Marshall Football: 2011 preview, the secondary
As we inch closer to Marshall’s first game at WVU on September 3rd the Marshall Thundering Blog is breaking down the Herd’s roster position by position. Today we will focus on the secondary.
*Editors note – I have decided to abandon the best / worst case scenario format. The previews did not read well in current and future tense. Instead, I will just preview each position.
2010 Stats:
Omar Brown – 88 TKLS, 3 INTS
Donald Brown – 75 TKLS, 3 INTS
Rashad Jackson – 37 TKLS, 3 INTS
Monterius Lovett – 30 TKLS, 1 INT
Ahmed Shakoor – 30 TKLS
Darryl Roberts – 16 TKLS, 1 INT
Departing:
Donald Brown (dismissed from team)
Ahmed Shakoor (dismissed from team)
Joe Johnson (left team)
Returning/Incoming:
Omar Brown, senior
Rashad Jackson, redshirt senior
Monterius Lovett, redshirt sophomore
Darryl Roberts, sophomore
Devin Arrington, redshirt junior (moved from linebacker)
Phillip Warren, redshirt freshman
Derek Robinson, redshirt freshman
Corie Wilson, freshman
Keith Baxter, freshman
Raheem Waiters, freshman (moved from wider receiver)
D.J Hunter, freshman
Even McKelvey, freshman
Zach Dunston, sophomore
Derek Mitchell, redshirt sophomore
2011 Outlook:
Coming out of the 2010 season Marshall seemed to have a complete secondary back for 2011. Fast forward nine months and the picture has changed dramatically. Two big contributors last season, Donald Brown and Ahmed Shakoor have been dismissed from the program and a slew of injuries this summer has left Marshall thin at defensive back.
What Marshall lacks in stability at safety it makes up for at corner. The Herd returns two starters Rashad Jackson and Monterius Lovett while part time contributor Darryl Roberts is also back. Jackson appears to have locked up one starting corner spot while the other is up for grabs. Lovett is trying to retain his starting role but is being pushed by Roberts, and redshirt freshman Phillip Warren. True freshman Keith Baxter has been impressive during August practice playing both corner and safety, look for him to avoid a redshirt. Fellow true freshman Corie Wilson enrolled at Marshall in January and participated in spring practice, don’t be surprised if he plays right away too.
At free safety senior team captain Omar Brown returns for 2011. With Donald Browns dismissal in July Omar will be lining up with a new partner. Coming out of spring practice it appeared that freshman D.J Hunter was the answer. A former Tennessee commitment, Hunter wowed coaches during the spring but a knee injury has kept him out of preseason camp. The extent of Hunter’s injury is not know but he has started to ride a stationary bike. Attempting to find a strong safety Marshall auditioned Even McKelvey (Omar Brown’s brother), Derek Mitchell, converted linebacker Devin Arrington, converted wide receiver Raheem Waiters, plus cornerbacks Warren and Baxter. Returning from a knee injury Arrington has been practicing with the ones this week but just like quarterback, Marshall fans may not know their starting strong safety until September 4th.
Next preview: Special Teams

Two former Marshall athletes transfer to Charleston
Two former Marshall athletes, football player Ahmed Shakoor and basketball player Eladio Espinosa have transfered to the University of Charleston.
Shakoor was kicked off the football team in Februrary for a unspecified violation of team rules. He surfaced at UC this August and has been practicing at safety.
Last week Head basketball coach Tom Herrion announced that Espinosa would not be returning to Marshall after suffering a throat injury that limited him to 10 games in 2010. Espinosa joins former Marshall walk-ons Noah Fischer and Xavier Humphrey with the Golden Eagles.

Marshall Football: Walk on Cedric Walker joins Herd
Per Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail, Cedric Walker has joined Marshall's football team as a walk on. Listed at 5’8, 175 pounds, Walker played running back in high school (Gulliver Prep, Miami Florida) but is listed as a three star corner back prospect by Rivals.com. Since Walked signed a letter of intent at FIU he must sit out the 2011 season.

