Albert McClellan & Darius Marshall NFL Combine Update
Albert McClellan and Darius Marshall participated in the NFL Combine last week.
McClellan worked out with the defensive lineman although, he projects as a outside linebacker ( 3 – 4 defense) in the NFL. He recorded one of the best vertical jumps for a defensive lineman, reaching 36.5 inches. McClellan also ran a 40 yard dash time of 4.7 seconds and recorded 26 bench press reps. If you compare those numbers to linebackers instead of defensive lineman McClellan would have had the 8th highest amount of bench press reps and 9th best 40 yard dash time.
Marshall struggled at the combine, barley breaking 4.7 seconds in the 40 yard dash and only recording 14 bench press reps. Draftinsider.net had this to say about Marshalls performance: “Marshall lacked balance, marginal quickness, and was not fast.” http://www.draftinsider.net/blog/?p=1012

Hiram Moore to Prison

Marshall offers Vance and Vernard Roberts
Marshall University is the first football program to offer scholarships to brothers Vance and Vernard Roberts (Dunbar HS, Washington D.C). The brothers have made a pact to attend college together and Doc Holliday was the first to offer both.
Vance is one of the best corners in D.C heading into the 2011 season. A few weeks ago he attend the New Jersey Premier Showcase, an invite-only event for top juniors and select underclassmen in the mid Atlantic region. Sports Illustrated’s Kristian Dye was covering the event and had this to say about Vance:
Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. has a tradition of sending impact players to the college level, and it appears that Vance Roberts is prepared to continue that tradition.
A compact 5-8 defensive back, Roberts may have been the most physical of all the defenders in one-on-one drills, drawing the ire of several receivers for his aggressive play. Roberts used his hands as well as any defensive back at the Premier Showcase and showed good footwork in recovery and anticipation. Having already received an offer from Syracuse two weeks ago, Roberts is anticipating an offer coming in from Maryland when he visits College Park this Tuesday. A third offer could well be coming in on Feb. 27 during a visit to Wake Forest, another program talking with him regularly.
With Roberts, it all comes down to making his presence known on the field. It's not enough to be seen -- Roberts stands out with long dreadlocks and prominent tattoos on his biceps -- he also engages in plenty of talking and mixes it up on the field with the best of them, no matter the size.
"I think a wide receiver can smell fear, and I don't want them to smell that on me," the diminutive Roberts said. "If you mix it up, you take it to them. You don't want to sit back, you want to jam them early."

Vernard is a 5’11, 174 pound running back who already holds a scholarship offer from BCS member Kansas. During his junior season Vernard rushed for over 1,200 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Open letter to WV Senator Robert Plymale
Last week Chuck Landon wrote an article about West Virginia Senate Bill number 588 which was sponsored by WV senator Bob Plymale. West Virginia Senate Bill number 588 would take the authority given to each state University’s board of governors and return it to the the Higher Education Policy Commission. Landon surmised that Plymale sponsored the bill because he was left out of Marshall's athletic director search. In response to the article I thought it would be important to see what Plymale's motivation was for sponsoring the Bill. In regards to that I emailed him a interview request last week. As you might imagine I have not heard back from senator Plymale but you can read what I wrote him below:

In the article Mr. Landon states that you sponsored bill 588 because of hard feelings dating back to Marshall’s search for a new athletic director. I would like to offer you a chance to respond to Mr. Landon’s column in a public forum.
I run a Marshall sports website called the Marshall Thundering Blog (http://marshallthunderingblog.blogspot.com/). The Thundering Blog pulls Marshall athletic news into one place, it is not a forum for my personal opinion. What I am proposing is a open letter from you to Marshall’s constituents about the accusations levied in Mr. Landon’s column. As a concerned Marshall fan I would like to know your motivation for sponsoring the bill, I know many others feel the same way. I think an open letter would be the best way to get your true intent to the people. If you did decided to go with my proposal I would publish your letter and not edit it in any fashion. I think the Marshall Thundering Blog is a great avenue for your response to Mr. Landon because it is free, you can control the message, and it will reach a wide audience.
