Per Rivals, Marshall football commitment A.J Legget is taking an official visit to Tennessee this weekend. Ranked among the top cornerback prospects of this years class, Legget verbally committed to the Herd in mid-January.

Marshall Football: Powell & Hall to visit Herd this weekend

Per Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail, Jeremi Powell and Chris Hall are the only football players taking official visits to Marshall on the last weekend before national signing day.

Powell, a Florida commitment, is a 6’2, 200 lbs linebacker from Pinellas Park High School (FL). Rated a four star recruit by Rivals, eligibility issues could push Powell away from the Gators and into Marshall’s arms.

Hall, from Virginia’s Fork Union Military Academy is the other visitor. Last week the Richmond Times Dispatch reported that the prep school tight end was expected to be part of Marshall’s 2012 recruiting class.

I have not seen the official press release but, per the Twitter account of Charleston Daily Mail reporter Chuck McGill, Marshall freshman guard Justin Coleman has been dismissed from the basketball team. According to McGill the official statement from Marshall indicates that Coleman was removed “for conduct detrimental to the program and not upholding its standards and expectations."

Coleman endured a three game suspension earlier this month for using a cell phone on the bench during Marshall’s December 29th loss at Belmont. Since rejoining the team Coleman has played in five games, averaging 11.2 minutes, and 3.8 points per game.

Wednesday night featured five basketball games between Conference USA members. In notable action Southern Miss continued it’s hot steak, beating ECU 72-60 and UCF lost it’s grip on the leagues top stop, falling at Tulsa 66-61.

Marshall Basketball: The McGill Matrix

I wanted to point out an interesting statistic Charleston Daily Mail reporter Chuck McGill dug up in his Marshall-UAB preview from Wednesday. McGill noted that when MU shoots above 42.5% and wins the rebounding battle they also win the game. This has held true for all of the Thundering Herd’s victories this season. Marshall has lost every game when those two criteria are not met.

These parameters, which I have dubbed “The McGill Matrix” held true last night, Marshall shot well below 42.5% and tied UAB on the boards, resulting in a 56-49 loss.

As the season progresses we will keep an eye on the McGill Matrix and how it defines Marshall’s wins and losses.

Vinny Curry at the Senior Bowl: Wednesday Report

In the North’s squads last day in pads before Saturday’s game Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry had a dominate Senior Bowl practice, drawing the attention of national media and NFL scouts.

Tony Pauline of SI.com described Curry as “unstoppable” during the North’s teams practice. Pauline also noted that scouts have been impressed by Curry’s athleticism, quickness and general feel as a pass rusher.

Packers.com writer Vic Ketchman wrote an article on Curry, calling him the star of Wednesday’s practice and exploring the college defensive ends potential to play outside linebacker in the NFL.

This will probably be our last report before the Senior Bowl this Saturday, players will be game planning Thursday and Friday without dawning pads. We will keep a look out for any additional news on Curry and post it when appropriate.

Marshall Football: Marcus Gilchrest switches commitment from FIU to Herd

The Marshall Thundering Blog has confirmed that Port Charlotte High School (FL) defensive end Marcus Gilchrist has switched his verbal commitment from FIU to the Thundering Herd. Gilchrist committed to the Golden Panthers in December but, took an official visit to Marshall two weeks ago, re-opening his recruitment.

Rated a three star prospect by Rivals, Gilchrist weighs in at 6’4, 240 lbs. One of Gilchrist’s Port Charlotte teammates, offensive lineman Zach Hall, committed to Marshall back in November.

Marshall Basketball: UAB’s Swing to miss tonight’s game

UAB’s second leading scorer Jordan Swing will miss tonight’s game at the Cam Henderson Center with a broken right hand. Swing averages 11 points per game and equaled his season average in the Blazers 61-59 loss to Marshall two weeks ago.

Vinny Curry at the Senior Bowl: Tuesday Report

After an impressive first practice to start his Senior Bowl week Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry struggled a little bit on Tuesday.

