Marshall Football: Matt Cincotta verbally commits to Herd

Matt Cincotta, a 6’0, 190 pound long snapper from Charlotte Catholic High School (NC) has verbally committed to Marshall. Even though he is listed as a linebacker, Cincotta was recruited for his long snapping ability. Currently, senior linebacker Tyson Gale handles the long snapping duties for Marshall, Cincotta was recruited to take his place.

Conference USA & Mountain West continue merger discussions

Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference have issued a joint statement on their continued efforts to explore a football only merger:

“Athletics directors and administrators at Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference enjoyed a productive exchange of ideas this week. In today’s dynamic intercollegiate athletics environment, we feel it is important to be proactive and creative. Our intention is to move forward together with this discussion and analysis at a focused pace.”

Marshall Football: Recruit takes long road to Huntington

By car, the trip from Suitland Maryland to Huntington West Virginia can take a bit more than seven hours. For one of Marshall’s 2011 football recruits that journey will take eleven months.

Levern Jacobs, a 5’11, 175 pound wide receiver from Suitland High School (MD) was set to become a member of Marshall’s 2011 recruiting class. A numbers crunch in the scholarship department derailed those plans and Jacobs found him self at Milford Academy (NY) for a prep school season. After five games Jacobs has caught ten passes for 179 yards and four touchdowns. His strong showing at prep school has lead Rivals.com to up Jacob’s rating from two to three stars.

Jacobs re-affirmed his commitment to Marshall earlier this month and will be eligible to join the Herd next semester. For more on Jacobs follow the links below:

Marshall Basketball: Three websites preview 2011-2012 Thundering Herd

Three national college basketball websites, The Dagger (Yahoo.com’s college basketball blog), the Sporting News, and MSG.com all took time over the past week to break down Marshall’s 2011 – 2012 men’s basketball team:

1. The Dagger talks to head coach Tom Herrion about the depth of C-USA and Marshall’s high expectations.

2. The Sporting News ranks Marshall 45th in it’s count down of the top 50 college basketball teams heading into this season.

Conference USA / Mountain West discuss possible merger

Representatives from Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference are meeting in Dallas this week to discuss a proposed football only merger. For more information read this Houston Chronicle story.

Marshall in the NFL: Week 3

Weekly review of Marshall Alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw lead the Giants in rushing with 86 yards on 15 carries. He also caught five passes for 53 yards and one touchdown during the Giants 29 – 16 win over Philadelphia.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

Playing special teams C.J Spillman registered one assisted tackle during San Francisco’s 13 – 8 win over Cincinnati.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Chris Crocker played a big role in Cincinnati’s defense on Sunday, recording three tackles and a half sack. The Bengals lost to San Francisco 13 – 8.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Doug Legursky left Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts with a separated shoulder. Reports indicate he should be able to play and start this week against Tennessee. Pittsburgh beat the Colts 23 – 20.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

* On injured reserved, broken arm.

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

Playing special teams Albert McClellan recorded one tackle during the Ravens 37 – 7 win over St. Louis.

7. Lee Smith, Tight End, Buffalo Bills

Lee Smith was on the Bill’s inactive list as they beat New England 34 -31.

Marshall alum named head football coach at New Mexico

Former Marshall football player George Barlow has been named interim head coach at the University of New Mexico, replacing the recently fired Mike Locksley. Barlow has served as New Mexico’s defensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

A standout safety at Marshall from 1986 – 1990, Barlow earner all Southern Conference honors during his time in Huntington.

Marshall Basketball: Stephon Blair visits Huntington, Spikes has knee surgery

Two basketball notes:

1. Stephon Blair, a 6’8, 210 pound forward from Dillard High School (FL) visited Marshall during last Saturday's Virginia Tech game. ESPN.com has Blair rated as the 45th best forward prospect in the class of 2012, rivals.com rates Blair as the 19th best center.

2. Marshall senior center Nigel Spikes underwent knee surgery today and will miss a period of time at the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Last season Spikes started 32 games and averaged 5.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Marshall Football: Verbal Commitment Watch, Week 6

1. Tyler Combs, OL, Lawrence County High School (KY)

Tyler Combs and Lawrence County broke a three game losing streak Friday night, beating Raceland 14 -12. Bluegrassrivals.com has a discussion thread about the game.

2. Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Devon Johnson rushed for 145 yards on seven carries with three touchdowns during Richlands 49-0 win over Patrick County. On Saturday Johnson took in Marshall’s 30 – 10 loss to Virginia Tech on a official visit.

3. Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

Trenton Norvell was involved in all four Seabreeze High School touchdowns as the Sandcrabs defeated Deltona 27 – 0 Thursday night. Through the air Norvell completed five passes on ten attempts for 78 yards and one touchdown. On the ground he rushed for 53 yards on nine carries with three touchdowns. Norvell made an official visit to Huntington on Saturday for Marshall’s game against Virginia Tech.

4. Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

In a overtime thriller Ryan Riedel and the Cabell Midland Knights defeated Huntington High 31 – 30 Friday night. The Cabell Midland defense allowed Huntington to gain 211 yards rushing and 106 passing yards.

5. Antonio Wells, DE, Magna Vista High School (VA)

Magna Vista remained undefeated Friday night, pulling out a 35 – 28 victory over Pulaski County. Antonio Wells made the trip to Huntington for an official visit during Marshall’s game against Virginia Tech.

Marshall Football: Strength coach resigns

Per the twitter accounts of Charleston Daily Mail reporter Chuck McGill and Herald Dispatch reporter Grant Taylor, Marshall football strength and conditioning coach James Townsend has resigned. No reason was cited for Townsend’s resignation.

Joe Miday, one of Townsend’s assistant, has taken his place on a interim basis.

Townsend was named Marshall’s strength and conditioning coach in June, replacing Scott Bennett, who was only on the job for six months.

PAC-12 stands pat, ramifications for C-USA?

The PAC-12 is staying put, the Big 12 has been saved from extinction, the SEC is one institution short of fourteen, the ACC might or might not be happy at fourteen, and the Big East has been hit hard but is still standing. It has been a wild month for college football, and that is not taking in account what has happen on the field. With the realignment picture still unclearer what ramifications lay ahead for Marshall University and Conference USA?

The Big-12 received a reprieve when the Pac-12 decided not to expand although, they still need help. Texas A&M is departing for the SEC leaving the Big-12 with just nine members. They could also lose another school if, as rumored, Missouri also joins the SEC. At least one C-USA school could be a potential target for Big-12 expansion. Former Southwest conference member SMU has already expressed interest and would immediately except an invitation to join the Big-12. Houston, with updated/new facilities planed for basketball and football could also be a prime target.

Just like the Big-12, Houston and SMU are potential targets for the Big East. Yesterday, all seven remaining Big East football schools met in New York and agreed to pursue additional members. The Big East is already adding one new football school next year, TCU. With just one Texas university the Big East might be interested in finding a travel partner for the Horned Frogs.

The Big East could also raid C-USA’s east coast institutions. It was rumored yesterday that East Carolina had filed an application to join the Big East. In the past both Memphis and Central Florida have openly campaigned to join a BCS conference. Although, the Big East has yet to publicly express interest in any C-USA school. In fact, reports surfaced that the Big East has been in talks to add Navy and Air Force as football only members. Adding football only members would be preferable for the Big East, they already support a sixteen team basketball league.

In a worse case scenario lets say C-USA losses Houston, SMU, ECU, UCF and Memphis. What schools would C-USA be looking to add in that dooms day scenario? Louisiana Tech would be an obvious choice. The Bull Dogs have openly campaigned for C-USA membership and there current conference, the WAC, does not make geographical sense. The departure of UCF would leave C-USA without a Florida school, something that the conference would look to rectify. With over 44,000 students and a improving football program Florida International would be a solid addition. FIU rival Florida Atlantic, set to open an on campus football stadium later this season, could also be a potential target. With Houston and SMU out of the picture C-USA might look to replace them with another Texas school. From the Sun Belt conference North Texas could certainly fill that void. Also from the Sun Belt, either Middle Tennessee or Troy have supported solid football programs and fit in C-USA’s geographical footprint.

There is no telling when the conference realignment machine stops spinning. When all is said and done it will be interesting to see where Marshall and C-USA stand.

Marshall Football: VT to honor 1970 Thundering Herd

I don’t often cut and paste whole press releases but I am making an exception here. Class move by Virginia Tech, an awesome tribute.

The Virginia Tech football program will pay tribute to the 75 victims of the 1970 Marshall plane crash, including Virginia Tech graduates Frank Loria and Rick Tolley who were coaches for the Thundering Herd, by wearing a special sticker on the back of the players’ helmets Saturday when the Hokies visit Huntington for the first time since 1940. The round stickers will have the initials RT and FL for the two former Tech players involved, as well as a 75 for the number of victims of the crash.

Upon arrival to the stadium, Tech head coach Frank Beamer will go to the Marshall University Memorial at Spring Hill Cemetery to place a 3x5 inch piece of HokieStone inscribed with the words that appear above the tunnel leading to Tech’s Worsham Field: “For those who have passed, For those to come ... REACH FOR EXCELLENCE” along with Loria and Tolley’s name, the numbers they wore at Virginia Tech and both teams’ logos.

