Marshall Basketball: Herd suffers first lost of season, Ohio 70 MU 68

With his team down two points as the clock clicked towards zero DeAndre Kane's jumper clanked off the rim, sealing a 70-68 Ohio victory and Marshall's first loss of the season. Marshall trailed by nine at the half and used a 13 to three run in the final six minutes to set up Kane's game winning attempt.

The Herd struggled mightily on defense all night, allowing Ohio to shot 50% from the floor. Beyond poor defense Marshall only out rebounded the Bobcats by one (36-35) and committed 13 turnovers, six by Kane. Marshall also left a ton of points on the free throw line, barley shooting over 50% (21-38).

In a Jekyll and Hyde night Kane lead MU with 17 points. Three other Herd players, Dennis Tinnon (12), Robert Goff (11), and Damier Pitts (10), all scored in double digits. Tinnon secured a double double with 14 rebounds while Pitts chipped in seven assist.

Marshall Football: Bowl Watch

I found an interesting article on al.com breaking down potential matchups in Birmingham Alabama’s BBVA Compass Bowl. In today’s Charleston Daily Mail Jack Bogaczyk speculated that the BBVA Compass and Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl (St. Petersburg Florida) are Marshall’s two most likely destinations when the Bowl dust settles.

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw sat out his forth straight game while recovering from a foot injury. The Giants lost to New Orleans 49-24.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman registered two special teams tackles during San Francisco’s 16-6 loss to Baltimore.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Playing the rival Cleveland Browns, Chris Crocker recorded two tackles in a 23-20 Bengals victory.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Doug Legursky started a left guard during Pittsburgh’s 13-9 win over Kansas City.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

Marshall Football: Blake Frohnapfel has shoulder surgery

Per Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail:

Marshall officials have confirmed that true freshman quarterback Blake Frohnapfel had a scheduled arthroscopic procedure on his right shoulder Monday morning, but his status for the Herd’s bowl game and beyond is not yet known.
