Marshall Basketball: Chris Duhon Added to Staff

Reaching back to his NBA roots, Marshall basketball coach Dan D'Antoni will reportedly add former Duke standout Chris Duhon to the Thundering Herd's coaching staff.

Over a nine year NBA career Duhon averaged 25.6 minutes, 6.5 points, and 4.4 rebounds per game with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers. Duhon played under D'Antoni and his brother, former NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni, in New York and L.A.

A Duke alum, Duhon ended his Blue Devils career as the schools all time leader in steals and minutes played. He is also the second winningest player in program and Atlantic Coast Conference history.

Duhon has never severed as a coach, much less at the college level. His exact title and role with Marshall's coaching staff has not been announced.

WSAZ sports reporter Rich Donnelly caught up with Duhon in Huntington, watch the interview by clicking here.

Marshall Basketball: Brantley and Uwadiae Headed Elsewhere

They might not have played a game for Marshall, but Jaylen Brantley and Henry Uwadiae made a impact on the Thundering Herd's basketball program today.

Formerly one of the top 100 basketball recruits in the country, Brantley will transfer from Marshall after sitting out the 2013-2014 season as a academic non-qualifier. A 5-foot-10 point guard from Springfield, Mass., Brantley is leaving the Herd for a junior college in Texas.

Marshall also lost the tallest member of its recruiting class as Uwadiae, 6-foot-10 center, was granted a release from his letter of intent. Uwadiae spent last season at Kirkwood Community College where he averaged 1.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.

Counting those players returning to Marshall and incoming recruits Shane Hall and Jay Johnson, recently hired basketball coach Dan D'Antoni is one scholarship below the NCAA limit of 13.

Marshall Football: Green & White Game Ends Spring Practice

Marshall wrapped up spring football practice yesterday with the annual green and white game. This years edition had a special twist as former Thundering Herd quarterbacks Chad Pennington and Byron Leftwich picked each team.

As with the rest of spring practice, yesterdays game was highlighted by the backup quarterback battle. Redshirt sophomore Gunnar Holcombe lead the way, completing 11 of 18 attempts for 220 yards, three touchdowns, and a interception. Holcombe's favorite target was wide receiver Justin Hunt, who finished his day with two touchdowns on three receptions and 153 yards.

Participating in his first spring game, freshman Cole Garvin tossed a touchdown and two interceptions while converting 10 of 17 passes for 109 yards. Kevin Anderson received the least amount of playing time between the three backup quarterbacks. He only attempted four passes, completing none while throwing a interception.

A former quarterback at Huntington High School, walk-on defensive back Mark Shaver had a big day for the defense. He lead the team with two interceptions and also recorded two tackles. In total, the defense allowed 224 rushing yards on 51 attempts and 431 passing yards on 24 completions.

Marshall Football: Herd Adds Birdsong to QB Mix

Marshall's search to find an eventual replacement for star quarterback Rakeem Cato added another member today. While visiting campus during the annual green and white game Michael Birdsong gave a verbal commitment to the Thundering Herd.

Birdsong comes to Marshall from James Madison University. The sophomore quarterback started every game for the Dukes last year, completing 227 of 376 pass attempts for 2,278 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. An occasional rushing threat, he also ran for three scores and 310 yards.

Then a assistant coach at JMU, Marshall defensive line coach J.C. Price recruited Birdsong to the Dukes. A Virginia native, Birdsong decided to leave James Madison after losing the starting quarterback job to Vlad Lee during spring practice.

Birdsong is a sizable quarterback, standing 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. Before committing to Marshall, he also had a official visit scheduled at Old Dominion. Per NCAA transfer rules, Birdsong will sit out the upcoming season. Once eligible, he will have two years left to play.

Marshall Basketball: Dan D'Antoni Named Head Coach

After an exhaustive search that lasted over 40 days, Marshall University finally has a new men’s basketball coach. Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick announced the hire of Los Angeles Lakers assistant Dan D’Antoni earlier today.

Dan is the older brother of Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, who Hamrick heavily pursued during Marshall’s coaching search. Since 2005 Dan has served as an assistant under his younger sibling with the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles. Prior to his time in the NBA, D'Antoni spent 30 years as the head coach at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he won over 500 games.