Tony Pauline of Sports Illustrated and SBNations’s Alfie Crow noted that Iowa State offensive lineman got the better of Curry during team drills.

Two other Senior Bowl observers, New York Times writer Jene Bramel and NEPatriotsDraft.com’s Mike Loyko were both complimentary of Curry, pointing out his impressive body lean and burst off the edge.

Vinny Curry at the Senior Bowl: Monday Report

Marshal defensive end Vinny Curry had an ominous start to his Senior Bowl week but ended up impressing scouts when practice began.

The first step in every players journey at the Senior Bowl starts with a scale, each prospect gets weighed and measured wearing nothing but their skivvies. Rob Rang of CBSsports.com reported that Curry looked soft during his weigh-in, not the way to begin an important week.

When Curry’s North squad hit the practice field things began to turn around for the New Jersey native. SI.com reporter Tony Pauline noted that Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adam’s only defense against Conference USA’s defensive player of the year was holding. Curry garnered enough attention on day one for Tommy Hick’s to write a feature about him on Al.com, read it here.

Marshall Football: Herd picks up two coaches from UT-Martin

Per Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch, Marshall University head football coach Doc Holliday has filled two vacancies on his coaching staff.

Landon is reporting that UT-Martin defensive coordinator Lytrel Pollard will be the Thundering Herd’s new secondary coach, focusing on cornerbacks while Todd Hartley continues to work with safeties.

Also from UT-Martin, Geep Wade is expected to be named tight ends coach, he will also be leading the offensive tackles while current offensive line coach Bill Legg handles guards and centers.

Marshall Football: Navy joins BE, could effect home & home with Herd

Yesterday it was announced that Navy would join the Big East conference as a football only member staring in 2015. Now, Thundering Herd fans might not think that is big news in Huntington but, the Midshipman’s new conference affiliation could effect their home and home football series against Marshall scheduled for 2016 and 2018.

Think about it this way, as a member of the Big East Navy will only need four out of conference games per season. Two of those games will be eaten up by Army and Air Force, no way those schools stop playing each other. You also have to figure that the Naval Academy will be very interested in continuing their long standing rivalry with Notre Dame. Theoretically, with three games already booked for long standing rivalries Navy only needs one unique out of conference game each year, possibly squeezing out Marshall.

Now, I am not saying the series is dead but, it will be something to keep an eye on going forward.

Marshall University defensive end Vinny Curry is spending this week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama. The Senior Bowl showcases the best NFL Draft prospects of those players who have completed their eligibility. Curry has been assigned to the North squad which is being lead by Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier and his staff.

For NFL scouts, practices leading up to the Senior Bowl far outweigh the games significance. In fact, most will have already left Mobile before Saturday’s game. During the week we will be posting updates on Curry’s Senior Bowl practice performance, stay tuned for more!

Marshall Basketball: Herd hang on in Lunadri’s NCAA bracket

Marshall Football: Former Va Tech commitment Chris Hall headed to Herd

Per an article from the Richmond Times Dispatch, former Virginia Tech commitment Chris Hall will be part of Marshall's 2012 recruiting class. Hall accepted a scholarship to VT last year but, he did not qualify academically and headed to Fork Union Military Academy for a post-graduate year.

As a senior at Virginia's Dinwiddie high school Hall played quarterback, throwing for 2,068 yards and 18 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. A dual threat, Hall also rushed for 1,056 yards and 11 TD's.

Weighing in at 6'5, 230 lbs, Hall lined up at tight end for Fork Union this season, he is expected to play the same position in college.

Marshall Basketball: Tail of the tape MU vs. USM

Marshall (13-5,4-0) visits Southern Mississippi (16-3,3-1) on Saturday in a battle of two teams at the top of Conference USA’s basketball standings. The Thundering Herd will be fighting to stay undefeated in league play while Southern Mississippi looks to build off a 59-55 victory over UAB Wednesday night.

Using the incredible website statsheet.com, lets take a look at the two squads biggest statistical differences.