Loria played for the Hokies from 1965-1967, helping Tech to a berth in the 1966 Liberty Bowl and was Tech’s first consensus All-American. He joined the Marshall University coaching staff in 1969 as the defensive backs coach. Loria played safety in the same defensive backfield with Beamer.

Tolley played football as a center and linebacker at Tech from 1958-61 and was the head coach of the Marshall football team during the 1969 and 1970 seasons.

Frank Loria, Jr., will handle the coin toss for Saturday’s game.

Marshall Football: Merger between C-USA and Mountain West?

Yesterday news broke that Conference USA and the Mountain West had re-opened talks on a possible merger. Instead of the full blown super conference talked about earlier this year the new discussions have centered around a football only merger. Under this system each league would play separate schedules and hold a mutual championship game, the winner receiving an automatic BCS bowl bid.

Obviously, any discussion about a Mountain West/Conference USA football championship game is in the infant stages. There is no guarantee that the BCS conferences (ACC, Big East, Pac 12, Big Ten, Big 12) would grant an automatic BCS bid to a MWC/C-USA champion. As the world of college football continues to change right before our eyes this will be another interesting story line to follow.

The Idaho Statesman reports that TCU has heard from the Mountain West about staying put instead of joining the Big East.

CBSSports.com first reported talks between C-USA and the MWC here.

ESPN.com talks with MWC commissioner Craig Thompson and C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky about a potential deal.

The Houston Cronicle speculates on what a MWV/C-USA merger would look like.

If a MWC/C-USA merger does not occur the Mountain West is also looking at the Big 12 for new members.

Marshall in the NFL: Week 2

Weekly review of Marshall Alumni in the NFL:

1. Ahmad Bradshaw, Running Back, New York Giants

Ahmad Bradshaw lead the Giants in rushing with 59 yards on 15 carries during New York’s 28-16 win over St. Louis. He also caught five passes for 45 yards.

2. C.J Spillman, Safety, San Francisco 49ers

Playing almost exclusively on special teams C.J Spillman recorded one tackle during San Francisco’s 27 – 24 overtime loss to Dallas on Sunday.

3. Chris Crocker, Safety, Cincinnati Bengals

Following up on last weeks impressive performance where he registered a sack and forced fumble, Chris Crocker failed to record any defensive statistics during Cincinnati’s 24 – 22 loss to Denver.

4. Doug Legursky, Guard/Center, Pittsburgh Steelers

Despite last weeks shaky performance Doug Legursky kept his starting job at right guard and helped Pittsburgh to 421 total offensive yards in a 24 – 0 win over Seattle.

5. Byron Lefwich, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers*

6. Albert McClellan, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

Albert McClellan registered his first ever NFL regular season tackle during Baltimore’s 26 – 13 loss to Tennessee.

Lee Smith was on the Bill’s inactive list as they beat Oakland 38 – 35.

Marshall Football: Verbal commitment watch, week 5

A weekly look at how Marshall’s verbal commitments performed during their high school football games:

1. Tyler Combs, OL, Lawrence County High School (KY)

Lawrence County lost their third game in a row Friday night, dropping a 35 – 6 decision to Letcher County Central. Can’t find a game story but I did pick up this interesting tidbit, Letcher County is quarterbacked by Logan Johnson, cousin of former Kentucky quarterback and NFL first round draft pick Tim Couch.

2. Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Devon Johnson had a huge night during Richlands 38 – 21 win over Pulaski, rushing for 199 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns on the ground. He also caught a pass for a touchdown.

3. Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

Despite a solid effort from quarterback Trenton Norvell that included 12 completions on 28 attempts for 139 and one touchdown, Seabreeze lost to DeLand 20-17 in overtime.

4. Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

Cabell Midland gave up three fumbles but still defeated South Charleston 27 – 21 Friday night. In another big defensive effort Ryan Riedel registered 15 tackles.

Magna Vista pulled out a close 28 – 26 win over Franklin County last week, keeping a perfect 4-0 record this season. Antonio Wells does not make the game story but you can read it here.

Marshall Football: Herd falls to Ohio 44 - 7

Box score from tonight's debacle at Ohio.

Few quick thoughts:

1. Was their any doubt this game was more important to Ohio?

2. I got worried about Ohio earlier this week when practice reports did not mention the same amount of focus leading up to USM. You know what they say, you play like you practice.

3. I think Marshall let the win over USM get to their head. Doc and the coaching staff won't let that happen again.

4. This loss will be part of Marshall's journey back to respectability. The Herd clearly did not know how to handle success after beating USM. Hopefully they learned that lesson.