A Marshall grad and Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, D'Antoni played basketball for the Thundering Herd from 1966 to 1970, leading the team in scoring (17.5 ppg) during his junior season. He was also named 1st Team All Mid-American Conference in 1969. After graduating D'Antoni was appointed head coach of the Herd’s freshman basketball team where he coached his younger brother Mike. One year later Dan was promoted to a assistant coach position with the varsity squad. Following his time on Marshall’s coaching staff, he had a brief stint with the NBA’s Baltimore Bullets before becoming the head coach at Socastee in 1975.

Hamrick will formally introduce D'Antoni during a press conference tomorrow afternoon.

Marshall Basketball: D'Antoni to Remain with Lakers

Despite a full court press from Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick, Mike D'Antoni won't return to the Thundering Herd as head basketball coach. Citing sources, Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail has learned that D'Antoni will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers.

According to McGill, Hamrick offered D'Antoni a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract and spent four days in Los Angeles courting the former Marshall point guard.

D'Antoni has one season remaining on a three year, $12 dollar contract with the Lakers. Los Angeles just finish a 27-55 campaign that landed them in last place of the Pacific Division.

McGill expects Marshall to name a new basketball coach within the next 48 hours or early next week. Names mentioned for the opening include Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood, Eastern Kentucky's Jeff Neubauer, and West Virginia assistant Ron Everhart. Also, multiple outlets reported that North Carolina Central head coach Levelle Moton interviewed for the job.

In slightly related news, fellow Conference USA member Southern Miss lost basketball coach Donnie Tyndall to Tennessee. Reports indicate that Tyndall's contract with the Volunteers is worth $8 million over five years.

Two C-USA schools have already found new men's basketball coaches. In April FAU signed former Detroit Pistons coach Michael Curry to a six year contract. After firing Ben Braun at the seasons conclusion, Rice brought in VCU assistant Mike Rhoades as his replacement.

Marshall Football: Delvin Weems Commits to Herd

Marshall reached down south for another football prospect this evening, securing a verbal commitment from Delvin Weems.

Earlier today the Atlanta Journal-Constitution named Weems one of the top 10 high school running backs in Georgia. Last year he rushed for 1,233 yards and 21 touchdowns at Sandy Creek High School. Weems' Sandy Creek team also featured current Marshall quarterback Cole Garvin.

247 Sports ranks Weems a three star recruit and the nations 15th best all-purpose back. He also had a scholarship offer from Cincinnati.

Marshall Basketball: Canty Wins Appeal, Will Transfer

After having his original transfer request denied, Marshall basketball player Kareem Canty was granted his release by a appeals committee earlier today.

The Thundering Herds leading scorer this season, Canty averaged 16.3 points and 5.5 assist per game. He was named to Conference USA's All-Freshman and All Third teams.

Canty first requested his release shortly after the dismissal of former head coach Tom Herrion. When that request was denied, Canty sought a  hearing by the Student Athlete Appeals Committee to reverse the original decision. Per NCAA rules, appeals committees consist of three parties, the Director of Admissions, the Facualty Athletics representative, and the Chair of the Advisory Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics.

A rising sophomore, Canty spent two years on Marshall's campus. The first as a partial qualifier which allowed him to be placed on scholarship and practice with the team but not participate in games.

Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon is reporting that Canty will likely file a hardship waiver in order to play at his new school immediately. Under normal circumstances, transfers are required to sit out one year.

Marshall Football: Chase Litton Commits to Herd

Marshall added another member to its 2015 recruiting class this afternoon when quarterback Chase Litton announced his commitment to the Thundering Herd. Litton was on campus yesterday for the Herd's first day of spring practice.

As a senior at Florida's Wharton High School, Litton passed for 13 touchdowns and almost 2,220 yards. He also rushed for 397 yards and four additional scores.

Chase Litton highlight videos

A three star prospect according to Rivals, Litton committed to South Florida in the summer between his junior and senior year but withdrew the commitment shortly thereafter. He did not sign a letter of intent in February, deciding instead to attend the Atlanta Sports Academy, a prep school in Georgia. Marshall has a number of Atlanta Sports Academy alumni on it's roster including Corey Tindal, Kent Turene, and Deon-Tay McManus. Litton will spend this fall at prep school and enroll at Marshall in January of 2015.

A athletic quarterback, Litton stands 6-foot-6, 190 pounds. He was recently named a All-Second Team basketball selection in Hillsborough County.