Marshall Football: 2011 preview, linebackers
As we inch closer to Marshall’s first game at WVU on September 3rd the Marshall Thundering Blog is breaking down the Herds roster position by position. Today will focus on the defensive line.
*Editors note – I have decided to abandon the best / worst case scenario format. The previews did not read well in current and future tense. Instead, I will just preview each position.
2010 Stats:
Mario Harvey – 143 TKLS, 8.5 Sacks
Kellen Harris – 68 TKLS, .5 Sacks
Devin Arrington – 64 TKLS, 1.5 Sacks
Tyson Gale – 46 TKLS
Trevor Black – 23 TKLS
George Carpenter – 16 TKLS
T.J Ross – 7 TKLS
Billy Mitchell – 1TKL
Departed:
Mario Harvey
Trevor Black (moved to defensive end)
Devin Arrington (moved to safety)
Returning/Incoming:
Kellen Harris, redshirt senior
Tyson Gale, senior
George Carpenter, senior
T.J Ross, sophomore
Billy Mitchell, redshirt sophomore
Armonze Daniel, freshman
Cortez Carter, freshman
Jermaine Holmes, freshman
Robert Way, freshman
Deon Meadows, freshman
Cameron Brown, freshman
Zach Wellman, redshirt freshman
2011 Outlook:
No unit has a bigger void to fill than Marshall’s linebackers. Gone is Mario Harvey, a first team all Conference USA selection in 2010 that registered 143 tackles and 8.5 sacks. Although Harvey will be sorely missed Marshall has a talented group of veteran leaders and newcomers to fill the void.
Coming out of preseason practice Marshall broke camp with an all upperclassman front at linebacker. Taking Harvey’s old spot on the weak side is redshirt senior Kellen Harris. Harris only started three games last year but played extensively, registering 68 tackles, and two forced fumbles. He also started all 13 games in 2009 at middle linebacker, anchoring C-USA’s 2nd rated defense. In the middle Tyson Gale is holding off a strong challenge by freshman Jermaine Holmes. Gale started eight games at middle linebacker last year and totaled 46 tackles. Taking the strong side spot is senior George Carpenter. Carpenter has spent the majority of his career on special teams but used a strong spring and preseason practice to secure a starting job.
All of the upperclassman listed above are being pushed by a strong group of incoming freshman. As previously mentioned Holmes is already fighting for Gale's spot at middle linebacker. In this past Saturday’s scrimmage Holmes started for the injured Gale and made four tackles with a fumble recovery. Fellow freshman Armonze Daniel and Robert Way should see action in reserve roles while Cortez Carter uses a redshirt. Deon Meadows is sitting out 2011 as a partial qualifier. Not to be lost in the shuffle are sophomores Billy Mitchell and T.J Ross. Both will play valuable roles on special teams and should see spot duty at linebacker.

NBA lockout helps D’Antoni aid Marshall
Nice story from the New York Post on New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni raising money for Marshall’s vision campaign. According to the article D’Antoni will the be Charleston South Carolina for a fundraiser today. Although, I have a sneaking suspicion the New York Post meant Charleston West Virginia, in the article they have John Sutherland listed as athletic director.

Marshall Football: Defensive back Shawn Samuels added to roster
Per multiple news outlets Marshall has added former UAB commitment Shawn Samuels to its roster. Samuels, a 6’1, 180 pound defensive back, signed a letter of intent with UAB in February but never stepped on campus prior to being released from scholarship. Coming out of Bainbridge High School (GA) Rivals.com listed Samuels as a three star recruit. Samuels will sit out the 2011-2012 season as a academic non-qualifier.

Marshall Men’s Basketball: Eladio Espinosa leaves basketball program
Due to a throat injury suffered during practice last January junior forward Eladio Espinosa will no longer play for Marshall’s basketball team. Espinosa sat out the 2009 season after transferring from the University of South Florida and averaged 2.1 points per game in 10 contest last year.

