Withrow Debuts with Crew

After being drafted in the second round of last week’s MLS supplemental draft, former Marshall University goalkeeper Daniel Withrow joined the Columbus Crew in Florida for pre-season training camp.

Yesterday, Withrow made his first appearance in a Crew uniform, replacing fellow backup goalie Matt Lampson in the 56th minute of Columbus’s exhibition match against the Chicago Fire. Entering the game with a 2-0 lead, Whitrow allowed a goal to Chicago midfielder Yazid Atouba in the 89th minute but was able to hold off a late Fire charge and maintain a 2-1 victory.

You can read a full match report on the Columbus Crew’s official website here.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Alumni Dot D-League

At the Marshall Thundering Blog we pride ourselves on following the careers of former Thundering Herd players as they transition from college to professional sports. While Marshall’s closest tie to the NBA is Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, three alumni are active players in the NBA Developmental League.

1) Tirrell Baines, Forward, Erie Bayhawks

Playing his second season in Erie, Tirrell Baines is the Bayhawks leading contributor off the bench. In 24 games the undersized forward is averaging 24.8 minutes, 10.4 points, and 4.7 rebounds per game.

2) Hassan Whiteside, Center, Rio Grande Vipers

Marshall’s latest NBA draft pick, Hassan Whiteside found himself out of the association when he was cut by the Sacramento Kings in July. Attempting to put his once promising career back on track, Whiteside joined the Sioux City Skyforce where he played seven games before being traded to the Rio Grande Vipers. In ten games with the Vipers, the seven footer is averaging 8.5 minutes, 4.8 rebounds, 4.5 points, and 1.9 blocks per game.

3) Tyler Wilkerson, Forward, Austin Toros

After playing with their Summer League team and earning a training camp invite, Tyler Wilkerson was waived by the San Antonio Spurs in October. Since being released Wilkerson has played with the Austin Toros, San Antonio’s D-League affiliate. Starting all 23 games the Kentucky native is averaging 28.3 minutes, 13.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game.

Notes – A one year player with the Thundering Herd after transferring from N.C. State, Johnny Thomas was a member of the Springfield Armor before being cut in early December. Marshall also has a number of alumni playing overseas, we will profile them at a later date.

Marshall Football: Mirabal to be Named Offensive Line Coach

Per the Twitter account of Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon, Alex Mirabal is expected to be named Marshall's next offensive line coach.

A six year assistant at FIU, Mirabal has coached the Golden Panthers offensive line for the past three seasons. He began his coaching career in 1993, working at a number of South Florida high schools before joining the college ranks.

Mirabal previously worked with Thundering Herd offensive coordinator Bill Legg at FIU from 2008 to 2009. Marshall has been looking for a offensive line coach since early January when Geep Wade left for the same position at Middle Tennessee State.

Marshall Football: Anthony Midget to Join Staff

Per Derek Redd of the Charleston Daily Mail, former Georgia State defensive coordinator Anthony Midget will join Marshall’s football staff in a yet to be announced position.

A five year assistant with the Panthers, Midget was elevated to defensive coordinator by head coach Bill Curry prior to last season. When Curry retired in November Midget was not retained by new head coach Trent Miles.

Midget’s role on Marshall’s staff is up in the air. The Herd has an opening at linebackers coach but, rumors have indicated former WVU assistant Steve Dunlap would fill that position. We should have more clarity on Midget’s role when his hiring is officially announced.

Aaron Dobson at the Senior Bowl: Day Four

In the last day of Senior Bowl practice before today’s walk though and Saturday’s game, Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson continued to show what he can provide an NFL franchise.

According to Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports, the Oakland Raiders coaching staff consistently called sideline routes for Dobson, letting him use his height and jumping ability to beat the defense.

You can watch Dobson in the Senior Bowl this Saturday at 4pm ET on the NFL Network.

Aaron Dobson at the Senior Bowl: Day Three

Another day another impressive Senior Bowl practice for Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson.

According to the National Football Post, Dobson looked crisp getting in and out of his breaks and made two catches deep downfield. Over at CBSSports.com, Dane Brugler writes that Dobson’s Senior Bowl performance has vaulted him to second day draft selection.

