Marshall Basketball: Justin Coleman suspended indefinitely

Marshall head basketball coach Tom Herrion has suspended freshman guard Justin Coleman indefinitely for a unspecified violation of team rules. Multiple reports indicate that Coleman was using a cell phone on the bench during Thursday's road loss at Belmont.

Marshall Football: Report - Mike Cassity leaves for UK

Take this with a grain of salt but, FootballScoop.com is reporting that Marshall secondary coach Mike Cassity has accepted the same position at Kentucky. Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch was the first to report on Cassity's possible departure last week. Cassity, a Kentucky graduate, has been the secondaries coach at Marshall for two seasons.

FootballScoop.com has been unreliable in the past but, given Landon's article last week, it looks like Marshall will be looking for a new defensive backs coach.

Marshall Basketball: Bruins down Herd 79-74

Belmont used 17 Marshall turnovers to defeat the Herd 79-74 at home Thursday night. Marshall was lead by DeAndre Kane who scored 25 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Thundering Herd forward Robert Goff also had a big night registering a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Marshall Football: Daniel Baldridge promoted to 53 man roster

Former Marshall offensive lineman Daniel Baldridge has been promoted to the Jacksonville Jaguars 53 man roster. Baldridge spent four weeks at the end of 2010 on Jacksonville's active roster and has been on the practice squad all of this season. The promotion means that Baldridge will be under contract with the Jaguars when this season ends.

Marshall Football: Kent Turene to Prop at Marshall

Marshall commitment Kent Turene will not join the football team for spring practice or the 2012 season. Turene will enroll at Marshall in January or August and "prop", using that time to get academically eligible.

Marshall Football: Andre Scott commits to Herd

Per Rivals, Andre Scott, the nations 61st best cornerback prospect for 2012 has committed to Marshall University. Standing in at 5'11, 175 lbs, Scott also had scholarship offers from many BCS programs including North Carolina, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Scott played a slash role for Orlando Florida's Oak Ridge High School, lining up at quarterback, defensive back, wide receiver, and returner.

Marshall Football: Phil Ratliff leaving for Charlotte

Phil Ratliff, Marshall's tight ends coach for the past six seasons is leaving to join the coaching staff at UNC Charlotte. A FCS program, Charlotte will field a football team for the first time in 2013.

Ratliff will be the lead recruiter and offensive line coach under former Marshall assistant Brad Lambert, who is leading the 49ers new football program.

Marshall Football: Gage Niemeyer commits to Herd

Doc Holliday has added his fifth offensive line commitment to the class of 2012. Gage Niemeyer, a 6'6, 305 lbs guard from Mount San Jacinto Community College (CA) will enroll at Marshall University in January and be eligible for spring practice. A three star prospect according to Rivals, Niemeyer also had scholarship offers from Nevada and New Mexico State.

Marshall Football: Corey Tindal commits to Herd

Corey Tindal, a 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, defensive back from the Atlanta Sports Academy (GA) committed to Marshall University.

Playing running back for Boyd Anderson High School (FL), Tindal was rated a three star prospect in the class of 2010 by Rivals.com. Tinal signed a letter of intent to FIU but failed to qualify and spent this past fall at the Atlanta Sports Academy.

One of Tindal's teammates, linebacker Kent Turene committed to Marshall last week. It is possible that both Turene and Tindal could enroll this January and be eligible for spring practice.

Marshall Thundering Blog Holiday Break

The Marshall Thundering Blog will be taking a holiday break, starting on December 22nd and running through January 2nd. During that time the MTB will not be updated as usual, Monday through Friday. During the break we will be making occasional post on any big Marshall University athletic news.

Last but certainly not least we would like to wish all our readers a happy holiday season. Thanks to you we almost doubled our hits from 2010 to 2011. Look forward to seeing you all again in 2012!

Marshall Basketball: Herd takes down WVU Tech 99-80

Marshall used a huge 48-28 first half advantage to take down West Virginia Tech 99-80 Wednesday night. Dago Pena paced the Herd with 28 points and Dennis Tinnon recorded another double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds (eight just on offense) and 12 points.

