CINCINNATI, Ohio - A pair of second half goals by Fayanga Katai (Roanoke, Va.) and Sammy Boateng (Accra, Ghana) propelled the Marshall Thundering Herd to a 3-1 victory over IUPUI in their final exhibition match of the 2009 season.
Freshman Zack Hunter (Marietta, Ga.) netted the Herd's first goal of the year as his diving header found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Fellow freshman David Lipinsky (Hudson, Ohio) provided the cross with his left foot which Hunter buried away to give Marshall a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Katai, who was just cleared to participate yesterday, got the start up top, and tallied the game winning goal as he slotted his shot to the far post past IUPUI's goalie Tyler Keever in the 70th minute. Diego Ayala (San Antonio, Texas) had the assist.
Boateng added an insurance goal in the just four minutes later as Katai found Boateng wide open on the back post for an easy tap in.
Tuesday's match concludes the preseason for the Thundering Herd as they now prepare for their opening match of the 2009 season when they take on the Falcons of Bowling Green in Ohio. Game time on Sept. 1 is scheduled for 1 p.m.