Also, Dobson was profiled on the Buffalo Bills official website, nothing groundbreaking but, a good read nonetheless.

Marshall Football: Report Names UCF’s Sinclair as Strength Coach

Per the website CoachingSearch.com, UCF assistant Scott Sinclair will be the next Strength and Conditioning coach for Marshall’s football program.

Sinclair has worked at UCF for nine years as an associate director of strength and conditioning,  primarily training the Knight’s football, baseball, and track & field programs. Prior to UCF, Sinclair held a similar position at Georgia Tech. Last May the Rockingham, N.C., native was named a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association.

Marshall has been looking for a new Strength and Condition coach since Joe Miday left for Western Kentucky earlier this month.

Marshall Football: Expanded C-USA Leads to Schedule Change & New Divisions

When Conference USA officially expanded to 14 football playing members next fall, Marshall’s football schedule, along with every other league member needed to be modified.

In December we reported a 2013 football schedule that looked like this:

2013 Marshall Football Schedule
August 31st – Miami (Ohio)
September 7th – Gardner-Webb
September 14th – at Ohio
September 21st – at Virginia Tech
TBA – Southern Miss
TBA – at Louisiana Tech
TBA – UAB
TBA – at Tulane
TBA – North Texas
TBA – at UTEP
TBA – ECU
TBA – at FIU

According to the Twitter account of Charleston Daily Mail reporter Derek Redd, the Thundering Herd’s new lineup of conference opponents will include ECU, USM, UTSA, and UAB at home with road games at FAU, FIU, MTSU, and Tulsa. No dates have been set.

Here is an updated look at Marshall’s 2013 football schedule:

Updated 2013 Marshall Football Schedule
August 31st – Miami (Ohio)
September 7th – Gardner-Webb
September 14th – at Ohio
September 21st – at Virginia Tech
TBA – USM
TBA – at FAU
TBA – UAB
TBA – at FIU
TBA – UTSA
TBA – at MTSU
TBA – ECU
TBA - at Tulsa

Also, Brett McMurphy of ESPN is reporting that C-USA’s division lineup for football in 2013 will look like this:

East
1) Marshall
2) ECU
3) FAU
4) FIU
5) MTSU
6) Southern Miss
7) UAB

West
1) Louisiana Tech
2) North Texas
3) Rice
4) Tulane
5) Tulsa
6) UTEP
7) UTSA

As you can see, modifying Marshall’s schedule was necessary to ensure that the Herd would play all of its east division foes. This was accomplished by removing one game against a cross division opponent.

Aaron Dobson at the Senior Bowl: Day Two

The second day of Senior Bowl practices proved to be just as successful as the first for Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson.

According to Rob Rang of CBS Sports, Dobson made a impressive catch during one on one drills that resulted in a minor injury. After sitting out a few snaps Dobson returned for the North squads scrimmage near the end of practice were he continued to make plays.

Speaking of impressive catches, we have video of Dobson abusing Utah State cornerback Will Davis on a deep completion yesterday.

Marshall Football: Barr Switches Commitment to Cincinnati

Per multiple reports, Saint Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Mark Barr has switched his verbal commitment from Marshall to Cincinnati. Barr took an official visit to Cincinnati this weekend, prompting the change.

Even with Barr’s departure Marshall still has four wide receivers verbally committed as part of this year’s recruiting class, Angelo Jean-Louis, Josh Knight, Justin Hunt, and Deontay McManus.

Marshall Football: Hewitt Commits to Herd

Junior College prospect Neville Hewitt has given a verbal commitment to Marshall University. Recruited by safeties coach Todd Hartley, Hewitt is the fourth defensive back in the Thundering Herds 2013 recruiting class.

A two year player at Georgia Military College, Hewitt registered a team high 65 tackles as a freshman. This year the six-foot-two, 220 pound safety was named a National Junior College Athletic Association All American honorable mention.