C-USA Football: Southern Miss hires Ellis Johnson as next football coach

Conference USA member Southern Mississippi has a new football coach, South Carolina assistant Ellis Johnson. Johnson, Steve Spurrier's assistant head coach for defense, previously worked at Southern Miss as defensive coordinator from 1988 to 1989.

Marshall Football: Former Herd WR featured in OTL Report

Former NFL and Marshall University wide receiver Nate Pool was featured in a report by ESPN’s Outside The Lines. The report centered on the shady dealings of North Carolina Tech head coach and headmaster Tim Newman. A post graduate school, North Carolina Tech’s student body only consist of it’s football team.

The Outside The Lines report found that Newman was falsifying information to lure recruits to his school and found little to no academic work occurred at North Carolina Tech. Pool, a former assistant coach at N.C Tech, spoke out against Newman in the story, leveling allegations of fraud against his former employer.

Marshall in the NFL, Week 15

Weekly review of Marshall University alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

For the first time in a number of weeks Ahmad Bradshaw lead the Giants in rushing, recording 58 yards on ten carries and one touchdown. Bradshaw also caught three passes for 21 yards during New York’s 23-10 loss to Washington.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman recorded two special teams tackles Monday night as the 49ers beat Pittsburgh 20-3.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Chris Crocker fought off a lingering knee injury and started at safety during Cincinnati’s 20-13 win over St. Louis. During the game Crocker registered three tackles but was also flagged for a roughing the passer penalty.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Starting at center in place of the injured Maurkice Pouncey, Doug Legursky and Pittsburgh’s offensive line struggled all night, allowing Ben Roethlisberger to be sacked three times. Pittsburgh lost at San Francisco on Monday Night Football 20-3.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

With Ray Lewis back in the starting lineup Albert McClellan was relegated to backup and special teams duty, recording two tackles during Baltimore’s 34-14 loss at San Diego.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

Lee Smith was carted off the field with an ankle injury during the third quarter of Buffalo’s 30-23 loss to Miami. Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey has already ruled Smith out for next weeks game against Denver.

Marshall Basketball: MU squeaks by Belmont 87-86

With five seconds left on the clock Belmont's Kerron Johnson fouled Marshall's Damier Pitts, sending him and the Herds 87-86 lead to the free throw line. Pitts, one of MU's most reliable free throw shooters, missed both shots, sending Johnson streaking down the court for a game winning layup as time expired. Fortunately for Marshall and Pitts, Johnson's attempt rolled off the rim, leaving the Thundering Herd with a 87-86 victory.

Beyond the win it was an extra special night for two Marshall players. Forward Dennis Tinnon registered a double-double (10 rebounds) while scoring a career high 24 points. DeAndre Kane also established a new career high with 29 points.

Tinnon was not the only Marshall player to record a double-double. Point guard Damier Pitts scored 19 points and lead the team with 11 assist.

Marshall set new season highs in points scored (87) and points allowed (86) Monday evening. The Herd also had it's best night from the three point line, hitting six of 14 shots. As has been the story all season Marshall out rebounded it's opponent, grabbing 39 rebounds to Belmont's 31.

Marshall Football: Kent Turene set to enroll at MU

Per Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch, Kent Turene a 6-foot-3, 230 pound, linebacker from the Atlanta Sports Academy (GA), will enroll at Marshall next semester.

As a high school senior in 2010 Scout.com ranked Turene as the nations 18th best linebacker prospect. Turene accepted a scholarship to Georgia but failed to qualify academically and never enrolled. Turene spent this fall at the Atlanta Sports Academy for a post-graduate semester and traveled to Marshall on October 15th for an official visit. According to Landon, Turene still has eligibility issues and is not likely to join the team for spring practice.

Marshall Football: Ken Smith commits to Herd

Ken Smith, a 6'4, 285 lbs defensive tackle from Blinn Community College (TX) has committed to Marshall University. Despite never playing a down of varsity football Smith drew interest from several division one programs coming out of high school but, he ultimately decided to work on his game at the junior college level. A three star prospect according to Rivals, Smith also had a scholarship offer from Ohio.

Marshall Basketball: Herd beats down High Point 79-59

Five Marshall players scored in double digits as the Thundering Herd took down High Point 79-59 at home Saturday evening.

