways Flight 932 deserves consideration but, I would go in a different direction. Like Michigan, Marshall should honor those lost by selecting one football player to wear No. 75.

By purposely choosing a special student-athlete to wear No. 75, Marshall would ensure that the story of November 14th, 1970 continues to be told. Imagine a national television broadcast featuring the Thundering Herd, No. 75 makes a big play and the announcers have an opportunity to discuss the meaning of his jersey number. Marshall’s story is heard in millions of homes and the legacy of those lost grows.

The individual chosen to wear No. 75 would embody everything the Marshall and Huntington WV., community stands for, perseverance, pride, and hard work. Think about the emotion a former player like Chad Pennington would have felt putting on No. 75.

Like the movie “We Are…Marshall” and Thursday’s yearly tribute at the Memorial Fountain, let’s use the No.75 as a way to honor our past and make sure it is never forgotten.

Marshall Football: Herd Honors 75 Lost in Plane Crash

This Thursday Marshall travels to Tulsa for the schools first road football game on November 14th since 1970. For those who don't know, November 14th will mark the 43rd anniversary of Southern Airways flight 932 which carried 37 members of Marshall's football team, eight coaches, 25 boosters, and five members of the flight crew. Returning from a game against East Carolina, the plane crashed while attempting to land at Tri-State Airport, killing all on board.

On campus, the Marshall community will gather at the Memorial Fountain to remember the 75 lives lost. Unable to participate in this years ceremony, the football team will don a special helmet decal to commemorate Thursday's anniversary.

Commissioner Britton Banowsky Touches on Issues Facing C-USA

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky was at Joan C. Edwards Stadium yesterday, taking in Marshall's 56-14 win over UAB. During his afternoon in Huntington, Banowsky spoke with reporters and touched on a few subjects facing C-USA.

1) Banowsky envisions at least a couple years of quite on the realignment front with no plans to grow C-USA. The league will feature 13 football playing members next year after the additions of Western Kentucky and Old Dominion. Tulsa, Tulane, and ECU are playing their final seasons in C-USA. In 2015 UNC Charlotte comes on board, bringing the total number of football schools back to 14.

2) Accommodating the additions of Western Kentucky and ODU to the East division, Southern Miss will move to the West next year. Banowsky was noncommittal but, expect UAB to join the Golden Eagles migration from East to West in 2014 or 2015. This is how next years football divisions will look:

East
Marshall
ODU
W. Kentucky
FAU
ODU
Middle Tennessee

West
UTEP
UTSA
N. Texas
Southern Miss
Rice
La.Tech

TBA - UAB

3) This year's C-USA basketball tournament is set for El Paso Texas but, anything beyond that is still up in the air. Bankowsky is open to the annual event rotating among a number of host city's. He specifically mentioned Charlotte, home of new C-USA member UNC Charlotte, as a possibility.

4) We touched on this during a earlier post but, C-USA will not have a set bowl destination for its champion. For 16 of the past 17 years the league champ headed to the Liberty Bowl.
