In out of conference play, Southern Miss had a tough time against Boise State, getting blown out 40-14. UAB earned a win, defeating FCS member South East Louisiana 52-3.

Looking out West, SMU beat UTEP in a battle of Texas schools 17-0. Outgoing C-USA member Houston handled future league member North Texas 44-21 and Tulane remained winless, dropping a 41-13 decision to Louisiana Lafayette.
