Marshall in the NFL: Training Camp Preview
With training camp set to open this week lets take at Marshall alumni in the NFL:
Chris Massey, LS, St. Louis Rams
2010 Review: After sitting out the majority of 2009 due to a knee injury Massey had a successful 2010 in St. Louis.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Enters training camp as the unquestioned starter at long snapper.
Chris Crocker, S, Cincinnati Bengals
2010 Review: Started at safety for the Bengals until a knee injury placed him on injured reserve week 11. Over 11 games Crocker registered 43 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 5 passes defended. Crocker’s knee injury did not require surgery this offseason.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Crocker is under contract with Cincinnati for 2011. Enters training camp as the incumbent starter at safety. The Bengals selected former WVU safety Chris Sands in the fifth round of this Aprils draft. Expect Sands to push Crocker for playing time.
Randy Moss, WR, FA
2010 Review: Moss started the season in New England but was trade to Minnesota after week 4. After four weeks with the Vikings, Moss was released and joined the Tennessee Titans where he finished the season. Moss’s 2010 stats, 28 receptions, 393 yards, and 5 touchdowns accounted for his least productive season in 13 years.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Moss is a free agent after his vagabond 2010 season. During the offseason it was rumored that the New York Jets might be interested in adding Moss if they lose Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards.
Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, FA
2010 Review: Won a starting spot out of camp and conducted a break out season. For the year Bradshaw had 276 rushing attempts for 1,235 yards and 8 touchdowns. Through the air Bradshaw accounted for 314 yards on 47 receptions. Bradshaw’s biggest deficiency was fumbles, he lost 6.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Bradshaw hits the free agent market for the first time this offseason. With his breakout campaign in 2010 Bradshaw is looking to be paid like a starting NFL running back. If New York does not bring him back the Miami Dolphins are a strong possibility for his services.
Doug Legursky, OL, Pittsburgh Steelers
2010 Season Review: In his third season with Pittsburgh Legursky made the 53 man roster out of training camp for the first time. During the season he started a couple of games at guard and saw spot duty along the interior offensive line. Legursky has also played fullback in Pittsburgh’s goal line package. Highlight of the season was starting at center in the Super Bowl for the injured Maurkice Pouncey.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Will fight to keep his job as a backup guard and center. Pittsburgh drafted one interior lineman this April, Keith Williams from Nebraska in the 6th round.
Byron Leftwich, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
2010 Season Review: Traded from Tampa Bay to compete with Dennis Dixon for Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback job while Ben Roethlisberger served an early season suspension. Dixon won the job and Leftwich did not see the field until week 17. For the year Leftwich completed 5 passes for 42 yards.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Leftwich will compete will fellow veteran Charlie Batch for the Steelers 3rd string QB spot.
C.J Spillman, S, San Francisco 49ers
2010 Season Review: Started the season in San Diego but was released after week 4 because of poor special teams play. Was immediately signed by San Francisco before week 5 and contributed on special teams with occasional spot duty at safety. In ten games for both clubs Spillman registered 19 tackles.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Scheduled to return with San Francisco. Will have to be a consistent presence on special teams to make the 53 man roster.
Chad Pennington, QB, FA
2010 Season Review: After a shoulder injury ended his 2009 season Pennington finally got a chance to start for Miami in week 10. Unfortunately, Pennington only attempted two passes as he re-injured his shoulder and spent the rest of 2010 on injured reserve. Stats, 1 completion on 2 attempts for 19 yards.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Pennington is taking a year off from the NFL, he has decided to join Fox Sports as a NFL broadcaster.
Daniel Baldridge, OL, Jacksonville Jaguars
2010 Season Review: Started the year on Jacksonville’s practice squad but was promoted to the 53 man roster for week 14. Spent the next four weeks on the Jaguars game day inactive list.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Will fight for a spot on the 53 man roster after spending last season on the practice squad. Jacksonville did not select any offensive lineman in April’s draft, could bring in veteran free agent to compete with Baldridge.
Albert McClellan, LB, Baltimore Ravens
2010 Season Review: Spent all of 2010 on the Ravens practice squad.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Signed a futures contract with Baltimore at the end of last season. Will fight for a spot on the 53 man roster after spending last season on the practice squad.
Cody Slate, TE, Kansas City Chiefs
2010 Season Review: Cut by the Kansas City Chiefs during training camp. The Chiefs brought Slate back to their practice squad after week 17.
2011 Training Camp Preview: Signed a futures contract with Kansas City at the end of last season. The Chiefs could lose blocking tight end Leonard Pope to free agency, possibly opening a spot for Slate.
Lee Smith, TE, New England Patriots:
2010 Season Review: N/A
2011 Training Camp Preview: Drafted by New England in the 5th round of the 2011 NFL draft. Will compete with veteran Alge Crumpler for the blocking tight end role. Could improve his chances of making the roster by long snapping and special teams play.
Mario Harvey, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers
2010 Season Review: N/A
2011 Training Camp Preview: Signed a undrafted free agent deal with Pittsburgh on July 26th. The Steelers did not draft any linebackers and so far, Harvey is the only undrafted free agent LB they have brought in.
Chris Massey, LS, St. Louis Rams
2010 Review: After sitting out the majority of 2009 due to a knee injury Massey had a successful 2010 in St. Louis.