A three star prospect according to Rivals.com, Hewitt had scholarship offers from Colorado State and Appalachian State in addition to Marshall. Hewitt also received significant interest from Arkansas where he took an official in December.

When Neville graduates from Georgia Military College this semester, he will have two years of eligibility remaining at Marshall.

Neville first reported his commitment via Twitter. For more on Neville follow the links below.

Marshall Soccer: Withrow Selected by the Columbus Crew

Marshall University goalkeeper Daniel Withrow was selected by the Columbus Crew in the second round of the MLS Supplemental Draft earlier today. Conference USA’s co-defensive player of the year in men’s soccer, Withrow was the 28th overall selection. As a senior the Michigan native started all 17 games, recording 77 saves while setting a school single season record of 9.5 shutouts.

Withrow becomes the third former Thundering Herd player drafted into MLS. Jeremy Ashe was picked 46th overall by the Chicago Fire in 2006 and Byron Carmichael was selected 60th overall by the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City) in 2003.

Withrow will immediately join the Crew in Columbus for training camp which is already underway. According to the Twitter account of Adam Jardy, who covers the Crew for the Columbus Dispatch, Columbus is planning to keep three goalies this season, one of which appears to be Withrow.

The Crew has a established number one goalkeeper in Andy Gruenebaum. The seven year MLS veteran started a team high 33 games last season, leading MLS with 124 saves. Another holdover in net from 2012, Matt Lampson is also on Columbus’s roster.

Aaron Dobson at the Senior Bowl: Day One

Like Vinny Curry last year, Marshall wide receiver Aaron Dobson is the Thundering Herd’s lone representative in this year’s Senior Bowl. Considered the premier post-season college All Star competition, Dobson’s North squad is being coached by the Oakland Raiders staff. The game is not until Saturday but, practice provides players like Dobson the best chance to impress NFL scouts.

This week we will provide daily reports on Dobson’s efforts to improve his draft status.

Day one of Senior Bowl practice started with weigh-ins. Dobson measured an impressive six-foot-two, 203 pounds but his hand size, only 8.5 inches wide, caused concern among some onlookers.

When he had a chance to hit the practice field Dobson was among the most active players. According to the Philadelphia Eagles official website, Dobson showed a knack for beating press coverage. The National Football Post also reports that the South Charleston native used a number of moves to create separation from defenders and he consistently caught the ball away from his body.

The North practices today from 9:30 am to 11am, check back here tomorrow for more analysis on Dobson’s performance.

C-USA: Tulsa Move to Big East Seems Likely

Per Bill Haisten of the Tulsa World, the University of Tulsa's exit from Conference USA to the Big East has moved from a “possibility to a likelihood”.

Initial reports of Tulsa’s unhappiness in C-USA by surfaced last week. If the Golden Hurricanes leave for another league New Mexico State is a strong possibility to serve as there replacement.

Marshall Football: Herd Lands Four in Super Bowl

While most are talking about brothers Jim and John Harabaugh meeting in Super Bowl XLVII, it is far from the biggest story in Huntington. When the final whistle blew during Sunday's NFC and AFC championship games it became apparent that four Marshall alumni will be participating in this years big game.

After taking a year off, Randy Moss returned to football this season with the San Francisco 49ers. One of the most prolific receivers in Marshall and NFL history, Moss finished fourth on San Francisco with 434 receiving yards, catching 28 passes and three touchdowns.

Also representing San Francisco, former Marshall safety C.J Spillman has turned himself into one of the 49ers best special teams players. A Pro Bowl alternate, Spillman finished the year with 10 tackles and a key fumble recovery in the divisional playoff round against the Green Bay Packers.

In Baltimore, linebacker Albert McClellan has moved from practice squad player to solid contributor. Receiving the most playing time in his three year NFL career, McClellan recorded 49 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a sack this season.

Joining McClellan in Baltimore, Omar Brown was signed as a undrafted free agent this offseason. After spending the majority of the year on the Ravens practice squad, the former all C-USA safety was promoted to the 53-man roster before week 15. In the seasons last three games Brown made his presence felt, registering two tackles and a sack.