For the first time in his collegiate career Justin Coleman lead MU in points with 16. He also grabbed five rebounds and distributed two assist. Junior college transfer Robert Goff registered a double-double with an even ten points and rebounds Beyond Goff and Coelman, DeAndre Kane (14), Damier Pitts (10), and Shaquille Johnson (10), also scored in double digits.

As a team Marshall out rebounded High Point 40 to 28. The Herd also caused 16 turnovers while only giving away the ball six times. Marshall shot 44 percent from the floor but, had trouble beyond the arc again, only hitting eight of 31 attempts.

The Herd (7-2,0-0) will host Belmont (7-4, 2-0) in the Cam Henderson Center Monday night at 7pm. Belmont played at Miami (OH) this evening and suffered a 66-61 defeat.

Marshall Football: High School coaching connections

A number of former Marshall University players and coaches are now leading high school football teams around the country. Here is a short list of MU alumni currently coaching at the high school level and a summary of their 2011 season. If I left any one out please let me know by leaving a comment in this post.

1) George Chaump, Central Dauphin H.S (Harrisburg PA), Marshall head football coach 1986-1989

A long time High School football coach in the Harrisburg Pennsylvania area, George Chaump lead Central Dauphin to a 5-6 record during his first season at the school.

2) John Shannon, Biloxi H.S (Biloxi MS), Marshall offensive coordinator under Mark Snyder

During his second year at Biloxi High School, John Shannon lead the Indians to a 10-3 regular season record. Biloxi’s season ended in a second round playoff loss to Petal High School, 38-27.

3) Chris Hanson, Trinity Christian School (Sharpsburg GA), Marshall punter 1996-1999

Trinity Christian School took it’s lumps this season transitioning from eight to eleven man football, finishing with a 1-8 record. It was former Marshall punter Chris Hanson’s first year leading the program.

4) Luke Salmons, Cabell Midland H.S (Ona WV), Marshall offensive lineman 2001-2003

In his first season as head coach at Cabell Midland High School, Luke Salmons lead the Knights to 8-4 regular season before losing to Bridgeport in the second round of West Virginia’s AAA playoffs. One of Salmons star players, linebacker Ryan Riedel, has accepted a scholarship to play at Marshall next year.

C-USA to vote on MWC merger in January

Per a report in the Las Vegas Review Journal, Conference USA will vote in January to either join forces with the Mountain West Conference in all sports or, continue with a football only merger.

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

Conference USA's presidents will meet Jan. 15 in Dallas to decide if that league will merge with the Mountain West Conference, a source involved in the negotiations said Monday.

The source, who didn't want to be named discussing a sensitive matter that has not been finalized, said the presidents will talk about either proceeding with the football-only merger previously agreed to or uniting in all sports.

He described momentum toward a merger as "full speed ahead to get this thing done." A merger could take place next year, but more likely it would be in 2013, after Boise State and San Diego State join three C-USA schools in entering the Big East Conference.

It’s official, Marshall goes all in on kelly green

At yesterday’s board of governors meeting a resolution was passed to adopted kelly green as Marshall University’s official color. The switch from Marshall’s current darker shade of green to kelly green will become official January 1st.

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw was benched for an undisclosed violation of team rules during the first half of New York’s 37-24 win over Dallas. When he did play Bradshaw accumulated 12 rushing yards on eight carries and one reception for seven yards.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

Playing special teams for the 49ers, C.J Spillman recorded two tackles during San Francisco’s 21-19 loss to Arizona.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Despite four tackles and a sack from safety Chris Crocker the Cincinnati Bengals fell to Houston 20-19.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Doug Legursky started the Steelers 14-3 win over Cleveland at left guard but finished at center, replacing the injured Maurkice Pouncey.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

Albert McClellan continued to receive extended playing time while Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis recovers from injury, recording one tackle during Baltimore’s 24-10 win over Indianapolis.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

Lee Smith got his first NFL start during Buffalo’s 37-10 loss to San Diego, recording one catch for zero yards.