Marshall Football: Herd Opens Spring Practice in the Snow

Marshall kicked off spring football practice yesterday in the snowy confines of Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Including Tuesday, the Thundering Herd will conduct 15 practices culminating with the annual Green and White game on April 26th.

Yesterday's practice marked a significant change for tight end Eric Frohnapfel. It was the first time he did not share the field with twin brother Blake Frohnapfel. After sitting behind all-conference quarterback Rakeem Cato for three years, Blake transferred to Massachusetts in February. Now the lone Frohnapfel on Marshall's roster, Eric is competing against Devon Johnson and newcomer Deon-Tay McManus for the staring tight end spot.

Granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA, defensive tackle James Rouse is enjoying his sixth and final spring practice at Marshall. Rouse lead the Herd with 14 tackles for loss last season and was named the teams defensive MVP. After yesterdays practice Rouse spoke with Derek Redd of the Charleston Daily Mail about his goals this spring.

Despite yesterday's adverse conditions, Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said his team came out with energy and was focused on the task at-hand.

The Herd returns to the practice field on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Practice is open to the public.

  • Blake Brooks slides in at left guard, taking the spot vacated by Johansson's move to tackle.
  • Although he has participated in the team off-season conditioning program, running back Kevin Grooms is not yet an official member of the Herd. Marshall head coach Doc Holliday spoke about Grooms status on HerdZone.com, “Grooms isn’t back as an official member of the team yet,” Holliday said. “He still needs to earn back the trust of his teammates and the coaches before he’s a part of the team again. We’ll decide when that’s going to be.”
  • Marshall has plenty of depth at tight end with Devon Johnson and Eric Frohnapfel returning, but watch out for redshirt freshman DeonTay McManus. The one time WVU commitment was a four star recruit out of Baltimore in 2012.

Marshall Basketball: Potential List of Candidates to Replace Tom Herrion

As Marshall searches for its next men's basketball coach, rumors are already swirling on potential replacements for Tom Herrion. Here are a few names that could make athletic director Mike Hamrick's short list.

Blaine Taylor - Taylor lead Old Dominion's basketball program for almost 19 seasons. During that time the Monarchs won 20 games eleven times and qualified for six NCAA Tournaments. He was fired at the tail end of the 2012-2013 season when ODU had a record of 2-20.

John Pelphrey - A Marshall assistant under Billy Donovan, Pelphrey has served as head coach at South Alabama and most recently Arkansas. In 2008 he lead the Razorbacks to the NCAA Tournament during his first year as head coach. Declining results the next three seasons including two 14 win campaigns contributed to his dismissal in 2011. He is currently an assistant coach at Florida.

Jeff Boals - Although he has never been a head coach, Boals might be an intriguing option. He spent five seasons on Marshall's bench under Greg White. Since then, Boals has served as an assistant coach at Charleston, Robert Morris, Akron, and most recently Ohio State. During his time with the Buckeyes, Ohio State has won three Big Ten regular season titles and appeared in the 2012 Final Four.

Mike D'Antoni - Would the former New York Knicks and current Los Angeles Lakers head coach be interested in returning home to West Virginia and leading his alma mater? According to ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, D'Antoni won't be brought back to the Lakers next year. Keep in mind D'Antoni has never coached in college basketball, even as an assistant. But the real question is, what would it take to bring him back to the Mountain State? D'Antoni has been involved with the athletic department recently, co-chairing Marshall's vision campaign with Chad Pennington.

Dan D'Antoni - Mike's older brother, Dan is a former Marshall point guard and member of the schools athletics Hall of Fame. After a brief stint on the Herd's coaching staff in the early 1970's, Dan spent 30 years as a high school coach in South Carolina. Since 2005, he has served as an assistant coach under Mike at the Phoenix Suns, Knicks, and Lakers.

Jeff Capel III - While Shaka Smart has taken VCU to new heights, you could argue that Capel put them on the map. From 2002-2006, Capel won 79 games and made a NCAA Tournament appearance with the Rams. Capel left for Oklahoma in 2009 and took the Sooners to the Elite Eight in his first season as head coach. He was fired two years later after consecutive sub 15 win seasons. Capel's a assistant coach at Duke.