Marshall's four Super Bowl alumni only ranks behind Miami (7) and Oregon (5).

Marshall Football: Chris Huhn Commits to Herd

During his official visit to campus this weekend, offensive lineman Chris Huhn gave a verbal commitment to Marshall University. Previously part of Western Kentucky's recruiting class, Huhn re-opened his recruitment when former Hilltoppers head coach Willie Taggart left for the same position at South Florida. Huhn first made his commitment public via Twitter.

Sporting tremendous size, the Pickerington Ohio native stands six-foot-six, 290 pounds. Huhn is rated a three star prospect according to Rivals.com. Besides Marshall, he also held scholarship offers from Louisville and many Mid American Conference schools.

Marshall Football: D’Andre Wilson Commits to Herd

Per his Twitter account, football prospect D'Andre "Chocolate" Wilson has given a verbal commitment to Marshall University. Wilson gave a pledge to the Thundering Herd's football staff during his official visit on campus this weekend.

Hailing from South Carolina's Myrtle Beach High School, Rivals.com rates Wilson as a three star prospect. Besides Marshall, he also held scholarship offers from N.C. State, Missouri, and Mississippi. 247Sports.com ranks the five-foot-nine defensive back as the 108th best player at his position.

C-USA: FAU & MTSU Joining Next Year, ODU Eligible for Football Title in 14'

Per multiple reports, Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee State will join Conference USA in July of 2013, a year earlier than expected. With the early addition of FAU and MTSU, C-USA will have 14 football playing members this fall. Both schools are leaving the Sun Belt Conference.

Also, Harry Minium of the Virginia Pilot is reporting that C-USA's athletic directors will vote to make Old Dominion eligible for the leagues 2014 football championship game. As it stands now, ODU will play a full conference scheduled in 2014 but, they are not allowed to compete in any postseason games, including the C-USA championship or a bowl.

Marshall Football: Multiple Official Visits Scheduled this Weekend

Marshall University’s football coaching staff is hosting a number of prospect on official visits this weekend. Here is a rundown of who you can expect in Huntington.

1) Da’Wan Hunte, Defensive Back, Miami Central High School

Hailing from the same high school program that produced Marshall standouts Rakeem Cato and Tommy Shuler, defensive back Da’Wan Hunte is a big time prospect. Hunte committed to N.C. State over the summer but, Tom O’Brien’s departure re-opened his recruitment. At this time Marshall is Hunte’s only official visit before national signing day.

2) D’Andre Wilson, Defensive Back, Myrtle Beach High School

The 22nd best football prospect in the state of South Carolina according to 247Sports.com, D’Andre Wilson joins Hunte as defensive backs visiting the Thundering Herd this weekend. Wilson also has scholarship offers from N.C. State, Missouri, and Mississippi.

3) Mykal Moody, Athlete, Conway High School

Although he played quarterback at South Carolina’s Conway High School, major college programs are recruiting Mykal Moody as a wide receiver or defensive back at the next level. Moody also has scholarship offers from two SEC programs, Kentucky and Mississippi.

4) Akeem Jones, Quarterback, Miami Carol City Senior High School

A talented dual threat quarterback, Akeem Jones passed for 1,516 yards and 16 touchdowns during his senior season at Miami Carol City High School. He is scheduled to visit Clemson next week although, Marshall is currently in the lead for Jones services.

Marshall Football: Three Additional Coaches Leave Staff

Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon revealed in today’s paper that three previously un-reported Marshall University football assistants have left the program. They include associate head athletic trainer Toby Harkins, director of high school relations Alex Schnizer, and assistant strength and conditioning coach Scott Wilks. Harkins is moving onto Illinois as the Fighting Illinis head athletic trainer, Schnizer is returning to his alma mater UT-Chattanooga, and Wilks is joining former Marshall head strength and conditioning coach Joe Miday at Western Kentucky.