Marshall Football: Gunnar Holcombe commits to Herd

Gunnar Holcombe, a 6’2, 185 lbs quarterback from University School (FL) has verbally committed to Marshall University. A three star prospect according to Rivals, Holcombe lead University School to a undefeated regular season before losing in the second round of Florida’s 2A playoffs. For his senior season Holcombe threw for 2,294 yards, completing 66 percent of his passes while tossing 29 touchdowns to only seven interceptions.

Marshall Football: Norvell switches commitment, Wells also out

Per Rivals.com, Trenton Norvell has switched his verbal commitment from Marshall University to Cincinnati. Norvell, a 6'5, 220 lbs quarterback from Seabreeze High School (FL) was the Herd's only commitment at quarterback for the class to 2012. According to Rivals recruiting database, Marshall only has one scholarship offer out to a un-committed QB, University School's (FL) Gunnar Holcombe. Holcombe was scheduled for a official visit to Huntington in October but could not make the trip.

One other recruiting note, Magna Vista High School (VA) defensive end Antonio Wells is no longer listed as a Marshall commitment on Rivals.

C-USA suffers departures, plan in place for future

It became official yesterday, Conference USA members Houston, SMU, and UCF left for the Big East. Below, I have collected a few articles on the situation and how C-USA plans to move forward.

1) Boston Globe article on the Big East adding Houston, SMU, and UCF in all sports plus, Boise State and San Diego State as football only members. Per the article each school will become official Big East members in 2013.

2) Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky hints that the league could add new institutions beyond the Mountain West merger in this Tulsa World article.

3) Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports reports that C-USA and the Mountain West are headed for a all sports merger, not just football.

4) The Air Force academy will not leave the Mountain West for the Big East, report.

C-USA Football: Tigers hire Fuente's, Jones rebuked by ASU

Two quick notes on the Conference USA football coaching front:

1) The Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting that the University of Memphis is set to hire TCU co-offensive coordinator Justin Fuente as their next football coach. Fuente’s has been at TCU since 2007, starting out as running backs coach before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2009. Memphis will officially announce the hire in a new conference later today.

2) Yesterday afternoon it appeared that SMU head football coach June Jones was leaving for Arizona State. One report indicated Jones had pulled his assistance off the recruiting trail to inform them of his decision but, something unexpected happen. According to this Arizona Republic article, ASU president Michael Crow decided to end negotiations with Jones.

Marshall Football: Vinny Curry named C-USA defensive player of the year

From Conference USA’s press release:

Conference USA announced its 2011 Players of the Year today, as selected by the league's 12 head football coaches. C-USA is completing its 16th football campaign by sending five teams to bowl games, including two that are ranked in the top 20.

Defensive recognition went to Marshall senior DE Vinny Curry, who becomes the second Thundering Herd player to win that honor, joining DE Albert McClellan in 2006. A finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, Curry is second nationally with 21.5 tackles for loss, tied for second nationally with six forced fumbles and tied for fifth with 11 sacks. His 48.0 career tackles for loss is also tops among all active FBS student-athletes, while his 26.5 sacks rank him seventh. The senior captain also has 72 tackles on the season, one fumble recovery, three blocked extra points and one tackle for safety. Curry, who was also selected to the 2012 Senior Bowl, was named Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week following his 4.0 TFL, 3.5 sack performance in the 24-20 homecoming win over Rice on Oct. 15.

C-USA Football: Larry Fedora leaves for UNC, June Jones to ASU?

It looks like Conference USA is about to have two more coaching vacancies.

Multiple reports indicate that Larry Fedora has accepted the head coaching position at North Carolina. Fedora’s name has been associated with the UNC job ever since he lead Southern Mississippi to an upset victory over Houston in the C-USA championship game.

Laken Litman, who covers SMU athletics for Fox Sports and Scout.com, just tweeted that Mustangs head coach June Jones pulled his assistants off the recruiting trail for an emergency meeting. The meeting is supposedly to discuss Jones leaving SMU for Arizona State.

C-USA Football: Curtis Johnson hired as Tulane head coach

New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson won’t need to relocate for his new job. On Monday Tulane named Johnson their new head football coach. Johnson has spent the past five years helping orchestrate one of the NFL’s best passing attacks. This season New Orleans leads the league in total offense and passing yards. Prior to the Saints, Johnson was a noted recruiter and receivers coach at the University of Miami where he molded future NFL stars Andre Johnson, Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne.