Bruce Pearl - Now an ESPN analyst, Pearl is best know for his six seasons at Tennessee. During those six years, Pearl never failed to make the NCAA Tournament and never won less than 19 games. He was fired in 2011 amid an NCAA investigation into the recruiting of Aaron Craft. As a result of the investigation, Pearl was hit with a three year show-cause penalty that runs through this August.

Seth Greenberg - Another ESPN analyst, Greenberg coached at Virginia Tech from 2004 to 2012. Often the bridesmaid, the Hokies qualified for five NIT's during Greenberg's tenure and only one NCAA Tournament. That being said, his overall record at Virginia Tech was 167-117. He was also named the 2007-2008 ACC coach of the year.

Steve Henson - Could Hamrick turn to an old friends staff for Marshall's next coach? Hamrick hired Lon Kruger at UNLV in 2004 and was rewarded with four NCAA Tournament appearances. Now the head coach at Oklahoma, Henson is Kruger's top assistant.

John Brannen - A 1997 Marshall graduate, Brannen played two seasons with the Herd after transferring from Morehead State . He's held assistant coaching positions at Charleston, Eastern Kentucky, St. Bonaventure, VCU, and now Alabama. Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant promoted Brannen to associate head coach before the 2013-2014 season.

Bobby Lutz - From 1999 to 2005 few coaches were more successful in Conference USA than Lutz. Before the 49ers departed for the Atlantic 10 in 2006, Lutz won a C-USA title and appeared in four NCAA Tournaments. Fired by Charlotte following the 2010 season, he is now an assistant at NC State.

Jeff Neubauer - After taking Eastern Kentucky to the NCAA Tournament for the second time, Neubauer's name will be bantered about for a number of openings this off-season. A former West Virginia assistant, Neubauer has lead the Colonels for nine seasons, accumulating a record of 167-121.

Kevin Keatts - One year removed from a national championship, Keatts has been a assistant under Rick Pittio at Louisville since 2011. Prior to that, he served as head coach at Hargrave Military Academy for eight seasons. In July of 2013 Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com named Keatts the third most respected/feared assistant in college basketball after surveying over 200 collegiate coaches.

Marshall Basketball: Herrion to Part Ways with Herd

Marshall ended its men's basketball season on Wednesday with a Conference USA Tournament loss to ODU. Less than 48 hours later, it appears Tom Herrion's tenure as head coach is also coming to a end.

At 1:45 p.m. today Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick will hold a press conference to discuss the future of the basketball program. Multiple reports indicate Herrion's dismissal will be announced at the event.

The Herd just completed a 11-22 campaign, only the fourth 20 loss season in Marshall men's basketball history. Over four seasons Herrion compiled a 67-67 record. During that time he was well under .500 in league play, ending his Marshall career with a 28-36 mark against Conference USA competition.

In his first year on the job, Herrion pushed the Herd to 22 wins and a CollegeInsider.com Tournament bid. He followed that up with a NIT appearance in 2012, Marshall's first in 24 years.

Heading into the 2012-2013 season, Marshall was selected to finish second in C-USA and two players were placed on the preseason all conference team. The lofty expectations turned out to be a burden as the Herd finished 13-19.

This off-season Herrion took the dramatic step of dismissing DeAndre Kane from the team. In three seasons at Marshall Kane became the schools 15th all time leading scorer and 8th in all time assist. Now at Iowa State, Kane was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after averaging 17.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assist per game this year.

Attrition was a constant issue with Herrion's Herd. Over the past four years nine players left Marshall's basketball program without completing their eligibility

Discipline was another problem. In a Sports Illustrated report this February Herrion's own players accused their coach of failing to reprimand Kane despite a laundry list of problems including tardiness, physical altercations with teammates, and verbal abuse of staff members.

The Herald Dispatch is reporting that Herrion's contract includes a $525,000 buyout which has been raised through private sources.

We will have more on this story as it develops throughout the day.

Marshall in the NFL: Herd Alums Stay Put

The first shots were fired across the NFL's offseason bow yesterday as free agency got under way. While players across the league were busy switching teams, a number of Marshall alumni singed new contracts with their current clubs.

A special teams standout, linebacker Albert McClellan signed a new two year contract with the Baltimore Ravens. McClellan lead Baltimore with 12 special teams tackles last season while also providing depth at inside and outside linebacker. Although full terms of his deal were not disclosed, the 2006 Conference USA defensive player of the year reportedly received a $400,000 signing bonus.