5. When you start a true freshman quarterback he is bound to have games where he plays like a true freshman quarterback. Rakeem Cato needs to put tonight's game behind him and move on. Knowing the young man's outstanding character it should not be a problem.

Marshall Football: Herd schedules home and home with Akron

Marshall football has confirmed a home and home series with Akron. The Herd will travel to Akron in 2014 while the Zips visit Huntington in 2016.

Marshall’s 2014 out of conference schedule is now set with four games: @Miami (OH) 8/30, Ohio 9/13, @Akron 9/20, Louisville 9/27.

Marshall’s 2016 out of conference schedule has the Herd visiting Navy on September 3rd and hosting Akron September 17th. Two open dates remain to be filled.

Marshall Baseball: Herd receives verbal commitment from pitcher

Taylor Knicely, a standout senior pitcher at Robert E. Lee High School, verbally committed to Marshall University over the weekend.

An all Southern Valley District pitcher last season, Knicely hurled a no-hitter against Wilson Memorial in the district tournament last year. He two-hit the Hornets in the regular seasons, and Knicely also combined with Tyler Zombro on a two-hitter against Turner Ashby.

Doug Legursky received his first NFL opening day start, manning right guard for Pittsburgh on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Steelers offensive line allowed four sacks while only gaining 66 rushing yards against Baltimore. The Ravens crushed Pittsburgh 35 – 7.

Marshall Football: Verbal commitment watch, week 4

Tyler Combs, OL, Lawrence County High School (KY)

Tyler Combs and Lawrence County’s offensive line had a difficult time containing Perry Centrals defense, giving up three sacks in a 48 – 21 loss. No game story but I did find a box score.

Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Richlands dominated Graham Friday night, walking away with a 38 – 0 victory. Devon Johnson rushed for 111 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown.

Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

After only scoring seven points last week Trenton Norvell and the Seabreeze high school offense exploded on Friday night, downing Flagler Palm Coast 40 -13. Norvell completed 11 of 18 passes for 111 and one touchdown. He also rushed for 42 yards on eight carries.

Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

Former Marshall offensive lineman Luke Salmons got his first victory as Cabell Midland’s head coach Friday night as the Knights crushed Riverside 35 -3. Ryan Riedel and the Cabell Midland defense only gave up 213 total yards.

Antonio Wells, DE, Magna Vista High School (VA)

Magna Vista eked out a 14 – 9 win over William Fleming high school Friday night. Can’t confirm this but, it looks like Antonio Wells was held out for a second straight week during the victory. Besides playing defensive end Wells is Magna Vista’s primary running back, he did not register any stats against William Fleming.

Marshall Football: Charges dropped & immediate reinstatement for Troy Evans

Armed robbery charges filled against Marshall wide receiver Troy Evans two weeks ago have been dropped due to insufficient evidence. With the charges dropped Evans was immediately reinstated to the football team this morning.

Tyler Combs, OL, Lawrence County High School (KY)

Lawrence County had a tough night against Prestonsburg losing 26 – 6. Can’t find a game story but, bluegrassrivals.com has a discussion thread about the game here.

Devon Johnson, LB/RB, Richlands High School (VA)

Richlands needed a field goal in the final two minutes to secure a 24 – 22 win over Union. Devon Johnson and the Blue Tornado’s were held to only 74 rushing yards. With the victory Richlands improves to 2-0 on the season.

Trenton Norvell, QB, Seabreeze High School (FL)

Spruce Creek shut down Trenton Norvell and Seabreeze high school last Friday night winning 10 – 7. Norvell only completed four passes on 16 attempts for 65 yards and a interception. He also rushed for ten yards on six carries.

Ryan Riedel, LB, Cabell Midland High School (WV)

Cabell Midland dropped a barn burner last week, losing to Parkersburg 37-34. Ryan Riedel and the Knights defense gave up 292 yards including 138 on the ground.

Antonio Wells, DE, Magna Vista High School (VA)

Magna Vista routed Eden-Morehead 49 – 16 this past Friday. Antonio Wells, who plays running back and defensive end for Magna Vista, was held out with a injury.

The Friends of Coal Bowl between Marshall University and West Virginia has been called due to lightning with 14:49 remaining in the forth quarter. WVU has been ruled the winner as they were up 34 - 13 at the final weather stoppage.

Marshall in the NFL: Baldridge added to practice squad

After being cut yesterday, former Marshall offensive tackle Daniel Baldrige has been added to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. Baldridge spent the majority of last season on Jacksonville's practice squad after signing a undrafted free agent deal.

Marshall in the NFL: Lee Smith picked up by Bills

After being cut by the New England Patriots yesterday former Marshall tight end Lee Smith was added to the Buffalo Bills 53 man roster today.
