Former Marshall Coach Donnie Jones Accused of Using Ex-Con to Recruit at UCF

From the New York Times:

CHICAGO — In late March, after the University of Tennessee fired Coach Bruce Pearl, a talented high school guard from the Atlanta area named Kevin Ware decided to rescind his commitment to the Volunteers. Considered one of the nation’s top 100 high school players, Ware drew interest from high-profile suitors like Georgia, Louisville and U.C.L.A.

Ware ended up picking the University of Central Florida, which has never won an N.C.A.A. tournament game and plays in a second-tier league, Conference USA.

Central Florida, it turns out, had an ally in its recruitment of Ware: Kenneth Caldwell, a Chicago man with a substantial criminal record and apparent ties to a prominent sports agency. Ware said Caldwell called him repeatedly to talk up Central Florida, traveled to Atlanta to meet with his family and even arranged joint phone conversations with the university’s basketball coach, Donnie Jones, and his staff — contact prohibited by the N.C.A.A.

Marshall Accused of Fudging Title IX Numbers

New York Times reporter Katie Thomas accused Marshall University woman’s tennis coach John Mercer of taking walk-on athletes who could not compete at the NCAA level to help satisfy Title IX requirements. Thomas also accused Marshall’s athletic department of encouraging woman’s athletics to accept walk-on’s while discouraging the same practice for men’s teams.

Here are the Marshall relevant parts of Thomas’s article:

Ever since Congress passed the federal gender-equity law known as Title IX, universities have opened their gyms and athletic fields to millions of women who previously did not have chances to play. But as women have surged into a majority on campus in recent years, many institutions have resorted to subterfuge to make it look as if they are offering more spots to women…….

At Marshall University, the women’s tennis coach recently invited three freshmen onto the team even though he knew they were not good enough to practice against his scholarship athletes, let alone compete. They could come to practice whenever they liked, he told them, and would not have to travel with the team……

South Florida is not the only university to open its rosters to women, no matter their skill level. Florida State and Marshall encourage their women’s coaches to accept many walk-ons — generally athletes who were not recruited — while often prohibiting or limiting the same practice on men’s teams.

At Marshall, John Mercer, the women’s tennis coach, added three freshman walk-ons to satisfy the athletic department’s 10-player team minimum. “They’re being nice and trying to help us fill the spots, to help our rosters,” he said. While practices are optional this year, a Marshall official said more will be expected of the walk-ons next year once their class schedules are arranged to accommodate regular practices.

The Office for Civil Rights does not require athletes to compete to be counted. Still, some have questioned why elite Division I programs are opening rosters to underqualified athletes.

Marshall Football: A.J Graham Sues Tallahassee FL / Police Department over 2009 Incident

From WCTV.TV, A.J. Graham Files Wrongful Arrest Suit Against TPD

Tallahassee, FL - Former Godby High School football star and All-State quarterback A.J. Graham, Jr., who won the 2009 “Mr. Florida Football Award,” filed a civil rights suit today against the City of Tallahassee Police Department for his wrongful arrest for a robbery on May 26, 2009. The charges were proven to untrue and later dismissed.

The suit identifies TPD officers who misled judges about the evidence against Graham. The TPD officers submitted an affidavit and search warrant application which falsely claimed that Graham had been “positively identified” as the robber, when in fact the robbe's face was covered with a bandanna. That information was also intentionally left out of a news release sent out by the TPD Public Information office........

Mario Harvey Receiving NFL Interest

From NFPOST.com via Yahoo.com: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=nfp-20110412_speedy_marshall_lb_mario_harvey_on_steelers_radar

Marshall linebacker Mario Harvey was ultra-productive for the Thundering Herd, posting 420 career tackles.

However, the All-Conference USA selection really boosted his NFL draft prospects with an outstanding 40-yard dash time during his campus Pro Day workout. He ran between 4.42 and 4.46 seconds. And the 5-foot-11, 250-pounder bench pressed 225 pounds 27 times with a 32 inch vertical leap, a 9-5 broad jump, a 4.19 short shuttle and a 7.13 three-cone drill.

The NFL definitely took notice. Harvey has visits with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals and the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

The Baltimore Ravens are another team that has displayed interest in Harvey, who arrived at Marshall as an undersized freshman with academic issues.

Last season, he recorded 143 tackles, 17 1/2 for losses, 8 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. As a junior, he posted 117 tackles, 8 1/2 for losses, seven sacks and was named first-team all-conference.

NFL.com, Jets Interested in Randy Moss?

NFL.com columnist Vic Carucci is reporting that former Marshall wide receiver and NFL free agent Randy Moss is receiving interest from the New York Jets:

Although Moss is 34 and is entering his 14th NFL season, there is at least one coach who believes he still can make a significant impact: the Jets' Rex Ryan. And Ryan, who isn't shy about much of anything, did nothing to conceal those feelings when he spoke with reporters at last month's NFL Annual Meeting about the pressure Moss places on a secondary as a true "vertical" threat.

The Marshall Thundering Blog will not be updated from Thursday April 7th through Monday April 4th. The blog will return Tuesday April 5th.

Coal Bowl Date Could Change

Per the Charleston Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/201104050953

THE SIXTH - and perhaps second to last - Coal Bowl may not be played on a Saturday, as previously announced on West Virginia and Marshall football schedules.

The Sept. 3 date at Mountaineer Field is now one of two first-week Big East home games listed on the conference schedule as "date subject to change." The other movable game is Wake Forest at Syracuse.

ESPN has not announced a Thursday or Friday game for that opening week, and since it's a week before the NFL is scheduled to open - even if the lockout ends with a labor settlement - the possibility of a Sunday afternoon or night Coal Bowl also exists on Labor Day weekend. "It's been informally discussed, but nothing has happened (to move the date)," said WVU Deputy Athletic Director Mike Parsons, who handles scheduling for the Mountaineer program. "It's a possibility, but there's nothing yet."

"Obviously, our focus is on the Big East and with TCU coming in 2012," first year Director of Athletics Oliver Luck explained. "We will have to wait and see what the Big East is going to do schedule-wise before we commit ourselves to another contract like the one we have now."

"The earliest season that fans hoping to see a continuation of the Friends of Coal Bowl can point to is 2016 when WVU's non-conference schedule has the Mountaineers taking on East Carolina, Maryland and BYU."