1) FT Percentage

Southern Mississippi ranks 21st in the NCAA, shooting 74.9 percent from the free throw line. Marshall is much worse, the Herd is only converting free throws at 60.4%.

2) 3pt FG Percentage

The Golden Eagles are also a much better three point shooting team, USM ranks 67th in the nation at 37.4%. Marshall’s 3-point shooters have struggled all season, hitting 30.3% of their opportunities.

3) 2pt FG Percentage

Marshall converts a higher rate of two point field goal attempts than Southern Mississippi, coming it at 57% compared to the Golden Eagles 48.5%.

4) Rebounds Per Game

Both teams are strong on the glass, ranking in the nations top 100 for rebounds per game. Marshall does hold a statistical edge, bring in 42 rebounds per game compared to USM’s 37.5.

5) Turnovers Per Game

Southern Mississippi does a better job protecting the ball than Marshall, they only average 11.9 turnovers per game, MU gives the ball away 13.9 times per game.

6) Defensive Floor Percentage (The percentage of a team's possessions on which at least one point is scored ).

Marshall is allowing its opponents to score at least one point on 50.9% of their offensive possessions. Southern Mississippi does a better job defending, it’s opponents only score on 46.3% of their offensive possessions.

7) Defensive 3pt FG Percentage

Marshall is a better defensive team beyond the arch, allowing teams to convert 30.1% of their 3-point attempts. Southern Mississippi struggles a little bit in that area, allowing the opposition to hit 34.6% of their 3-point shots.

8) Defensive 2pt FG Percentage

This is an area that Marshall really struggles with, the Thundering Herd allows opposing teams to score on 60.9% of their 2 point attempts, good for 338th in the nation. The Golden Eagles are much better, limiting opponents to 52.7% of two point attempts made.

This should be a pretty close game, both teams rebound well and have different strengths on either side of the ball. Southern Mississippi is a better shooting team but, Marshall’s strong 3-point defense might pose problems for the Golden Eagles. Marshall will have to do a better job limiting USM’s two point field goal percentage. The key in doing so will be stopping senior forward Maurice Bolden who averages 11.1 points per game, mostly in the paint.

Whispers of Donald Brown’s return to Marshall University's football team can be confirmed. In yesterdays live chat, Charleston Daily Mail reporter Chuck McGill mentioned that Brown will compete for a starting spot at safety this spring.

Brown was dismissed from MU’s football team in July of 2011 after being arrested for a domestic violence incident involving his wife and then 11-month old daughter. The charges were later dropped and Brown spent last season away from football.

As a sophomore in 2010 the Florida native recorded 75 tackles and three interceptions. Brown played right away as a true freshman and did not use a redshirt, he should have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

West Virginia University used a dominate second half to defeat Marshall 78-62 in Wednesday nights Capital Classic basketball game. After exiting half time tied at 30 WVU pulled away, out scoring MU 48-32 in the second frame. Marshall was also out rebounded 37-27, the first time that has occurred all season.

Typically a solid defensive team the Herd allowed WVU to shoot over fifty percent from the floor. The Mountaineers were lead by do it all forward Kevin Jones, who scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Darryl Bryant also had an impressive game for WVU, contributing seven rebounds of his own and 22 points.

Only two Marshall players were able to reach double digit points with DeAndre Kane's 19 and Damier Pitts 15. Dennis Tinnon fell just below his season average of 10.9 rebounds, pulling down ten arrant shots, three on offense and seven on defense.

Marshall (13-5, 4-0) returns to action this Saturday at Southern Mississippi (16-3, 3-1), tip off is scheduled for 6pm ET.

Marshall Football: A.J Leggett commits to Herd

A.J Leggett, one on the nations top high school defensive backs has verbally committed to Marshall University. Rivals.com ranks Leggett as the 10th best cornerback prospects for 2012 and a four star recruit. Leggett chose Marshall over offers from major programs including Alabama, LSU, FSU, Florida, Miami and many more.

