Marshall Football: PSU Transfer Shawney Kersey Quits Team

First reported by Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon and later confirmed by various outlets, Marshall wide receiver Shawney Kersey has left the football program.

Kersey started his college career at Penn State, catching 12 passes for 154 yards between his redshirt freshman and junior year. After entering the 2012 season as the Nittnay Lions most experienced receiver Kersey quit the team after two games, citing personal reasons.

Kersey resurfaced at Marshall in January, joining fellow Penn State transfers Derrick Thomas and Devon Smith with the Thundering Herd. When spring practice started in April, Kersey was described as talented but raw by wide receivers coach Mike Furrey.

It became clear during preseason camp that Kersey had fallen behind Davonte Allen and Smith at the X receiver position. Kersey’s name was not listed when Marshall released its depth chart before last Saturday’s game against Miami (OH).