Marshall Football: Home & Home with Navy official
Per HerdZone.com (Official home of Marshall Athletics)
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick has announced that the Thundering Herd football team has signed a deal to play Navy in a home-and-home football series starting in 2016.
"We are very excited in the future to host a program with the history and tradition of the U.S. Naval Academy," Hamrick said. "It is a special honor anytime you can play a military academy."
The series is set to begin in Annapolis, Md. on September 3, 2016 with Navy making the return trip to Huntington on October 13, 2018.
This will mark the first meeting between the Thundering Herd and the Midshipmen, but will mark the third game against one of the military academies. Marshall faced Army in 1920 and 1997, falling 38-0 at West Point in 1920 before topping the Black Knights by a 35-25 mark in 1997.
Since taking the helm of the Marshall University Department of Athletics in 2009, Hamrick has also inked home-and-home football series against high profile opponents including Louisville and Purdue along with renewing the rivalry against former Mid-American Conference foe Miami.

Member of Young Thundering Herd to Preach in Williamson WV
From the Williamson Daily News:
This weekend, a Texas-born evangelist, Dr. Ed Carter, who experienced back-to-back tragedies in 1970 while attending Marshall University on a full football scholarship, is the keynote speaker at the Calvary Baptist Church's revival services in West Williamson.
On Nov. 14 of that year, the plane that was carrying the Marshall football team home after a heartbreaking 17-14 loss to East Carolina University in Greenville, crashed not far from the Tri-State Airport, killing the 75 Marshall University football players, coaches and fans.
Carter wasn't on the plane, although his name was listed among those of the 75 deceased passengers. Carter's father had died and Ed traveled to Texas to attend the funeral. His decision to remain with his grieving mother an extra day that weekend saved his life. Ed read his own death notice in the paper as he read about the loss of his teammates.
Dr. Carter will be speaking at the Calvary Baptist Church at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. this Sunday and at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights. The Rev. Aaron Rohde, pastor of the church, and his congregation extend an invitation to the public to join them and hear Dr. Carter tell about the decisions he made after the plane crash and the death of his father that steered him into a satisfying life in the ministry.

Video: Tyler Wilkerson playing overseas in Israel
Former Marshall basketball player Tyler Wilkerson made the news last week, signing a new two year contract with his Israeli basketball team Maccabi Haifa.
Scouring the internet I found a video from “Inside Israeli Basketball” detaling Maccabi Haifa’s recently completed season. Click on the link below (show 7, season 2) to watch, Wilkerson makes his first appearance around the four minute mark.

C-USA Football: UCF found negligent in players death
From the Orlando Sentinel:
A jury ruled the UCF Athletics Association was negligent in the 2008 death of football player Ereck Plancher and awarded his parents $10 million. The group spent about five hours deliberating Thursday night, the 14th day of the Plancher wrongful death trial.
Attorneys representing UCFAA and Plancher's family completed closing arguments Thursday afternoon. The six jurors began deliberation at about 5:30 p.m. Once the group determined UCFAA was negligent and failed to do everything possible to save Plancher's life, it entered the amount of damages it believed should be awarded to Enock and Gisele Plancher, Ereck Plancher's parents. The total was $5 million apiece.