Leggett’s high school career has included four different football programs, starting at South Miami while making pit stops at Booker T. Washington, Gulliver Prep and Homestead, only to end up back at South Miami for his senior season. According to Rivals, Leggett boast a qualifying score of 22 on his ACT but, eligibility still might be a challenge considering the number of schools he attended. Leggett’s recruiting process has also been a whirlwind, last year he committed and de-committed from Florida State and Miami.

Gary Thompson, a 6’3, 202 lbs linebacker from Helix Charter High School (CA) committed to Marshall University during his official visit on campus this weekend. As a high school senior Thompson played defensive end, recording 14 sacks, 55 total tackles with 18 for loss, 23 hurries and three forced fumbles.

Thompson plays fast on and off the football field, he anchors Helix’s 4 x 100 track team and has also recorded a 10.8 second time in the 100 meter dash. With his speed Thompson is projected to play linebacker at Marshall.

A lot of people have been searching for Marshall’s 2012 football schedule. Currently, we only have dates for the Herd’s four out of conference games. We know which Conference USA opponents Marshall will be play and where but, dates are still unknown.

Any way here is a extremely tentative 2012 Marshall University football schedule:

September 22nd – Open date / Possible C-USA opener?

2) According to the Twitter account of Charleston Gazette reporter Doug Smock (@dougsmock), Stefone Grace has joined Marshall’s football team and should participate in spring practice. Grace, a 6’3, 200 lbs linebacker from the Milford Academy, was part of Marshall’s 2011 recruiting class and enrolled last January. He has used the past year to get his academic house in order.

Per Rick McCann’s article in today’s Herald Dispatch, Townson transfer Kelvin Amayo was set to enroll at Marshall University yesterday. McCann did not confirm Amayo’s enrolment but, it looks like the 6’5, 210 lbs guard is Marshall bound.

If Amayo enrolled yesterday the earliest he would become eligible to play basketball is January of 2013.

Billy Rone, a 6’4, 290 lbs, offensive lineman from Glendale Community College (AZ) has committed to Marshall University. A three star prospect according to Rivals, Rone was named a All-ACCAC second team selection in 2011. Rone took an official visit to Marshall during the East Carolina game on November 26th and also held scholarship offers from Indiana, Mississippi State, East Carolina, and Akron.

Unlike fellow junior college recruits Gage Niemeyer and Ken Smith, Rone will not enroll at Marshall this week. Expect to see him in a Thundering Herd uniform this August for preseason practice.

I wanted to point out three players McGill listed as no longer enrolled at MU, they are:

It might not have been pretty but, Marshall defeated Rice 63-61 Saturday night for it's first road Conference USA win of the season.

With eleven seconds left on the clock and the score knotted at 61, MU point guard Damier Pitts committed a turn over, recovered by Rice's Arsalan Kazemi. With Rice in the double bonus Kazemi was immediately fouled and sent to the line for two shots. A career 67.3% free throw shooter Kazemi missed both attempts, his second shot recovered by Thundering Herd senior Shaquille Johnson. Johnson streaked down the court and made a layup with two seconds remaining, putting Marshall up 63-61. Rice threw up a desperation three point attempt as the clock expired but it was off target.

Marshall was lead by Pitt's 18 points, while Dennis Tinnon recorded his second double-double in a row, scoring ten points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane had a quite game in the points department (seven) but, he lead all players with six assist.

Marshall had a difficult time sticking with Rice defenders all night, allowing the Owls to shoot 45.1% from the field although, they only converted four of 17 three point attempts. Continuing it's season long dominance on the boards, MU out rebounded it's opponent 45-27.

The Thundering Herd (11-4, 2-0) returns to action at UAB (5-8, 0-0) this Wednesday, tip off is scheduled for 8pm ET.

Marshall Basketball: Justin Coleman re-joins the Herd

Per a tweet by WSAZ sports caster Keith Morehouse, Justin Coleman has rejoined Marshall's basketball team and is travailing with the Thundering Herd to Houston for Saturday's game against Rice.