The Ravens also kept fellow former Marshall standout Omar Brown off the free agent market by tendering him a contract. Brown spent eight weeks on Baltimore's practice squad last year before being promoted to the active roster.

Despite a neck injury that cut his season short, the Indianapolis Colts brought Ahmad Bradshaw back on a one year contract yesterday. In three games last year Bradshaw rushed for 186 yards on 41 attempts with two touchdowns. The Thundering Herds fifth all time leading rusher, Bradshaw will embark on his eighth NFL season in 2014.

Of Marshall's ten alumni to play in the NFL last season, only safety Chris Crocker remains a free agent.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Downs FAU, Advances in C-USA Championships

From Marshall University's Sports Information Office.

EL PASO, Texas – Sophomore guard Chris Thomas (Denver) scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds as No. 14 seed Marshall topped 11th-seeded Florida Atlantic 63-59 in a first round game of the Conference USA tournament Tuesday night.

The Thundering Herd overcame a poor shooting performance (24-of-63 from the field and 5-of-20 from 3-point range) by forcing 15 FAU turnovers and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds.
Marshall took a 36-29 lead into halftime and 3-pointers by Canty and Thomas pushed the Thundering Herd's lead to 11 with 8:32 remaining.
The Owls used a 9-0 run to pull within two, 55-53, with 3:52 to play but would get no closer.

He recruited central Virginia, western North Carolina, and a number of southwestern states for William & Mary.

Barclay replaces Thomas Brown who left Marshall to become the running backs coach at Wisconsin.

Marshall Soccer: Crew Cuts Withrow

Marshall lost its lone Major League Soccer representative yesterday as the Columbus Crew cut goalie Daniel Withrow.

Conference USA's 2012 co-defensive player of the year, Withrow was selected by Columbus in the second round of the MLS supplemental draft last year. Serving as the Crews third goalkeeper in 2013, Withrow appeared in three reserve league matches and played 40 minutes in the teams exhibition game against Wigan Athletic.

Withrow was the third former Marshall soccer player drafted into MLS, joining Jeremy Ashe (Chicago Fire 2006) and Byron Carmichael (Sporting Kansas City 2003).

Marshall Basketball: Late Rally Falls Short as Does Herd

From Marshall University's Sports Information Staff.

NORFOLK, Va. – In its final regular season road game of its 2013-14 campaign, the Marshall men’s basketball team came up short as a result of a lack-luster shooting performance against Conference USA newcomer Old Dominion by a score of 70-63 on Thursday night at Ted Constant Convocation Center.
With the win, the Monarchs now sit at 14-15 overall and 8-6 in league play this season, while the Thundering Herd drops to 9-20 overall and 3-11 versus C-USA foes. The ODU victory breaks a 4-4 tie in the all-time series between the programs prior to tonight’s contest, which served as meeting number nine.
Both sides struggled offensively early on as the opposing defenses kept the clamps tight to limit good shot opportunities and force turnovers. At the eight-minute media timeout with 7:40 until halftime, the Herd and Monarchs were knotted up at 14 points apiece.
Trailing ODU 21-17, Marshall went on a 9-0 run that spanned 2:50, putting the Herd on top, 26-21 with 3:02 remaining until the half.
At the break, the visiting Herd held serve, 27-25, despite having shot 10-of-26 from the field (38.5 percent). Marshall found great success in clogging the passing lanes with high hands on defense, which led to six Monarch turnovers in the first 20 minutes and four steals by the Herd defense.
Out of the 27 first-half points for Marshall, underclassmen Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.) and Chris Thomas (Denver) combined for 21 of those, with Canty having led the way with 13 in his starting role.
The second half opened with the two teams exchanging buckets before the Monarchs went on a 9-1 run after trailing 30-27 to force a timeout from Marshall coach Tom Herrion with 16:21 to play and ODU leading, 36-31.
ODU continued to battle with Marshall as the Monarchs led 46-37 with 11:40 left in the contest, as the Herd looked to make a run as Thomas and a foul-troubled Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) reentered the game.
A bucket from ODU’s Dimitri Batten pushed the lead to 14 at the 7:07 mark, setting the biggest lead of the night for the Monarchs as the scoreboard read 56-42. The ODU lead remained of the double-figure variety as with 3:45 left, the Herd trailed, 59-49.
In the waning moments, Marshall cut the deficit to five with the score at 64-59 and 34.0 seconds remaining on a triple from Canty, but not enough time remained for the Herd to successfully complete a comeback as the clock ran out and the Monarchs collected a 70-63 victory. With the seven point defeat, Marshall has now lost 15 games this year by 10 or fewer points
On the night, Marshall went 20-for-54 (37 percent) from the field and 6-of-15 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. Canty finished with a game-high 24 points in 39 minutes on the floor, while Thomas added 17 of his own, paired with seven rebounds.
The Herd will return home for a pair of home games to close out the regular season, starting with a Sunday contest with East Carolina at 2 p.m. on Mar. 2.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Falls Victim to Middle Tennessee by Three