Marshall Football: Sebastian Johansson blog?
I can’t confirm this but it looks like Marshall freshman offensive lineman Sebastian Johansson has his own blog.
The blog, http://www.fourthandgoal.se/, has information about Johansson’s time at Marshall and his former team in Sweden.
Although much of the blog is written in Johansson’s native dialect it is definitely worth a look.

University of Miami allegations hit Herd assistant
On June 3rd Marshall basketball coach Tom Herrion announced the newest member of his basketball staff, former University of Miami assistant coach Jorge Fernandez. Yesterday, Yahoo Sports released a scathing investigation into Miami’s connections with convicted ponzi scheme operator Nevin Shapiro. The in-depth report details numerous NCAA violations conducted by Miami with the help of Shapiro.
Shapiro alleges that in 2008 Fernandez witnessed multiple Miami football players being entertained by the booster at a Miami night club in his VIP section. Also in 2008, the now convicted felon claims that Fernandez brought AAU basketball coach Moe Hicks to his home and saw Shapiro pay for Hicks drinks later that night at a Miami club. If true, both accusations represent clear NCAA violations.
Yahoo Sports put together a page that specifically deals with Shapiro’s accusations against Fernandez, you can see it here:

Associated Press: C-USA, ESPN settle lawsuit
From the Associated Press:
NEW YORK (AP) — Conference USA’s football championship games will now air on ESPN, not Fox, through 2015 after the league and network settled litigation.
ESPN sued the conference in March, accusing it of violating their contract when it signed a new deal with Fox. Conference USA announced in January it had reached a five-year contract with Fox’s networks to broadcast its football championship game and other sports events.
ESPN and Conference USA had signed a five-year deal in 2005, which included a provision giving ESPN exclusive rights to try to re-negotiate the package in 2010. The suit filed in federal court in New York claimed Conference USA did not satisfy the terms that would have allowed it to negotiate with other networks.
The two sides announced Tuesday that ESPN would televise the title game in 2011-15. The statement says: “The parties look forward to continuing their relationship going forward.”

Marshall Football: 2011 defensive line preview
As we inch closer to Marshall’s first game at WVU on September 3rd the Marshall Thundering Blog is breaking down the Herds roster position by position. Today will focus on the defensive line.
*Editors note – I have decided to abandon the best / worst case scenario format. The previews did not read well in current and future tense. Instead, I will just preview each position.
2010 Stats:
Vinny Curry – 94 TKLS, 12 Sacks
Michael Janac – 36 TKLS, 3 Sacks
Trevor Black – 23 TKLS, 1 Sack
Delvin Johnson – 20 TKLS, 1 Sack
James Rouse – 19 TKLS, 0.5 Sacks
Demetrius Thompson – 16 TKLS
Marques Aiken – 15 TKLS, 0.5 Sacks
Brandon Sparrow – 12 TKLS
Jeremiah Taylor – 9 TKLS, 1 Sack
Alex Bazzie – 6 TKLS
Brandon Bullock – 5 TKLS
Departed:
Michael Janac
Demetrius Thompson
Returning/Incoming:
Vinny Curry, redshirt senior
Trevor Black, sophomore
Delvin Johnson, redshirt senior
James Rouse, redshirt sophomore
Marques Aiken, redshirt sophomore
Brandon Sparrow, sophomore
Jeremiah Taylor, sophomore
Alex Bazzie, redshirt sophomore
Brandon Bullock, redshirt senior
Ra’Shawde Myers, freshman
Matt Pickett, redshirt sophomore
Malcolm Strong, redshirt freshman
Darien Moody, freshman
Jarquez Samuel, freshman
2011Preview:
Any conversation about Marshall's defensive line must start with Vinny Curry. Curry a 6'5 242 pound defensive end is the Herds most dynamic player and was named Conference USA's 2011 pre-season defensive player of the year. Coming off a season where he accumulated 94 tackles and 12 sacks Curry anchors a talented defensive front.
A fierce position battle has broken out for the end spot opposite Curry. Coming out of spring practice sophomore Jeremiah Taylor was listed as the other first team defensive end. He has impressed coaches this August but, with his size, 6'4 250 pounds, Taylor could find him self playing defensive tackle. If Taylor moves into the interior line a talented group of underclassman are egger for his spot.
A late addition in 2010, freshman Ra’Shawde Myers has stood out during the first week of pre-season camp. As a high school senior in Florida Myers picked up all state honors and at 6'4 215 pounds he could be a speed rusher off the end. Marshall also has bigger options opposite Curry including converted linebacker Trevor Black (6'2, 227), former walk-on Alex Bazzie (6'1, 228), redshirt sophomore James Rouse (6'5, 231), and true freshman Jarquez Samuel (6'5, 240).
In the middle Marshall losses Michael Janac but returns plenty more beef. Chief among the Herd's beefy interior lineman is Brandon Bullock. Bullock has suffered through weight issues his whole Marshall career and this season is no different, according to reports he arrived at August practice around 390 pounds. Head Coach Doc Holliday has Bullock running the stadium stairs until he reaches an acceptable playing weight. If Bullock can get into shape he could play a valuable role at nose tackle during 3-4 defensive sets. Playing a 4-3 front redshirt senior Delvin Johnson and sophomore Bradon Sparrow topped the post spring depth chart at defensive tackle. Johnson, a big contributor the past three seasons is sure to start while Sparrow will have to fend off Taylor and sophomore Marques Aiken to keep his starting job.
Next Preview: Linebackers

