Marshall Football: Stefone Grace Drops Commitment?

In today’s Herald Dispatch Chuck Landon is reporting that Stefone Grace should not be considered a commitment.

"Also, Stefone Grace is no longer considered a commitment."

Grace was originally part of Marshalls 2010 recruiting class but enrollee at Milford Academy (NY) due to grade issues. At Milford Grace did not play football because of a knee injury. Reports from earlier this fall indicated Grace would enrollee at Marshall in January 2011. At this time it is not known why Grace should not be considered a commitment.

RiverPalce Project Re-Works Financing Plan

From the Herald Dispatch:

HUNTINGTON — The developers of RiverPlace have scrapped their initial proposal to finance the project, but say the proposed baseball stadium, hotel and restaurant complex is still alive.

Lexington, Ky.-based developer Brad Burgess told Cabell County Commissioners on Tuesday morning that he and business partner Keith McGuire will not be able to meet a Dec. 31 deadline to sell $50 million in federally backed bonds for the project, which would be built between 3rd and 5th avenues a few blocks east of Marshall University’s campus……….

WVU Blog takes on Chuck Landon

The Smoking Musket, a blog dedicated to WVU sports has taken issue with Herald Dispatch writer Chuck Landon. In recent weeks Landon has penned a few scathing columns on WVU and Mountaineer athletic director Oliver Luck.

Now I am not typically inclined to defend Landon but the Smoking Musket paints a inaccurate picture of the HD sports columnist.

Smoking Musket Post on Chuck Landon: http://www.smokingmusket.com/2010/12/20/1887683/chuck-landon-is-the-ultimate-fanboy

Error #1: Seemingly unhappy in just being a Marshall beat writer for the Huntington Herald-Dispatch, Landon has started to devote more and more time to the Mountaineers.

Landon is not a Marshall beat writer for the Herald Dispatch, he is a featured columnist. Yes, Landon does dedicate a large number of his columns to Marshall but he also gives his opinion on a number of other subjects.

Error #2: ….I have accused Mr. Landon of being staunchly pro-Marshall.

I don’t think any Herd fan would say Landon is pro Marshall. If any thing he is an impartial observer, Landon gives credit and criticism when the situation warrants. I recall many negative articles towards former Marshall football coach Mark Snyder and athletic director Bob Marcum. Landon also wrote columns on a academic fraud case that involved Marshall athletes last year.

Error #3: And with his antics painted clearly above, that's quite a leap for someone with absolutely zero journalistic objectivity.

Landon is not suppose to be objective, he is a columnist, the Herald Dispatch pays him for opinion. Looks like he is doing a pretty good job, got the Smoking Musket all riled up.

Error #4: Mr. Landon, just stick to covering Marshall and leave WVU to the real journalists.

Real journalist? Landon has been recognized by the National Sports and Sports Writers Association as West Virginia’s sports writer of the year in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008. How many awards have the “real journalist” at the Smoking Musket won?

So congratulations to Chuck Landon for doing his job as a columnist, get people talking. I am sure Landon appreciates the additional web site visits because the Smoking Musket linked his article.

Marshall Football:Series with Navy in the Works

Jack Bogaczyk from the Charleston Daily Mail reports that a series between Marshall and Navy is in the works:

I'M TOLD Marshall is closing in on announcing a very attractive - and fan-drivable - future football home-and-home series with Navy.

Herd Athletic Director Mike Hamrick is beginning to fill some schedule vacancies that he'd held with the hopes of the WVU series continuing on an annual basis. That obviously isn't going to happen.

No word yet on when or where Marshall-Navy might start, but it isn't likely before 2014 or '15, because the Midshipmen don't have openings until then. They'll be the first service academy team to play in Huntington.

The only one of the three academies MU has played is Army, in 1920 and 1997, both at West Point. The latter game was the Herd's first victory after it returned to major college status.

Update on RiverPlace, Proposed Marshall Baseball Stadium

Missed this, from the December 5th Charleston Gazette: http://wvgazette.com/News/201012030962

Keith McGuire, one of the developers who want to build RiverPlace -- a proposed $250 million project that would include a hotel and baseball stadium in downtown Huntington -- said, "We are working diligently to get our bond issue together and sold."

The state Economic Development Authority has authorized RiverPlace to issue $50 million in bonds to help finance the project. The authority has said federal law requires that the developers sell the bonds by Dec. 31. McGuire acknowledged a tight time frame but said, "There is some leeway past that date" if certain conditions are met.

"We are still in negotiations with two or three people who are interested in buying the bonds -- large corporations that have the wherewithal to buy the bond issues," he said.

Whingham was set to enrollee at Texas Tech for 2010 but the wide receiver did not qualify and left for Marshall along with cornerback Philip Warren. Should Miami Consider Doc Holliday?

After last Saturdays 23 – 20 over time loss to South Florida, Miami University fired head football coach Randy Shannon. In four seasons at Miami, Shannon complied a 28 – 22 record and finished this season 7 – 5. Shannon was promoted to head coach from his defensive coordinator spot at Miami after the Hurricanes fired Larry Coker in November of 2006.

Rumors are already swirling about who will be Miami’s next head coach. Early candidates appear to be ESPN analysis John Gruden, Connecticut head coach Randy Esdall, ex-USF head coach Jim Leavitt, Georgia head coach Mark Richt, and Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. One name no one mentions is that of Marshall head coach Doc Holliday.

And why should they? Holiday is a one year head coach with a sub .500 record, not exactly a sparkling resume for one of college footballs power programs. If Gene Chizik was a long shot candidate at Auburn Holliday would be considered a moon shot for Miami. As a Marshall fan this pains me to say but if I were the U, I would take a hard look at Doc.

Why does Holliday make sense in Coral Gables? The most obvious reason is recruiting, Holliday has made a living by finding talent Florida. After being hired at Marshall in December of 2009 Holliday had a short 2 ½ months to recruit. In that small window of time Holliday added 11 commitments from Florida in a 25 man recruiting class. During his tenure at the University of Florida (2005 – 2007) Holliday served as the Gators recruiting coordinator and brought in many of the players responsible for two National Championships (2006 & 2008).

Holliday has also proven him self as a head coach. The Thundering Herd started 2010 1 – 6 before compiling a 4 – 1 record over the last 5 games to finish 5 – 7. While 5 – 7 might not sound impressive, finishing the year strong after a slow start is a testament to Holliday. A lot of teams, especially one under new management, would have folded after such a horrendous start but not Holliday’s Herd. Marshall also showed the ability to adapt during the season. After struggling on defense through the beginning of 2010 Holliday and defensive coordinator Chris Rippon switched Marshall’s defense to a 3 – 3 – 5 formation. The switch helped Marshall finish with Conference USA’s forth ranked defensive unit.

I don’t think Miami will be sniffing around Huntington any time soon. That is good news for Herd fans, I foresee a lot of victories at Marshall with Holliday in charge.

From a D.C Herd fan, Thank You Tom Herrion

Last summer new Thundering Herd head basketball coach Tom Herrion attended the annual mid-Atlantic Marshall University Alumni Association Crab Fest. Herrion was so impressed by the turn out and passion shown by Marshall’s mid-Atlantic alumni that he pledged to schedule a basketball game in the area. According to Chuck Landon’s article in today’s Herald Dispatch Herrion has attempted to do that. Unfortunately, his efforts to secure a basketball game in the area have not been successful, both American University and Towson have rejected the Herd’s offer of a home and home series.

As a Marshall alum in the mid-Atlantic region I wanted to thank coach Herrion for his efforts. Lets hope that another Washington/Baltimore area college takes Marshall up on its offer.