Coleman was suspended indefinitely after using a cell phone on the bench during Marshall's 79-74 road loss at Belmont on December 29th. Prior to his suspension Coleman was averaging 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Coleman released this statement through the Marshall sports information office upon re-joining the team:

“I would like to offer my sincere apology to my family, teammates, coaches, our great fans and especially to coach Herrion for my poor decisions,” Coleman said. “I regret any unnecessary attention this has caused our school and basketball program. I am very thankful to rejoin my teammates and look to learn from my mistakes as I move forward.”

Deyonte Henderson, a 6'2, 210 lbs linebacker from Oak Ridge High School (FL) has commited to Marshall University. Matt Porter of the Palm Beach Post brings us up to date on former Marshall quarterback Eddie Sullivan’s decision to attend a junior college next year:

Eddie Sullivan is on the move again.

After a promising 2010 season at Marshall, the former Boca Raton quarterback was passed up on the depth chart. He left the Herd in mid-November and confirmed last week to the Post he was heading to a junior college. He did not know which school he would attend.

Marshall snapped a two game losing streak Wednesday night, defeating UTEP 76-60 at home during both schools Conference USA opener.

The Herd was lead by junior forward Dennis Tinnon, who scored 15 points and grabbed ten rebounds for his seventh double-double in 14 games. Marshall also received double digit point efforts from Shaquille Johnson (12), DeAndre Kane (10), and Nigel Spikes (10)

Down 22-13 midway through he first quarter Marshall freshman Jamir Hanner provided a spark, scoring six points and grabbing one offensive rebound to put MU up 28-26 at the four minute mark. Hanner had his most impressive game in a Marshall uniform, scoring eight points and grabbing six rebounds.

Marshall used 16 offensive rebounds to hold a 42-23 advantage over UTEP on the boards. The Herd bench also dominated the Miners, scoring 29 points to the visitors nine.

Marshall (10-4,1-0) returns to action Saturday night at Rice (9-4, 0-0). Tip off is scheduled for 8pm ET.

Marshall Football: Herd losses Levern Jacobs to Maryland

Levern Jacobs was surprised when Maryland Coach Randy Edsall offered a scholarship during a Wednesday afternoon meeting.

But the former Suitland standout wide receiver knew his answer.

“I thought they would wait til next week or something, but hey, it all starts with a scholarship,” said Jacobs, a one-time Marshall recruit who played this past season at Milford Academy in New Berlin, N.Y. “They surprised me. I’m happy. I wanted to go there already.”

Maryland had made preliminary inquiries about Jacobs at Suitland, but he said that when former assistant coach James Franklin left to become the head coach at Vanderbilt, the Terps stopped recruiting him.

Jacobs, who is 6 feet and 170 pounds, eventually committed to Marshall, but the Thundering Herd wanted him to defer his enrollment, so he went to Milford.

Marshall football: Jamar Lewter chooses JUCO over Herd

According to various sources Fork Union Military Academy offensive tackle Jamar Lewter will attend junior college instead of Marshall University next year. Lewter was originally part of Marshall’s 2011 recruiting class but, poor grades kept him from qualifying. Left with the choice of propping at Marshall or attending prep school for a year Lewter decided to enroll at Fork Union. Lewter re-affirmed his commitment to the Thundering Herd this fall but, Rivals.com no longer list him as one of Marshall’s incoming recruits.

Marshall Football: Eddie Sullivan plans to attend JUCO

Per a tweet by Palm Beach Post sports writer Matt Porter, former Marshall quarterback Eddie Sullivan is transferring to a junior college. By playing at the JUCO level next season Sullivan will be able to transfer back into FBS football after one year.

As a true freshman Sullivan was Brian Anderson’s primary backup in 2010, completing six passes on 24 attempts for 134 yards and one touchdown. After being passed on the depth chart by A.J Graham and Rakeem Cato Sullivan planed to redshirt in 2011. Hoping to retain his redshirt Sullivan quit Marshall’s football team with two weeks left in the regular season after he was promoted to second string quarterback due to A.J Grahams season ending injury.