From Marshall University's Sports Information Office.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With hopes of snapping Middle Tennessee’s eight-game win streak, the Marshall men’s basketball team once again fell victim to the three ball as a trey with 19 seconds remaining broke a tie and lifted the Blue Raiders to a 56-53 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
Conference USA leader Middle Tennessee improves to 21-7 overall and 11-2 in its first season as a C-USA member, while the Thundering Herd now sits at 9-19 on the year and 3-10 in league play. The Blue Raiders now lead the all-time series with the Herd, 5-2.
From the opening tip, both sides remained within striking distance as the lead grew no larger than eight points for the entirety of the 40-minute contest.
A sloppy first half consisted of 21 total turnovers with 11 coming from the Blue Raiders with those mistakes resulting in 12 Marshall points. At the break, Middle Tennessee held serve, 27-25, with freshman forward Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) having shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for eight points in nine first-half minutes.
Down the stretch, the two teams traded buckets until the Herd gained a head of steam as a jumper from freshman guard Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.) helped put his side up by a game-high seven points as the score stood at 47-40 with 7:09 to play.
The lead wouldn’t hold for as long as Marshall coach Tom Herrion would have liked as three-straight triples from Middle Tennessee’s Kerry Hammonds took the Blue Raiders from down 49-42, to up 51-49 with 2:56 remaining in regulation. Canty tied the game at 51 just 65 seconds later, before the visitors retook a two-point lead, 53-51.
Canty would once again deliver a basket to tie it up, this time with 54 seconds left on the game clock.
As the shot clock had mere seconds left, Jawawn Raymond knocked down a tough three with 19 seconds remaining, putting his side up 56-53. After calling a timeout with 13 seconds remaining to draw up a play, the Herd was unsuccessful in running the play, leading to a scramble that resulted in a desperation three-point attempt by Canty with three ticks left that fell short, allowing Middle Tennessee to escape with a 56-53 win.
The Herd will take its final road trip of the regular season when it travels to Norfolk, Va. to take on another C-USA newcomer, Old Dominion, on Thursday (Feb. 27) at 7 p.m.

Marshall Football: Brown Leaving for Wisconsin

According to Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon, Marshall running backs coach Thomas Brown is leaving for the same position at the University of Wisconsin.

Brown joined the Herds coaching staff last offseason after a one year stint as Chattanooga’s running backs coach. For the 2013 season, Marshall ranked 24th nationally with 205.93 rushing yards per game. The Herd’s ground attack was lead by Essray Taliaferro who rumbled for 1,140 rushing yards on 221 attempts and ten touchdowns.

In terms of recruiting, Brown covered Atlanta and Georgia’s northern region. He was responsible for securing three commitments in Marshall’s 2014 recruiting class, wide receiver Emanuel Beal, running back Keion Davis, and  defensive back Antavis Rowe.

Marshall Football: Herd gets Commitment from Miami Central Pair

In the world of college football, recruiting never stops. With signing day barley in the review mirror, Marshall added its first two verbal commitments of 2015.

The Herd tapped a familiar south Florida pipe line for a pair of defenders, Miami Central High School. Three players on Marshall's roster are former Miami Central Rockets, quarterback Rakeem Cato, his favorite receiving target Tommy Shuler, and Virginia Tech transfer Donaldven Manning.

The evenings first commitment came from three star defensive end Fermin Silva. After a junior season in which he made 47 tackles and 15 sacks, Silva was named to the All-Dade Football 6A-8A First Team. The 6-foot-1, 215 pound defender also received scholarship offers from South Florida and Appalachian State. Earlier this month The Miami-Herald named him one of areas top 50 football prospects heading into the summer.