*UPDATE* C-USA: FAU & MTSU to Arrive in 2013, Tulsa Open to Exit

*UPDATE*

Lots of moving parts in this story and we have a big update. First and foremost, Dieter Kurtenbach of the South Florida Sun Sentinel is reporting that talk of FAU and MTSU to C-USA in 2013 is premature. Apparently, the sticking point is the $1 million exit fee both must pay to leave the Sun Belt Conference. An early exit could still occur but, don't expect any thing by February.

Also, it appears that this story originated when C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky told the San Antonio News-Express that the league had plans for 14 teams this fall, including the Owls and Blue Raiders.

Finally, my speculation about ECU and Tulane to the Big East this year appears to be incorrect. In a interview with ESPN on January 8th, Big East commissioner Michael Aresco stated that his conference would stay at 10 football playing members this fall if they lose Boise State and San Diego.

*ORIGINAL POST*

Per the Twitter account of Sun Herald reporter Patrick MaGee, Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic University will join Conference USA a year ahead of schedule in 2013. Reports indicate that the early exits will be announced in February. FAU and MTSU originally accepted invitations to join C-USA in November with plans to leave the Sun Belt following the 2013 academic year.

Speculation on my part but, I don’t expect C-USA to host 14 football playing members next season. I believe ECU and Tulane will leave the conference early, joining Memphis, SMU, UCF, and Houston in the Big East for 2013.

If MaGee’s report and my speculation are correct, C-USA will look like this heading into next football season.

1) Marshall
2) Southern Miss
3) Louisiana Tech
4) UAB
5) FlU
6) FAU
7) MTSU
8) UTEP
9) UTSA
10) Tulsa
11) North Texas
12) Rice

Keep in mind, conference realignment is not over. It has become apparent that San Diego State will return to the Mountain West Conference and not move to the Big East. With the Aztecs exit, the Big East will be looking for another member. In today’s Tulsa World, it was indicated that Tulsa would be willing to exit C-USA if they received an invitation from the Mountain West or Big East.

Marshall Football: O-line Coach Geep Wade Leaving for MTSU

Per the website Coachingsearch.com, Marshall University offensive line coach Geep Wade is leaving for a similar position at Middle Tennessee State University.

Wade came to the Thundering Herd almost one year ago today, previously he had coached the offensive line at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Wade was specifically in charge of Marshall's guards and centers while offensive coordinator Bill Legg managed the offensive tackles.

Wade joins former quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen as offensive assistants that have left Marshall this off-season.

Marshall Football: PSU Transfer Kersey Enrolls at MU

First reported by Scout.com (subscription), former Penn State wide receiver Shawney Kersey has transferred to Marshall University. A redshirt junior, Kersey left the Nittany Lions football program two games into the 2012 season, citing "personal reasons".

Kersey is the third former Penn State football player to transferred to Marshall following the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, joining corner back Derrick Thomas and fellow wide receiver Devon Smith. As a graduate student Kersey should be eligible immediately with one season of eligibility remaining.

Standing six-foot-one, 197 pounds, Kersey was seldom used at Penn State. In four years he caught 12 passes for 154 yards. Kersey entered 2012 as the Nittnay Lions most experienced receiver, recording 44 receiving yards on six receptions before calling it quits.

For more on Kersey and his Penn State career, click here.

Marshall Football: S&C Coach Miday Leaving for Western Kentucky

Marshall’s football strength and conditioning coach Joe Miday has confirmed to the Huntington Herald Dispatch that he is leaving for the same position at Western Kentucky. Miday has worked with the Thundering Herd since 2007, rising to the rank of head football strength and conditioning coach last February. With his departure, Marshall will be looking for his fifth strength and conditioning coach in four years under Doc Holliday.

Speculation on my part but, you should expect assistant strength and conditioning coach Scott Wilks to take over Miday’s responsibilities on a interim basis. A former Marshall linebacker, Wilks joined the staff last February after a two year stint as Hofstra University’s head strength and conditioning coach.

*UPDATE* Marshall Football: Herd Recruiting Class in Good Shape for 2013

An error has been detected in regards to Marshall's average star ranking on Rivals.com. Just focusing on players that are listed as committed by Rivals.com, the Herd has 14 commitments. If you add up the stars of those 14 players you get 34. Anyway, to get the average star ranking you divided the number of stars (34), by the total number of prospects (14) and you get 2.42, not the 2.6 reported earlier. To be fair, Rivals.com also list Marshall’s average star ranking as 2.6 on their website.