Johnson replaces Bob Toledo who resigned in October after accumulating a record of 15-40 over four and a half seasons.

Marshall Basketball: Syracuse downs Herd 62-56

Despite out scoring Syracuse 38-31 in the second half Marshall could not over come a 31-18 half time deficit as the Orange defeated MU 62-56 in the Carrier Dome Tuesday night.

Junior Forward Dennis Tinnon lead the Herd with 17 points and 15 rebounds, registering a double-double. Point guard Damier Pitts was the only other Marshall player to reach double figures, scoring ten points. Defending Conference USA rookie of the year DeAndre Kane had a solid night, recording nine points while distributing five assist and grabbing seven rebounds .

Both teams had trouble scoring as Syracuse held Marshall to a .319 field goal percentage. The Orange did not fair much better against MU's defense, only converting 22-62 field goal attempts. Marshall continued it's seven game streak of out rebounding opponents as the Herd recorded 31 rebounds to Syracuse's 25.

Report: Three C-USA members to leave for Big East tomorrow

Per Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports, three Conference USA schools Houston, SMU, and UCF will announce they are joining the Big East tomorrow as full members. Boise State and San Diego State are also joining the Big East but, as football only participants.

Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and UCF will join the Big East Conference in 2013, sources told CBSSports.com. The announcement is expected to be made on Wednesday.

Boise State and San Diego State will join the Big East as football-only members, while Houston, SMU and UCF will join as all-sport members. Boise State is expected to put its non-football sports in the WAC, while SanDiego State would place its non-football sports in the Big West, sourcestold CBSSports.com.

With the addition of those five schools -- minus the departures of West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse -- the Big East will have 10 football members.With those five schools on board, Navy is expected to join as a football-only member - possibly as soon as next week - to boost the football membership to 11 schools.

The Big East hopes to add Air Force as its 12th football school - as a football-only member - but the Falcons still remain undecided.

Marshall Football: Vinny Curry and Omar Brown named 1st team all C-USA

Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry and safety Omar Brown were named first team all Conference USA’s selections earlier today. Curry started 2011 as the C-USA preseason defensive player of the year and did not disappoint, registering 11 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 72 total tackles, and a league-high six forced fumbles. Brown was the anchor of Marshall’s secondary this season, recording a team high 107 tackles while snagging 3 interceptions.

Besides Curry and Brown Marshall had two offensive players selected as honorable mentions, offensive lineman Ryan Tillman and wide receiver Aaron Dobson.

Weekly review of Marshall University alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw returned to action after missing four weeks with a broken bone in his foot during New York’s (NFC) 38-35 loss to Green Bay. For the game Bradshaw recorded 11 carries for 38 yards, he also caught two passes for nine yards.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman did not register a tackle during San Francisco’s 26-0 win over St.Louis.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Chris Crocker had a solid yet unspectacular outing during Cincinnati’s 35-7 loss to Pittsburgh, recording three tackles.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Starting at left guard for a second week in a row Doug Legursky and the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated Cincinnati 35-7.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

After making his first career start last week in place of the injured Ray Lewis, Albert McClellan had a quite game against the Cleveland Browns, failing to register a tackle. Baltimore beat Cleveland 24-10.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

It was a monumental day for Lee Smith during Buffalo’s 23-17 loss to Tennessee. Not only did Smith record his first NFL reception he also lead all Bills tight ends with three catches for 11 yards.

Season over, Lawrence County finished with a 5-7 record.

2. Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Season over, Richlands finished with a 11-1 record.

3. Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

Season over, Seabreeze finished with a 7-4 record.

4. Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

Season over, Cabell Midland finished with a 8-4 record.

It was close, but Armwood kept their season alive Friday night with a 17-14 win over Gainesville. The Gainesville defense keyed on stopping Armwood’s rushing attack, limiting Florida bound running back Matt Jones to only 18 yards. Fortunately, the Armwood offensive line gave quarterback Alvin Bailey enough time to accumulate 192 yards through the air.