Less than a hour later Marquis Couch made his commitment known via Twitter. An outside linebacker for the Rockets, he recorded 51 tackles and 12 sacks during his junior season. With another year of high school football on the horizon, Couch stands six feet, 210 pounds.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Downs Charlotte on the Road

From Marshall University's Sports Information Office.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After falling behind by 11 points early on, the Marshall men’s basketball team kept fighting to battle back and collect a 59-56 victory over Charlotte in Conference USA play on Saturday night at Halton Arena.
With the road victory, the Thundering Herd improves to 9-17 on the year and 3-8 in C-USA play, with the loss dropping the 49ers to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in league play.
As part of league scheduling, Marshall will see Charlotte once again before the regular season concludes, but in Huntington, as the two sides are “rivals” and travel partners, which is accompanied by a home-and-home series.
Coach Tom Herrion went with the starting five of Shawn Smith (Sacramento), Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.), Chris Thomas (Denver), Cheikh Sane (Dakar, Senegal) and Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) for the third straight game.
At the second media timeout of the game, 10:10 remained until the half and Charlotte led 21-15, while Canty paced the Herd with eight points in just 10 minutes of playing time. The gap widened as the 49ers went up double digits, but 10 straight points from Thomas, including two three-point plays, brought the score to 32-29 with 3:22 left in the half.
With the clock winding down at the end of the first half, Thomas snatched an offensive rebound and banked a layup off the glass to put his side up 36-34 right before the buzzer sounded. The bucket capped a 17-2 run that spanned 7:12 and closed the half for the Herd.
Through the first 20 minutes, 14 points from Thomas and 13 from Canty combined for 27 of Marshall’s 36 first-half points, while Marshall turned eight Charlotte turnovers into 14 points.
The 49ers came out of the locker room re-energized for the second half and jumped back out front, but not for long. Success on the offensive glass allowed the Herd to re-take and extend its lead to a game-high nine points, 50-41, as 12:06 remained.
Charlotte remained cold from the field as the Marshall defense kept its pressure high, allowing the visiting Herd to hold serve, 53-47, with 5:40 to play after a jumper from Canty. Buckets from Canty and Thomas kept a multiple-possession buffer between the two teams as the 49ers looked to trim the margin.
With 1:27 remaining, a dunk from Terrance Williams brought Charlotte within four, but a mid-range jumper from Canty followed, making it 59-53 in favor of the Herd with 53.4 seconds left. Following a Marshall turnover, Shawn Lester knocked down a trey with 19.4 seconds to play, bringing the score to 59-56.
On the ensuing possession, the Herd committed another turnover, this one due to failing to inbound the ball in under five seconds, which gave the ball back to Charlotte with a shot at tying the game. After an initial miss, the 49ers grabbed the rebound to set up another chance at extending the game, but could not connect as the Herd reeled in the miss and ran out the clock to win 59-56.
Marshall finished 40 percent from the field (22-of-55) as Canty finished with a game-high 21 points, followed by 18 from Thomas. Charlotte went 22-for-62 from the field (35.5 percent).
The Herd will return home to the Cam Henderson Center to take on UAB, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.

Marshall Football: W.V. Natives Join Recruiting Class as Preferred Walk-Ons

While West Virginia is not considered a hot bed of football recruiting, the Mountain State has been good to Marshall. In recent years West Virginia natives Aaron Dobson, Clinton Van Horn, Blake Brooks, and Raheem Waiters have made a big impact for the Thundering Herd.

On national signing day a number of local prospects made a commitment to Marshall as preferred walk-ons. Preferred walk-ons are guaranteed a roster spot but are not on scholarship.

One of those West Virginia natives is already on campus. Although he comes to Marshall from Virginia's Fork Union Military Academy, Matthew Santer played high school football in Parkersburg W.V. Santer enrolled at Fork Union last August hoping to raise his recruiting profile. The prep school semester helped as Santer caught the eye of Marshall's coaches. He will join the Herds safeties when spring practice begins.

Beckley's Woodrow Wilson High School should be familiar to Thundering Herd fans. Doug Legursky and Van Horn are just two of many former Flying Eagles to play collegiality at Marshall. Chase Hancock hopes to continue that legacy after accepting a preferred walk-on spot with the Herd. As a senior Hancock caught 35 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns. He also recorded 564 rushing yards on 98 carries and eight touchdowns.