Either way, it changes our rankings. Instead of having the best class in C-USA the Herd falls just a bit to fourth. Here is an update.

Rank-School-Average Stars
1) Southern Miss - 2.5
2) Tulsa - 2.5
3) FIU - 2.44
4) Marshall – 2.42
5) Rice - 2.31
6) Tulane - 2.29
7) ECU - 2.28
8) La.Tech - 2.27
9) UTEP - 2.2
10) UAB - 2.1
11) North Texas - 2.09
12) UTSA - N/A

*Original Post*
Yesterday Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon penned an article on Marshall's 2013 football recruiting class, calling it short on talent. While Landon does a good job listing the Thundering Herds verbal commitments, I don't believe he gives head coach Doc Holliday and company enough credit for bringing together a solid group of prospects.

First and foremost, you have to take Marshall's recruiting class into context. When considering this group keep in mind who will encompass Conference USA going forward. Based on the average star ranking provided by Rivals.com (which reflects a classes depth and standout players rather than sheer volume), the Herds recruiting class ranks first among teams that will belong to C-USA next season.

Rank-School-Average Stars
1) Marshall - 2.6
2) Southern Miss - 2.5
3) Tulsa - 2.5
4) FIU - 2.44
5) Rice - 2.31
6) Tulane - 2.29
7) ECU - 2.28
8) La.Tech - 2.27
9) UTEP - 2.2
10) UAB - 2.1
11) North Texas - 2.09
12) UTSA - N/A

Further more, Marshall is the only C-USA school that has multiple four star commitments, linebacker Stefan Houston, wide receiver Angleo Jean-Louis, and wide receiver Deontay McManus. Admittedly, none of those players could be eligible next season but last years three star plus non-qualifiers, linebacker Kent Turene, Clemson transfer Josh Brown, and former Louisville signee Larry Jefferson will have qualified by this August.

Also, like Landon mentioned Marshall has three weeks of recruiting left. The Herd has official visits scheduled with the following three star prospects, junior college offensive tackle Matt Finnin, athlete Mykal Moody, defensive back D'Andre "Chocolate" Wilson, and defensive back Da'Wan Hunte.

Rest assured Herd fans, if Marshall can hold onto its current verbal commitments and add a few more prospects it will represent another huge recruiting win in Huntington.

Marshall Football: Lakeith Murray Commits to Herd

Marshall has added another junior college safety to its 2013 recruiting class. Rivals.com is reporting that Lakeith Murray committed to the Thundering Herd..

As a senior at Florida's Lyman High School, Murray led Seminole County with six interceptions while registering 47 tackles. He signed a letter of intent with Football Championship Subdivision member Charleston Southern but it appears he never stepped foot on campus before enrolling at Venture Community College (CA).

This season at Venture, Murray recorded 31 tackles, two interceptions, and one sack. Standing six feet, 185 pounds he also had scholarship offers from New Mexico State and Wyoming.

Murray joins Marshall's other JUCO safety, Taj Letman in the Herd's 2013 recruiting class.

Marshall Football: McManus to Enroll at MU

Per multiple reports, Atlanta Sports Academy wide receiver Deontay McManus will enroll at Marshall University when the spring semester starts on Monday.

Coming out of Baltimore’s Dunbar High School, McManus signed a letter of intent with West Virginia but failed to qualify academically. McManus spent this fall at the Atlanta Sports Academy, the same prep school that produced Marshall linebacker Kent Turene and cornerback Corey Tindal.

As a high school senior McManus caught 38 passes for 561 yards and six touchdowns. He also played safety on defense. Rivals.com ranked McManus the 25th best wide receiver in the class of 2012 and a four star prospect.

At this time, it is unclear if McManus will be eligible next season.

Marshall Football: Pollard leaving staff, Dunlap to join?