The New York Giants won the NFC East and secured a playoff spot by beating Dallas 31-14 Sunday night. Ahmad Bradshaw lead all Giants rushers with 57 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. He also caught three passes for 12 yards and hauled in a TD reception.

For the year Bradshaw rushed for 659 yards and nine touchdowns while adding a additional 267 yards through the air on 34 catches with two touchdowns.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman was credited with two tackles during San Francisco’s season capping win over St. Louis, 34-27. San Francisco won the NFC West and has a first round bye in the playoffs.

Spillman recorded 18 tackles during the 2011-2012 season, mostly on special teams.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Despite losing to Baltimore 24-16 the Cincinnati Bengals still qualified for the playoffs. They will meet the Houston Texans this Saturday in a first round match-up. During the Bengals loss to Baltimore Chris Crocker recorded three tackles.

For the year Crocker made a impressive 61 tackles, recorded 3.5 sacks, and forced a fumble. Crocker did not record an interception for the second year in a row.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Doug Legursky sat out Pittsburgh’s week 17 win against Cleveland with a shoulder injury. It is unclear if Legursky will be available for Sunday’s first round playoff game against Denver.

Legursky started at all three interior positions (left guard, center, and right guard) along the offensive line this season. Coming out of training camp he won the battle to start at right guard but injuries along the Steelers offensive line caused Legursky to move around. Legursky was held out of four games this season including week 17 while recovering from toe and shoulder injuries.

5. Byron Leftwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

Byron Leftwich spent the entire year on injured reserve after breaking his non-throwing arm in the preseason.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

Albert McClellan recorded one assisted tackle during Baltimore’s 24-16 win over Cincinnati.

After spending all of last year on the Ravens practice squad McClellan made the 53 man roster out of training camp. Playing mostly special teams McClellan registered 19 tackles. He did start one game (week 12 vs. SF) and was credited with four tackles.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

Lee Smith was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury prior to Buffalo’s week 17 loss to New England.

Smith started his NFL career as a fifth round pick of the Patriots but was cut during training camp. Buffalo picked him up shortly after and placed Smith on the practice squad for three weeks before he made his NFL debut on October 2nd against Cincinnati. Playing mostly special teams until week 13 Smith recorded a few tackles and appeared in Buffalo’s goal line packages. Smith recorded his first NFL receptions on December 4th, catching three passes for 11 yards. For the year Smith caught four passes for 11 yards.

Marshall Basketball: Hassan Whiteside sent to D-League

Marshall's lone alumni on a NBA roster has been assigned to the NBA Developmental League. Second year pro Hassan Whiteside, who has played zero minutes for the Sacramento Kings over five games this season, has been sent to the Reno Big Horns.

Whiteside had a brief appearance with Reno last year, averaging 10.5 minutes, 4.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.1 block shots over 14 games. Since being drafted in the second round of the 2010 draft Whiteside has appeared in one NBA game, only playing two minutes.

Marshall Basketball: Akron pounds listless Herd 67-51

Marshall started 2012 in disappointing fashion, dropping Sunday's home game against Akron 67-51. The Zips played suffocating defense over two quarters, forcing 14 Marshall turnovers while holding MU shooters to 37.9% from the field. Typically a strong defensive team Marshall had trouble containing Akron, allowing 20 second chance points and 40 points in the paint while only causing eight turnovers.

Despite leading Marshall with eleven points senior point guard Damier Pitts had a especially disappointing night, handing out more turnovers (five), than assist (three). Pitts back court mate DeAndre Kane was barely better, dishing out three assist while giving Akron an equal amount of turnovers.

The Herd did have one positive moment, needing only eight points to join Marshall's 1,000 career point club Shaquille Johnson scored eleven, starting in place of suspended freshman Justin Coleman.

Marshall (9-4) starts Conference USA play Wednesday night (8pm) against UTEP (7-7) at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall head basketball coach Tom Herrion has suspended freshman guard Justin Coleman indefinitely for a unspecified violation of team rules. Multiple reports indicate that Coleman was using a cell phone on the bench during Thursday's road loss at Belmont.