8. Zach Hall, OL, Port Charlotte High School (FL)

Season over, Port Charlotte finished with a 2-10 record.

9. Lavar Highsmith, LB, Dunbar High School (MD)

Dunbar capture it’s second straight Maryland 1A championship with a 32-11 win over Perryville Saturday afternoon. Lavar Highsmith was Dunbar’s second leading rusher, accumulating 55 yards on seven carries. He also returned two kicks for a total of 79 yards.

Marshall Football: Herd to play FIU in Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl

Per the Charleston Daily Mail:

Marshall's bowl game destination is St. Petersburg, Fla., for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, the Charleston Daily Mail has learned.

The bowl will pit the Thundering Herd (6-6) against Florida International (8-4) of the Sun Belt Conference. The game will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 20 and have an 8 p.m. kickoff (ESPN telecast).

Marshall Football: Montrell Dobbs commits to Herd

Montrell Dobbs, a 5'11, 185 lbs running back from Milford Academy (NY) has switched his verbal commitment to Marshall University. Dobbs gave a verbal pledge to the University of Connecticut in June but had recently re-opened his recruitment. If he can pass through the NCAA clearing house Dobbs might enroll at Marshall in January.

As a senior at Anosia High School (CT), Dobbs accumulated 3,345 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns. Dobbs spent this fall at Milford Academy where he rushed for 1,387 yards and 21 touchdowns.

This will not be Doc Holliday's first commitment from Milford. Current Marshall running back Travon Vann attended the school after leaving Florida. Also, fellow 2012 commitment Levern Jacobs is Dobbs teammate with the Falcons.

Marshall Basketball: Baines & Thomas begin professional careers

After being selected in Novembers NBA Developmental League draft, former Marshall standouts Tirrell Baines and Johnny Thomas have begun to make an impact during their rookie seasons.

Baines landed with the Erie BayHawks as a forth round selection and already found his way into the starting lineup. During Erie’s December 1st game against the Maine Red Claws Baines made his first start, registering 12 points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes of play.

In the Springfield Armor's lone game this season Thomas played eleven minutes, grabbing three rebounds while dishing out one assist. Thomas will get a chance to improve on those numbers tonight as Springfield host the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

UTEP AD says C-USA & MWC headed for full merger

In a press conference to announce football coach Mike Price would return for another season, UTEP athletic director Bob Stull indicated that Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference would merge in all sports, not just football as previously announced.

Stull - “There’s a transition in the league that’s happening right now. That again, the Mountain West and Conference USA are basically merging. The initial thought was football only, but it’s moving more toward all sports at this point.”

“It will be done by the end of this year. There was a 90-day window that we thought we could even get transitioned to next year. But right now what’s happening is all those people talking about going to the Big East, there’s been a lot of obviously issues on that happening, so we don’t really know who’s in and who’s out at this point.”

“I can tell you that merger will happen with the Mountain West. Unless something really dramatic happens, we will do that. And there’s a fairly good chance we’ll be playing a lot back into the west side. Especially if we lose SMU and Houston to the Big East, if they go there, then obviously most of the Texas schools are gone and it makes a lot of sense for us to play New Mexico, Las Vegas, etc. But that’s still speculative and in process.”

Marshall Football: Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl looks probable, time to root for USF & UCONN

In his Thursday Charleston Daily Mail column Jack Bogaczky interviewed Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl chairman Brett Dulaney who called Marshall a front runner for the games Conference USA slot. If chosen for the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, Marshall will likely face a Big East or Sun Belt opponent.

Marshall fans pulling for a Herd vs. Big East matchup should root for South Florida and Connecticut. Both schools have five wins and need an additional victory to gain bowl eligibility. USF host West Virginia tonight at 8pm on ESPN while Connecticut travels to Cincinnati on Saturday. If either USF or UCONN win, the Big East should have enough bowl eligible teams to fill their Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl obligation.

Marshall Basketball: Herd suffers first lost of season, Ohio 70 MU 68

With his team down two points as the clock clicked towards zero DeAndre Kane's jumper clanked off the rim, sealing a 70-68 Ohio victory and Marshall's first loss of the season. Marshall trailed by nine at the half and used a 13 to three run in the final six minutes to set up Kane's game winning attempt.