First reported by the Twitter account of Huntington Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon, Marshall University cornerbacks coach Lytrel Pollard has resigned and will  join the coaching staff at Southern Miss. A former Golden Eagles football player, Pollard spent nine years as a assistant at Southern Miss in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Landon is also reporting that new defensive coordinator Chuck Heater has taken over Pollard’s responsibilities at cornerback while longtime West Virginia assistant and former Marshall defensive coordinator Steve Dunlap will be hired to coach the Thundering Herd’s linebackers.

On offense, Landon wrote that offensive coordinator Bill Legg will shift his position coach responsibilities from tight ends to quarterbacks.

If these moves come to fruition, Marshall will have one offensive assistant position left to be filled.

Marshall Football: Heater to be Named Defensive Coordinator

Citing informed sources, Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon is reporting that Temple defensive coordinator Chuck Heater will be named to the same position at Marshall University.

A longtime college football assistant, Heater has directed the Owls defense for two years. In 2011 Temple ranked 13th among Football Bowl Subdivision schools in points allowed, giving up less than two touchdowns per game. The Owls also finished 27th in rushing defense (123.92 YPG), 15th in passing defense (187.8 YPG) and 13th in total defense (311.8 YPG). An aggressive group, Temple lead the Mid American Conference with 33 sacks. A number of Owl defenders earned individual honors in 2011 including first team All-MAC defensive end Chris Jones and linebacker Tahir Whitehead, a second team selection.

Rejoining the Big East in 2012 Temple’s defense struggled, allowing opposing offenses to rack up 437 yards per game, ranking 90th in the FBS. The defense was further hindered by youth, leading tacklers Tyler Matakevich (110 tackles) and Nate Smith (75 tackles) were only freshman. Spearheaded by former Marshall defensive end John Youboty and his team leading five sacks, the Owls defense remained aggressive while sacking opposing quarterbacks 25 times, good enough for third in the conference.

Heater became available when former Temple head coach Steve Addazio left for Boston College and hired Don Brown as his defensive coordinator. New Owls coach Matt Ruhle did not offer Heater a spot on his staff.

Marshall head coach Doc Holliday and Heater were assistants together at Florida from 2005 to 2007, winning the 2006 National Championship. Over a 36 year coaching career Heater has also been a assistant at Utah, Washington, Colorado, Colorado State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Toldeo, and Northern Arizona. From 1972 to 1974 he was a standout running back at Michigan, rushing for 1,995 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Heater takes over for Chris Rippon who resigned in December after serving as defensive coordinator for three seasons.

Marshall Basketball: Herd Rolls over Tulsa 79-61

Box Score

Tom Herrion post game video

From the Marshall University Athletics Media Relations Staff:

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall led by as many as 29 points in a 79-61 rout of Tulsa in its Conference USA opener Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd improved to 8-8 overall and 1-0 in C-USA. The Golden Hurricane fell to 9-7 overall and 1-1 in C-USA.

“We played without any agendas tonight,” said head coach Tom Herrion.  “We played so cohesive.  On the bench, every guy contributed, and it was really good.  I’ve got great faith in my kids.  They’ve shown great character.  I’ve said this before, I’m proud to be their coach, and I’m proud to be the coach at Marshall.”

The Herd toughened up on its defense in the first half as Tulsa went nearly nine minutes (8:57) without a field goal and came up empty on 14 consecutive possessions. A three-pointer by DeAndre Kane, one of four from the junior guard, gave Marshall a 41-15 lead with 1:52 to play in the half.

Marshall led 43-20 at the half, the largest halftime lead ever by a Herd team in its eight seasons of C-USA play.

“In the first 20 minutes I thought (Dennis) Tinnon played as well as he’s played here without scoring a point in two years he’s been here,” Herrion said. “He had nine rebounds at the half.  His defense was the best defense he’s played since he’s been here. “

Tinnon finished the game with six points and 11 rebounds, the third consecutive game in which he led the team in boards.

The second half began with more of the same as a Tinnon jumper, his first of the game, gave the Herd a 55-26 lead, its largest of the game.