Take this with a grain of salt but, FootballScoop.com is reporting that Marshall secondary coach Mike Cassity has accepted the same position at Kentucky. Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch was the first to report on Cassity's possible departure last week. Cassity, a Kentucky graduate, has been the secondaries coach at Marshall for two seasons.

FootballScoop.com has been unreliable in the past but, given Landon's article last week, it looks like Marshall will be looking for a new defensive backs coach.

Marshall Basketball: Bruins down Herd 79-74

Belmont used 17 Marshall turnovers to defeat the Herd 79-74 at home Thursday night. Marshall was lead by DeAndre Kane who scored 25 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Thundering Herd forward Robert Goff also had a big night registering a double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Marshall Football: Daniel Baldridge promoted to 53 man roster

Former Marshall offensive lineman Daniel Baldridge has been promoted to the Jacksonville Jaguars 53 man roster. Baldridge spent four weeks at the end of 2010 on Jacksonville's active roster and has been on the practice squad all of this season. The promotion means that Baldridge will be under contract with the Jaguars when this season ends.

Standing in at 5'11, 175 lbs, Scott also had scholarship offers from many BCS programs including North Carolina, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Scott played a slash role for Orlando Florida's Oak Ridge High School, lining up at quarterback, defensive back, wide receiver, and returner.

Starting at running back for Boyd Anderson High School (FL) Tindal was rated a three star prospect in the class of 2010 by Rivals. Tinal signed a letter of intent to FIU but, failed to qualify and spent this past fall at the Atlanta Sports Academy.

One of Tindal's teammates, linebacker Kent Turene, committed to Marshall last week. It is possible that both Turene and Tindal could enroll this January and be eligible for spring practice.

Marshall Basketball: Herd takes down WVU Tech 99-80

Marshall used a huge 48-28 first half advantage to take down West Virginia Tech 99-80 Wednesday night. Dago Pena paced the Herd with 28 points and Dennis Tinnon recorded another double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds (eight just on offense) and 12 points.

Marshall Football: Former Herd WR featured in OTL Report

Former NFL and Marshall University wide receiver Nate Pool was featured in a report by ESPN’s Outside The Lines. The report centered on the shady dealings of North Carolina Tech head coach and headmaster Tim Newman. A post graduate school, North Carolina Tech’s student body only consist of it’s football team.

The Outside The Lines report found that Newman was falsifying information to lure recruits to his school and found little to no academic work occurred at North Carolina Tech. Pool, a former assistant coach at N.C Tech, spoke out against Newman in the story, leveling allegations of fraud against his former employer.

Weekly review of Marshall University alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

For the first time in a number of weeks Ahmad Bradshaw lead the Giants in rushing, recording 58 yards on ten carries and one touchdown. Bradshaw also caught three passes for 21 yards during New York’s 23-10 loss to Washington.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

C.J Spillman recorded two special teams tackles Monday night as the 49ers beat Pittsburgh 20-3.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Chris Crocker fought off a lingering knee injury and started at safety during Cincinnati’s 20-13 win over St. Louis. During the game Crocker registered three tackles but was also flagged for a roughing the passer penalty.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Starting at center in place of the injured Maurkice Pouncey, Doug Legursky and Pittsburgh’s offensive line struggled all night, allowing Ben Roethlisberger to be sacked three times. Pittsburgh lost at San Francisco on Monday Night Football 20-3.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

With Ray Lewis back in the starting lineup Albert McClellan was relegated to backup and special teams duty, recording two tackles during Baltimore’s 34-14 loss at San Diego.

Lee Smith was carted off the field with an ankle injury during the third quarter of Buffalo’s 30-23 loss to Miami. Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey has already ruled Smith out for next weeks game against Denver.

Marshall Basketball: MU squeaks by Belmont 87-86

With five seconds left on the clock Belmont's Kerron Johnson fouled Marshall's Damier Pitts, sending him and the Herds 87-86 lead to the free throw line. Pitts, one of MU's most reliable free throw shooters, missed both shots, sending Johnson streaking down the court for a game winning layup as time expired. Fortunately for Marshall and Pitts, Johnson's attempt rolled off the rim, leaving the Thundering Herd with a 87-86 victory.

