Marshall Basketball: Kane Picks Iowa State

First reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, former Marshall University basketball player DeAndre Kane is transferring to Iowa State. As a graduate student Kane will be eligible immediately with one year of eligibility remaining.  

A two time All Conference USA second team selection, Kane averaged 34.1 minutes, 15.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assist per game in three years with the Thundering Herd. This season Kane was Marshall's primary ball handler, averaging 37.1 minutes, 15.1 points, 7 assist, and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Earlier this month it was reported that Kane was headed to his hometown Pittsburgh Panthers but, those reports proved premature. Kane joins an Iowa State program that also added Northern Illinois transfer Abdel Nader in this years recruiting class. 

Marshall announced Kane’s departure in April, he is one of four players, Chris Martin, D.D. Scarver and Jamir Hanner, to leave the basketball program with eligibility remaining this offseason.  

Marshall Roundup: C-USA Basketball Tournament, Grantham & Woodson Head Elsewhere, Baseball Stadium, Dan Staily, and Larry Coyer

1) Nashville would like to permanently host the SEC basketball tournament but, with 2017, 2018, and 2020 about to be awarded to other city’s an opening might exist for Conference USA. In February C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky expressed interest in hosting his conferences basketball tournament at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena during years where the SEC is elsewhere.

2) Marshall’s basketball program lost out on two recruits this week. First, West Virginia high school basketball player of the year Donte’ Grantham decided to attend prep school at Hargrave Military Academy. The 6-foot-8 forward had scholarship offers from the Thundering Herd and WVU. Marshall alum A.W. Hamilton coaches Hargrave’s post graduate basketball team.

Yesterday Huntington Prep forward Dominic Woodson announced his decision to attend Memphis, shunning scholarship offers from Marshall and many other suitors. Woodson had previously signed a letter of intent with Baylor but was released from his commitment last week.

3) In a article by HerdZone.com columnist Jack Bogaczyk Huntington Mayor Steve Williams declared “We will have a ballpark built before I leave office, by any means we can,”. Mayor Williams, a former Thundering Herd football player, envisions a public/private partnership with Marshall and a developer that will bring a new baseball stadium and minor league team to Huntington. William’s preferred location for the project is the Flint Pigments and ACF property located behind Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Third Avenue.

4) In other baseball related news, Oakland A’s starting pitcher and former Marshall hurler Dan Straily has posted back-to-back quality stars after a few rough outings earlier in the season. Pitching 13 innings against the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants, Straily only surrendered one run while striking out 6 batters against just one walk. Straily picked up wins in both games, for the season he has a 3-2 record and 5.08 ERA.

5) Moving to football, Marshall alum Larry Coyer has been hired by the Washington Redskins as a advance scout. Prior to his new position Coyer served as defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2011 and defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 2003-2006.

Marshall head basketball coach Tom Herrion has released a official statement on Jamir Hanner's departure.

"As we continue to mold our roster to assure a very successful future and foundation for Marshall basketball roster changes are inevitable. Jamir Hanner has decided to leave our program at this time to explore other opportunities. Our newcomers along with our returning pieces position us for a positive 13-14 campaign. As a staff we are very pleased with our recent roster additions as well as the possibility of future members of our team."

According to SNYtv.com, Marshall University basketball player Jamir Hanner is transferring to Buffalo.

Last season Hanner averaged 9.2 minutes, 3.6 points, and 2.5 blocks per game. His minutes drastically fell during conference play as the 6-foot-8 sophomore did not appear in seven of the Thundering Herds 17 Conference USA games. When the Herd played at Houston in March Hanner was left in Huntington.  

Hanner joins three other players, DeAndre Kane, Chris Martin, and D.D. Scarver, that have left Marshall’s basketball program with eligibility remaining since the season ended.

Marshall Football: Start Times Announced & Updated 2013 Football Schedule

Yesterday afternoon Marshall announced the start times for football home games against Gardner-Webb, UTSA, and UAB.

The Thundering Herd will host UTSA on October 5^th and UAB November 9^th. Both games have been set for 2 p.m. Gardner-Webb travels to Joan C. Edwards Stadium September 7^th with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Weekend Round Up: Softball Exits NCAA’s, Kerns Plays Final Round, Baseball Misses Tournament, Brantley Picks Herd, & Kane not Pitt Bound

1) Marshall was eliminated from the NCAA Softball Tournament Saturday night after a 3-2, 13 inning loss to Virginia Tech. Earlier in the day the Thundering Herd knocked Notre Dame out of the double elimination regional with a 3-1 win over the Fighting Irish. Marshall picked up its first loss on Friday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Kentucky.

2) Senior men’s golfer Nathan Kerns wrapped up his impressive Marshall career at the NCAA Columbus Regional on Saturday. Kerns finished the tournament tied for 22^nd place with a three day score of 221 (+8).

3) When Sunday rolled around Marshall baseball needed to beat Rice and receive a little bit of help from Tulane in order to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament. Neither happen as the Owls completed a three game sweep of the Herd with a 6-0 win and UAB took down the Green Wave 6-3. Marshall has not qualified for the conference tournament since 2010.

4) One of the top ranked point guard prospects in the class of 2013, Notre Dame Prep’s Jaylen Brantley signed a letter of intent with Marshall over the weekend. A four star recruit according to MaxPreps.com, Brantley also had scholarship offers from Georgetown, Florida, and Virginia.

5) Earlier this month it was reported that former Marshall basketball player DeAndre Kane was transferring to Pittsburgh. Those plans appear to be on hold as Kane did not commit to the Panthers during a weekend visit. Reports indicate that Memphis is now in hot pursuit of Kane’s services.  

Marshall Basketball: Top Prospect Brantley Signs with Herd

Marshall University has added another member to its 2013 basketball recruiting class, Notre Dame Prep point guard Jaylen Brantley.

Standing 5-feet-10, 160 pounds, Brantley averaged 16 points and five assist per game during his senior season while shooting 44 percent from three-point range.

A four star recruit according to MaxPreps.com, he was also ranked as the 74th best prospect in the class of 2013 by HoopScoop.

Brantley had scholarship offers from major basketball programs including Georgetown, Florida, Virginia, and  Missouri but, his academics are a concern. It is possible he will sit out next season in order to gain eligibility.

Random Musings: New Basketball Travel Partner, Kambola in China, Kerns at NCAA’s, Softball Regional’s

1) From Doug Smock of the Charleston Gazette, Marshall’s travel partner for men’s and women’s basketball has switched from ODU to UNC Charlotte. The 49ers will be the Thundering Herds only home and home opponent next season. Marshall will play every other Conference USA member once.

2) Next month C-USA’s board of directors is likely to approve a 16 team basketball tournament that will include every school in the league. With all 16 teams participating the basketball championships will be played over five days. For those of you familiar with the Big East tournament, C-USA will follow a similar format with the top four teams receiving a double bye into the quarterfinals.

3) Speaking of basketball, Marshall’s J.P. Kambola has joined Kentucky based ministry group Sports Reach for an 18-day tour of China.