Marshall Football: 2011 offensive line preview
As we inch closer to Marshall’s first game at WVU on September 3rd the Marshall Thundering Blog is breaking down the Herds roster position by position. Today will focus on the offensive line.
*Editors note – I have decided to abandon the best / worst case scenario format. The previews did not read well in current and future tense. Instead, I will just preview each position.
2010 Stats:
Sacks allowed – 13 (tied for second fewest in C-USA)
Passing yards per game – 217.1 (9th in C-USA)
Rushing yards per game – 97.2 (11TH IN C-USA)
Departed:
Erik Vint
Landis Provancha
Chad Schofield
Brandon Campbell
Returning/Incoming:
Josue Joseph, freshman
Grady Kerr, redshirt freshman
Chris jaspers, redshirt freshman
David Rumley, junior
James Allen, redshirt freshman
Chris Bowers, redshirt junior
John Bruhin, redshirt senior
Anthony Spano, freshman
Trevor Mendelson, redshirt freshman
Corey Tenney, redshirt sophomore
Sebastian Johansson, freshman
Ryan Tillman, redshirt senior
Alex Schooler, redshirt sophomore
C.J Wood, senior
Garrett Scott, sophomore
Jordan Jefferies, redshirt sophomore
Josh Lovell, redshirt freshman
2011 Preview:
Last season the offensive line was a major sore spot for Marshall University. On numerous occasions head coach Doc Holliday openly questioned the o-lines desire and toughness. The good news is a majority of Marshall’s 2010 offensive line has graduated, the bad news is inexperienced underclassman are poised to take their place.
Seniors Ryan Tillman, C.J Wood, and John Bruhin will anchor an otherwise young offensive line. Tillman returns to his customary spot at left tackle while Wood and Bruhin could be playing new roles. After missing two seasons with a debilitating back injury Bruhin has been moved from center to right guard. The move was made to ease the load on Bruhin’s aching back. If Bruhin stays healthy you can expect Wood to play right tackle. On the other hand, if Bruhin is not able to go Wood could slide into his spot while underclassman Corey Tenney or Josh Lovell play tackle.
Speaking of underclassman a minimum of two will start along the offensive line. Redshirt freshman Chris Jaspers has been penciled in as the starting center. Jaspers, a former walk on, has been taking first team reps during practice but has been pushed by fellow redshirt freshman James Allen, junior Chris Bowers, and true freshman Anthony Spano. Sophomores Garrett Scott and Alex Schooler are battling to start at left guard.
Depth should be young but plentiful along the Herd’s offensive line. Besides the returning players who will not start Marshall added three scholarship freshman to its latest recruiting class, Josue Joseph, Sebastian Johansson, and Spano.
Next Preview: Defensive line