Beyond the win it was an extra special night for two Marshall players. Forward Dennis Tinnon registered a double-double (10 rebounds) while scoring a career high 24 points. DeAndre Kane also established a new career high with 29 points.

Tinnon was not the only Marshall player to record a double-double. Point guard Damier Pitts scored 19 points and lead the team with 11 assist.

Marshall set new season highs in points scored (87) and points allowed (86) Monday evening. The Herd also had it's best night from the three point line, hitting six of 14 shots. As has been the story all season Marshall out rebounded it's opponent, grabbing 39 rebounds to Belmont's 31.

Marshall Football: Kent Turene set to enroll at MU

Per Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch, Kent Turene a 6’3, 230 lbs linebacker from the Atlanta Sports Academy (GA), will enroll at Marshall next semester. As a high school senior in 2010, Scout.com ranked Turene as the nations 18th best linebacker prospect. Turene accepted a scholarship to Georgia but failed to qualify academically and never enrolled. Turene spent this fall at the Atlanta Sports Academy for a post-graduate semester and traveled to Marshall on October 15th for an official visit. According to Landon, Turene still has eligibility issues and is not likely to join the team for spring practice.

Ken Smith, a 6'4, 285 lbs defensive tackle from Blinn Community College (TX) has committed to Marshall University. Despite never playing a down of varsity football Smith drew interest from several division one programs coming out of high school but, he ultimately decided to work on his game at the junior college level. Marshall Basketball: Herd beats down High Point 79-59

Five Marshall players scored in double digits as the Thundering Herd took down High Point 79-59 at home Saturday evening.

For the first time in his collegiate career Justin Coleman lead MU in points with 16. He also grabbed five rebounds and distributed two assist. Junior college transfer Robert Goff registered a double-double with an even ten points and rebounds Beyond Goff and Coelman, DeAndre Kane (14), Damier Pitts (10), and Shaquille Johnson (10), also scored in double digits.

As a team Marshall out rebounded High Point 40 to 28. The Herd also caused 16 turnovers while only giving away the ball six times. Marshall shot 44 percent from the floor but, had trouble beyond the arc again, only hitting eight of 31 attempts.

The Herd (7-2,0-0) will host Belmont (7-4, 2-0) in the Cam Henderson Center Monday night at 7pm. Belmont played at Miami (OH) this evening and suffered a 66-61 defeat.

A number of former Marshall University players and coaches are now leading high school football teams around the country. Here is a short list of MU alumni currently coaching at the high school level and a summary of their 2011 season. If I left any one out please let me know by leaving a comment in this post.

1) George Chaump, Central Dauphin H.S (Harrisburg PA), Marshall head football coach 1986-1989

A long time High School football coach in the Harrisburg Pennsylvania area, George Chaump lead Central Dauphin to a 5-6 record during his first season at the school.

2) John Shannon, Biloxi H.S (Biloxi MS), Marshall offensive coordinator under Mark Snyder

During his second year at Biloxi High School, John Shannon lead the Indians to a 10-3 regular season record. Biloxi’s season ended in a second round playoff loss to Petal High School, 38-27.

3) Chris Hanson, Trinity Christian School (Sharpsburg GA), Marshall punter 1996-1999

Trinity Christian School took it’s lumps this season transitioning from eight to eleven man football, finishing with a 1-8 record. It was former Marshall punter Chris Hanson’s first year leading the program.

4) Luke Salmons, Cabell Midland H.S (Ona WV), Marshall offensive lineman 2001-2003

In his first season as head coach at Cabell Midland High School, Luke Salmons lead the Knights to 8-4 regular season before losing to Bridgeport in the second round of West Virginia’s AAA playoffs. One of Salmons star players, linebacker Ryan Riedel, has accepted a scholarship to play at Marshall next year.