The Herd struggled mightily on defense all night, allowing Ohio to shot 50% from the floor. Beyond poor defense Marshall only out rebounded the Bobcats by one (36-35) and committed 13 turnovers, six by Kane. Marshall also left a ton of points on the free throw line, barley shooting over 50% (21-38).

In a Jekyll and Hyde night Kane lead MU with 17 points. Three other Herd players, Dennis Tinnon (12), Robert Goff (11), and Damier Pitts (10), all scored in double digits. Tinnon secured a double double with 14 rebounds while Pitts chipped in seven assist.

Marshall Football: Bowl Watch

I found an interesting article on al.com breaking down potential matchups in Birmingham Alabama’s BBVA Compass Bowl. In today’s Charleston Daily Mail Jack Bogaczyk speculated that the BBVA Compass and Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl (St. Petersburg Florida) are Marshall’s two most likely destinations when the Bowl dust settles.

Weekly review of Marshall University alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw sat out his forth straight game while recovering from a foot injury. The Giants lost to New Orleans 49-24.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman registered two special teams tackles during San Francisco’s 16-6 loss to Baltimore.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Playing the rival Cleveland Browns, Chris Crocker recorded two tackles in a 23-20 Bengals victory.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Doug Legursky started a left guard during Pittsburgh’s 13-9 win over Kansas City.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

Albert McClellan played extensively in place of injured Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, recording two tackles during Baltimore’s 16-6 win over San Francisco.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

After being inactive last week Lee Smith was on Buffalo’s game day roster but did not register any stats during the Bills 28-24 loss to New York (AFC).

Marshall Football: Blake Frohnapfel has shoulder surgery

Per Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail:

Marshall officials have confirmed that true freshman quarterback Blake Frohnapfel had a scheduled arthroscopic procedure on his right shoulder Monday morning, but his status for the Herd’s bowl game and beyond is not yet known.

Marshall Football: Verbal Commitment Watch, Week 15

The Marshall Thundering Blog looks back on last weeks high school football action and reviews the performance of each Marshall University verbal commitment.

1. Tyler Combs, OL, Lawrence County High School (KY)

Season over, Lawrence County finished with a 5-7 record.

2. Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Richlands undefeated season ended Friday night in a 35-21 playoff loss to Cave Springs. Even in defeat Devon Johnson had an impressive game, racking up 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

3. Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

Season over, Seabreeze finished with a 7-4 record.

4. Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

Season over, Cabell Midland finished with a 8-4 record.

5. Antonio Wells, DE, Magna Vista High School (VA)

Just like fellow Marshall commitment Devon Johnson, Antonio Wells perfect regular season ended with a playoff loss. Christiansburg defeated Magna Vista 46-12 Friday night, ending Wells high school career.

6. Matt Cincotta, LS/LB, Charlotte Catholic High School (NC)

Charlotte Catholic’s season came to an end Friday night with a 35-28 playoff loss to Crest. Despite losing, Matt Cincotta was perfect on all his long snap attempts during the game.

7. Cameron Dees, OL, Armwood High School (FL)

Armwood advanced in the Florida 6A playoffs Friday night, shutting out Hillsborough 23-0. Cameron Dees and the Armwood offensive line helped the Hawks to 280 rushing yards during the victory.

Season over, Port Charlotte finished with a 2-10 record.

9. Lavar Highsmith, LB, Dunbar High School (MD)

Dunbar advanced to the Maryland 1A state championship game with a 42-6 win over Overlea Friday evening.

C-USA Football: UAB & Memphis looking for new coaches

Two Conference USA schools are looking for new head football coaches. Yesterday Memphis fired Larry Porter after he amassed a 3-21 record in two seasons with the Tigers. UAB also announced that Neal Callaway would not be back next season. In five seasons with the Blazers Callaway only won 18 games while racking up 42 losses.

In terms of potential replacements, the Memphis Commercial Appeal speculates that the Tigers could go after Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze or former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. As for UAB, al.com says the Blazers will attempt to bring in a young coordinator or head coach from an FCS school. This article suggest that Houston offensive coordinator Jason Phillips and George Southern head coach Jeff Monken are potential candidates.