“Tonight was a game that Marshall came out and dictated the flow and tempo of the game,” said Tulsa head coach Danny Manning. “They made shots, they rebounded the ball, and we got behind early and couldn’t close the gap.”

Marshall shot 45.0 percent from the field while Tulsa shot 36.5 percent. The Herd was 12-of-32 from three-point range for 37.5 percent and had a favorable outing at the free throw line going 13-for-20 (65.0 percent).

Junior forward Elijah Pittman led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting including a 4-of-8 night at the three-point line.

Kane and fellow junior guard D.D. Scarver each scored 16 points. Kane enjoyed his best shooting day of his career as he was 6-of-9 from the field including 4-of-6 from three-point range. He also added seven assists and four rebounds.

Senior Robert Goff was 4-of-4 from the field for eight points and had four rebounds. Marshall outrebounded Tulsa 47-32.

Tulsa was led by James Woodard and Shaquille Harrison, each finishing with 12 points.

Marshall will next be in action on Saturday when it plays at El Paso at 9 p.m. ET.

Marshall Football: Petersen to be Named Offensive Coordinator at La.Tech

Per the Twitter account of Herald Dispatch columnist Chuck Landon, Marshall University co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen will join Skip Holtz’s staff at Louisiana Tech as offensive coordinator.

A record setting quarterback for the Thundering Herd in the late 80’s, Petersen started his second coaching stint at Marshall in 2010. Petersen is credited with turning Rakeem Cato into one of college football’s premier quarterbacks. The sophomore from Miami was named Conference USA’s 2012 MVP and led the Football Subdivision in completions per game (33.83), passing yards per game (350.08), and was third in touchdown passes (37).

Although Petersen was an integral member of Marshall’s coaching staff, fellow co-offensive coordinator Bill Legg serves as the primary play caller. You can assume that Petersen will handle those duties at La.Tech.

With the Bulldogs joining C-USA next season, it won’t be long before Petersen has a chance to coach against his alma matter.

Marshall Basketball: Amayo Leaves Program, Will Transfer

In a surprise move Marshall University freshman point guard Kelvin Amayo has left the basketball program and will transfer.

“We were surprised and caught off guard by Kelvin’s timing in deciding to transfer after a little over a week of practice and three games since becoming eligible,” said head coach Tom Herrion. “We wish him the best in the future.”

Amayo arrived at Marshall last January when he was ruled academically ineligible at Townson University. After sitting out a year and gaining eligibility, the New Jersey native played his first game in a Thundering Herd uniform on December 22nd against Kentucky. A non scholarship walk-on, Amayo averaged 2.7 points in 9.3 minutes of play during his three game Marshall career.

In a official release from the athletic department Amayo stated a desire to be closer to home (Newark New Jersey ) as his reason for transferring. “I want to thank Marshall University for giving me a chance,” Amayo said. “I just wanted to be closer to home.”

Although, in a interview with SNY T.V.'s ZagsBlog.com, Amayo indicated that he was promised a scholarship this semester which did not come to fruition.

“I want to thank Marshall University but they didn’t have an athletic scholarship for me and that wasn’t the deal we made,” Amayo told SNY.tv.

Speaking with Rick McCann of the Herald Dispatch, Herrion made it clear that Amayo was promised a scholarship next year, not this semester.

"After not showing up today for practice, later in the day Kelvin informed me via text that he has decided to transfer," Herrion said. "It has been brought to my attention that there is some sort of miscommunication.

"There was never a promise of any athletic scholarship for this academic year."

Marshall has been looking for consistent point guard play all season and Amayo's transfer further depletes a thin unit. In last Saturday's 37 point blowout loss at Ohio, Herrion used four players, Amayo, DeAndre Kane, Chris Martin and Tamron Manning to run the Herds offense but they combined for seven turnovers and only six assist.

Amayo's transfer adds another layer of frustration to Marshall's basketball season. The Herd returned to the hardwood last Wednesday after a ten day layoff and lost consecutive games to Delaware State and Ohio, dropping their record to 7-8.

Marshall opens conference play at home against Tulsa on Wednesday, tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
