Rick Minter to Coach in Bowl Game

From Doug Smock at the Charleston Gazette:

Defensive coordinator Rick Minter will serve as interim coach if Marshall plays in a bowl game. As a provisionally eligible team, there appears to be just one opportunity, albeit a likely one -- if Army loses to Navy, the Herd would take Army's spot in the Washington-based EagleBank Bowl on Dec. 29. There will be a long wait for that determination, as Army and Navy do not play until Dec. 12.

Eastman & Beaudine, to Help With Coach Search

It looks like Eastman and Beaudine will help with our football coach search, from Chuck Landon of the Herald Dispatch on June 10th 2010:

Speaking of executive recruitment firms such as Eastman & Beaudine, this is how they operate.
They are somewhat like a law firm on retainer.

When they are hired to do one job search, the client university also is obligated to the firm for the school’s next athletic job search.

Take SMU, for example.

Eastman & Beaudine handled the Mustangs’ search for a new athletic director. They successly landed Steve Orsini, who had been UCF’s athletic director, for SMU.

So, then, when the Mustangs were in the market for a new men’s head basketball coach, Eastman & Beaudine also filled that vacancy.

That’s how SMU got current coach Matt Doherty.

Orsini has worked out well.

Doherty?

Not so much.

It just goes to show that sometimes with executive recruitment firms, a university has to take the good with the bad.

Mark Snyder Quotes

“I met with Mike Hamrick (Director of Athletics) extensively today and we discussed our football program. I feel that it was in the best interest of our program for me to announce my intent to resign my position,” Snyder said. “It has been an honor to be the coach here and I will always be appreciative of the opportunity my university gave me.

“I want to thank all of the fans for their support and all of my players and assistant coaches for their hard work and dedication. I wish the program nothing but the best.”

Mark Snyder Resigns

HUNTINGTON — A lone lopsided loss didn’t result in Sunday’s Marshall University football head coaching change. Instead, numerous factors factored into Mark Snyder’s resignation, announced by athletic director Mike Hamrick.

"Mark and I met and had a long meeting," Hamrick said. "He thought it was in his best interests to resign.

"I met with him extensively and he told me is going to resign."

Hamrick and Snyder met with Marshall players Sunday following Snyder's resignation.
Snyder, a former Thundering Herd player and graduate assistant coach, had a 22-37 record in five seasons, including a 6-6 mark this seson.

Marshall’s regular season ended Saturday with a 52-21 defeat at UTEP, but with six wins the Herd is conditionally eligible for a bowl game invitation.

Alumni Update

Big news regarding two former Marshall stars:

With an injury to standout point guard Jerome Nelson the Orlando Magic have elevated Jason Williams into the starting five. Nelson will have surgery on his knee and is expected to be out 4 – 6 weeks. Williams has averaged 5.4 points and 4 assist per game coming off the bench this season. Read the whole story here: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/MarshallAlumni/200911180065

Today former Marshall quarterback Chad Pennington will see Dr. James Andrews to map out a rehabilitation program for his surgically repaired shoulder. At this point Pennington has not decided whether or not to play next season. From the article it appears that Pennington’s decision might hinge on his ability to compete for a starting spot somewhere in the NFL in 2010. Bowl Update

Found this in either the Charleston Gazette or Daily Mail, good news for any Marshall fan looking to visit D.C in late December:

(As an aside, an EagleBank Bowl official said this week that if Army cannot fill its spot - the Black Knights are 4-6 with games left against North Texas and Navy - the bowl slot goes straight to Conference USA, and not to seven-win teams from the national at-large pool.)

From this weekend.....

Thought I should post two stories that might have gotten lost in the weekend shuffle.

1. Marshall lost the C-USA men’s soccer tournament final to Tulsa in Oklahoma. The Golden Hurricanes defeated Marshall 3 – 0 to secure their third straight C-USA championship. Andy Katz Ranks the Conferences

Over at ESPN.com Andy Katz has ranked each college basketball conference and C-USA came it at number 8. C-USA is the second highest ranked non-BCS conference behind the Mountain West. Katz had this to say about C-USA:

8. Conference USA: The top of C-USA should be stronger than the MWC, with Memphis, UTEP, Tulsa and Houston all capable of winning the league and earning a berth. But the problem is the overall depth of the conference. The bottom of the league continues to drag down the top. Southern Miss should be improved and so, too, should Rice. But how will C-USA, without an elite Memphis, be viewed nationally?