A member of West Virginia's Class AA all first team, defensive lineman Austin Hill will join the Thundering Herd as a preferred walk-on this fall. Hill had a number of scholarship offers from division II schools, but the 6-foot-2, 280 pound lineman always dreamed of playing big time college football.

Rounding out the list is athlete Isaiah Brown. One of the fastest football players in West Virginia, Brown accumulated 1,287 yards of total offense during his senior year at Summers County High School. He will test his speed against C-USA competition this fall as a preferred walk-on at Marshall.

Marshall Basketball: Again, Herd Burned By Last-Second Three

From Marshall University's Sports Information Office.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second time in three days, a three-point basket with seconds remaining proved fatal for the Marshall men’s basketball team, this time against Tulane, 68-65, on Sunday afternoon at Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Green Wave improves to 13-11 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA play, while the Thundering Herd drops to 8-17 on the year and 2-8 versus league foes. The series between the two sides is now tied at eight wins each after 16 meetings with Tulane having won the last three meetings.
Bucking what had become a trend in the previous seven games, Marshall coach Tom Herrion started the same five in consecutive games for the first time since Jan. 11 and 16. The lineup was the same as Friday against Southern Miss, which included Shawn Smith (Sacramento, Calif.), Kareem Canty (Harlem, N.Y.), Chris Thomas (Denver), Cheikh Sane (Dakar, Senegal) and Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis).
Tulane jumped on the Herd early as four three-point buckets put the Green Wave up 16-6, forcing a timeout from coach Herrion with12:20 remaining in the first half. The hot start would continue as another long-range make put the home team up 19-6, capping off a 14-2 run.
Once having settled into the game, Marshall found an offensive rhythm that shrank the deficit to seven as the scoreboard read 22-15 with 8:47 until the half after a layup from Taylor.
The Herd worked to remain within striking distance and was successful in doing so as a pair of free throws from Sane with 3:45 left in the half brought the score to 29-24. With the ball and the clock winding down at the end of the half, DeVince Boykins (Forest City, N.C.) caught a kick-out pass from Canty and knocked it down to make it 33-29 at the half.
Through the first 20 minutes of play, Marshall had a relatively clean slate, committing just two turnovers to five from Tulane. Both sides were efficient from deep as the Herd was 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) and the Green Wave was 6-for-10 (60 percent).
After the halftime break, both sides opened the second half by exchanging buckets with the Herd continuing its comeback effort. A 14-2 Tulane run took the score from 37-34 to 51-36, keeping Marshall at bay with 12:30 to play.
Nine straight points from Thomas helped the Herd work its way back into the game as the Tulane defense did not have an answer for the sophomore guard’s slashing prowess. His scoring spree brought the score to 58-49 as 7:10 remained in the contest.
More members of the Herd followed suit with Thomas to rally on the road as Canty knocked down a three as 3:50 remained, making it a 59-56 deficit. Not long after, Sane turned a steal into points as Canty finished the play with a fast break layup. At the final media timeout, Marshall trailed by just one point, 61-60.
Getting his own rebound after a missed layup, Sane followed with a make to tie the game at 63 with 1:05 to play. The bucket gave the Marshall big man the first double-figure scoring performance of his career.
Freshman guard Jonathan Stark came up big for the Green Wave in the final minute as he made a driving layup with the shot clock winding down to put his side up 65-63 with 41 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Thomas was fouled and sent to the line, making both to tie the game at 65 with 28 seconds on the game clock.
With the shot clock off and Tulane with possession, 24.5 seconds remained in regulation. Junior guard Jay Hook took and made a long three from the top of the key with 1.4 seconds to play and the Green Wave on top 68-65.
With Boykins inbounding, Smith caught the ball just past midcourt and his shot for the tie was no good, allowing Tulane to hold on for a last-second win.
Thomas finished as the game’s leading scorer with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Canty followed with 16 and Sane with 11, setting a career high for the big man. As a team, the Herd shot 44.4 percent from the field (20-of-45) to 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from Tulane.
Marshall will have six days off between contests before taking on C-USA newcomer Charlotte on the road, Saturday (Feb. 15) at 7 p.m.