Marshall Basketball World Wide

Even though the NBA is void of Marshall graduates there are a number of Herd players who have continued their careers overseas.

*Former NBA player and Marshall basketball star Tamar Slay has just started the Italian basketball season with Carmatic Pistoia. After five games Slay is averaging over 22 points per contest. Take a look at his complete stats here: http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=ITA&PlayerID=26858

*Last years leading scorer Markel Humphrey is playing in Holland with Matrixx Magix Nijmegen. After seven games Humphrey is averaging just over 11 points in 32 minutes of play. Take a look at his complete stats here: http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=NED&PlayerID=91148

*Former Marshall guard Chris Ross is playing professionally in the Philippines with Coca-Cola Tigers. Four games into the season Ross is averaging over four points and two assist. Take a look at his complete stats here: http://www.asia-basket.com/player.asp?Cntry=PHI&PlayerID=91150

*Another guard from the Ron Jirsa era Mark Dorris is playing in Europe. Dorris’s German team Cuxhaven BasCats has played six games this season while he is averaging 16 points in over 29 minutes of play. Take a look at his complete stats here: http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=GER&PlayerID=91147

Football Recruiting Note

Today the Charleston Daily Mail ran a big article about Marshall’s Junior College recruiting push this week. While the article mainly focused on the areas each coach would recruiting it did specifically mention one player Marshall is pursuing. Forlando Johnson is a linebacker at Butler County Community College (same school at Press Taylor) and is ranked by Rivals.com as the 16th best JUCO prospect in the nation. Johnson is receiving interest from multiple BCS schools including Ole Miss, Kansas State, and Kansas. Landing Johnson would be a huge catch for the Herds linebacker core which is loosing Mario Harvey and Brandon Burns to graduation.

A few notes from Thursday's game

*Hargrave Linebacker and Marshall verbal commitment Trevor Black told the Herald Dispatch he will be enrolling in January and is going to participate in Spring practice.

*According the Herald Dispatch another Hargrave player Marshall has there eye on is Safety Ross Madison. In 2008 Madison was a standout athlete at Heritage High School in Loudon County Virginia. He played both offense and defense in football and was a star basketball player. Madison has both a rivals.com and scout.com profile but is not ranked by either website.

*The Herald Dispatch also mentioned Marshall is pursuing Hargrave defensive back Ishmael Banks. According to Rivals.com Bank’s is carrying one official offer from Kent State. Much like Madison, Banks has Rivals.com and Scout.com profiles but no ranking.

Rally Around Soccer

We are coming off a tough loss in football and the basketball season is still a few days away so what is a Herd Fan to do? RALLY AROUND SOCCER! That’s right Marshall’s men’s soccer team has already secured a birth in the C-USA tournament and might even be the number one seed. If the Herd can beat UAB on Saturday and Tulsa ties or looses to UCF Marshall will get to host C-USA’s soccer tournament as the one seed. Even making the conference tournament is a huge accomplishment as only four teams qualify.

Lets make sure our guys have a nice crowd on Saturday night which might be but hopefully not our last home game of the season!

Saturday 7pm Sam Hood Field
Admission is Free!

Game Day!

Don’t forget Marshall is playing a sub-varsity game against Hargrave Military Academy today at 3pm. Gates at the Joan open up at 2:30 and admission is free. You can watch Hargrave standout and Marshall verbal commitment Trevor Black at linebacker. Please note that sub-varsity for Marshall means no scholarship athletes so don’t expect to see the likes of A.J Graham.

8 Man Football in West Virginia?

This is not totally Marshall related but the Charleston Daily Mail ran an interesting story about the prospect of small West Virginia High Schools (under 150 students available to play varsity sports) playing 8 man football. Former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett is heavily referenced and quoted in the story as a advocate of the 8 man game. Head over to the Daily Mail to read the whole article: http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/PrepSports/200911030763
