Rivals.com is less nuts
Rivals.com is a little less nuts this week. They have Darius Marshall, THE NATIONS SECOND LEADING RUSHER at number 16 in it’s weekly power rankings for division one football possessions. Marshall moved 6 spots from last weeks ranking. Meanwhile Cody Slate continues to move up the charts. This week Rivals has pegged Slate in the 7 hole, up two positions from last weeks rankings.

Darius Marshall Story on ESPN.com
Graham Watson of ESPN.com has written a nice story about Darius Marshall and his maturation process. The article chronicles Marshall's arrest in May and how it was a huge wake up call. It also mentions Marshall's two year old son Christian who lives in Georgia with his mother.
Although, the best part of the story for Herd fans was this:
Marshall isn't ready to think about the NFL just yet. The business major, who wants to open a five-star hotel one day, has no plans to leave school early because he promised his mother he'd get his degree. For now, he's focused on school and helping Marshall University (4-3) to its first winning season since 2003 and its first Conference USA East title. Currently, the Thundering Herd is second in the C-USA East standings behind East Carolina .

Rivals.com is still nuts
Rivals.com has released it’s week 7 power rankings for division one football possessions. Darius Marshall has again been unappreciated at running back, falling to the 22nd spot down from last weeks ranking of 19th. Meanwhile Cody Slate has moved up in the tight end rankings, reaching the 9th spot after last weeks 102 yard receiving performance.

We Are #108
Rivals.com has ranked Marshall at 108th in it’s 347 countdown, ranking every Men’s division one basketball team for 2010. This is what Rivals.com had to say about Marshall:
108. Marshall
CONFERENCE: Conference USA
BEST PLAYER: G Damier Pitts
QUICK TAKE: The Thundering Herd have the talent to get to 20 wins and into the postseason - not the NCAA tournament, though.
BUZZ: Coach Donnie Jones enters his third season with a team that holds a lot of intrigue. The Herd lost just one starter, but it was leading scorer Markel Humphrey. But there's a top-notch recruiting class, headed by 6-11 center Hassan Whiteside, the No. 87 prospect in the nation. The Herd were brutal on the perimeter last season, making just 31.7 percent of their 3-pointers and allowing foes to hit 39.8 percent. Whiteside adds another dimension to the team and gives the Herd an inside presence they desperately lacked last season.

In case you missed it from a number of today’s Marshall news stories Courtney Edmonson is out vs. WVU. Edmonson has been sidelined with a lingering hamstring issue since the opening moments of week one against Southern Illinois.
Going Bowling?
Found this over at http://www.herdnation.com/. Each week Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman at ESPN put together a Bowl Prediction list ( http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls/projections ). As of now Schlabach has us in the Eagle Bank bowl in Washington D.C at RFK Stadium against Army. Feldman has us playing Middle Tennessee State in the R + L Carries New Orleans bowl.
If we do not make the Liberty Bowl I would love to have us in Washington D.C for selfish reason. As a D.C resident I was lucky enough to see one Redskins game at RFK stadium before they moved to FedEx Field. I remember like it was yesterday. It was 1993 Richie Petitbon’s only year as Redskins head coach and I was sitting second deck with my Dad right between the goal post. It was one of few Redskin victories that season as Washington beat Atlanta 30 – 17. I have seen a lot of great games at RFK, every thing from MLS to MLB. My favorite moment was the Washington Nationals first home game in 2005. I turned in a English final early and drove seven hours down from Huntington for the game.
To put it bluntly RFK is a dump but it is my dump. I imagine you could relate it to Marshall fans feelings about old Fairfield Stadium. Besides the trip would be easy for Herd fans. As mentioned D.C is only 6 – 7 hours away from Huntington and there is a lot to do besides the game.
Either way I am getting ahead of my self. Have to get a few more wins before I start planning a December bowl trip.

Rivals.com is nuts
Rivals.com has released its weekly position power rankings for college football ( http://collegefootball.rivals.com/viewCFSE.asp ). Last week Darius Marshall was ranked as the 15th best running back, this week he has been downgraded to 19th. What was rivals reasoning for downgrading Marshall after a 98 rushing yard two touchdown performance “Tulane became the first team all season to hold him below 100 yards.”
Tulane did hold Marshall to just under 100 yards but they ignore his two touchdowns. Not to mention Marshall is still second in rushing yards per game behind Fresno State’s Ryan Mathews. What is rivals thinking? How many other running backs gained 100 yards against Virginia Tech this season? I swear if Marshall was playing in a BCS conference he would be no less than number two.
*Side Note: Rivals has Cody Slate listed as the 13th best tight end this week.

How to beat Tulane
Marshall will serve as home coming opponent when they travel down to Tulane this week. The Green Wave are coming off two victories over McNeese State and Army. Marshall suffered a heart breaking loss to conference foe East Carolina at home last week. So how do you beat the Green Wave?
As has been mentioned Tulane is a C-USA west member that plays like they are in the east. Tulane’s strong running attack is lead by Andre Anderson. Anderson has rushed for over 350 yards and 5 touchdowns this season. In both of Tulane’s losses Anderson has been held under four yards per carry. If Marshall’s defense can continue that trend victory should be within their grasp.
Tulane has a multidimensional offense lead by quarterback Joe Kemp. Kemp is one of C-USA’s most efficient passers with a quarterback rating over 150 although, he is interception prone. Kemp has thrown four interceptions to four touchdowns this season. Even if Albert McClellan is out the Herd needs to get pressure on Kemp and force him into bad decisions.
Kemp’s favorite target is receiver Jeremy Williams. As a senior Williams has caught for 525 yards and three touchdowns. He was also used at kick/punt returner last week and made an immediate impact on Tulane’s special teams. This will be Marshall’s third week in a row facing a dominate wide receiver (Freddie Barnes BGU & Dwayne Harris ECU) so the Herd should be experienced enough to shut him down. Hopefully we can have a repeat performance of last week as Marshall kept Harris in check, he only caught 6 passes for 57 yards including his lucky on the back reception.
On offense Marshall must feed the ball to Darius Marshall, who had another spectacular game against ECU but it might be another players legs that are equally important to victory. Tulane has had an extremely difficult time defending quarterbacks on the run. Every quarterback but BYU’s Max Hall has rushed for over 70 yards against Tulane’s defense. Brian Anderson is not the fastest QB but he had a few nice runs against ECU (5 rushes for 20 yards). If Anderson can make a few plays with his feet it will open up the passing game.
Marshall must find a way to throw the ball better. Last week Anderson was under constant duress against ECU’s aggressive defense. While the offensive line has been dominate run blocking their pass blocking has been suspect. Some one needs to step up in the receiving core besides Cody Slate. Last weeks second leading receiver was Antavious Wilson with only 3 receptions for 18 yards. Whether it be a healthy Courtney Edmonson, Wilson, or freshman Aaron Dobson at least one wide receiver needs to step up. Anderson also needs to do a better job getting rid of the football. Earlier this week he admitted to holding out for the big play against ECU instead of using his check down options.
Keys to Victory
1.Stop Andre Anderson
2. Pressure Joe Kemp
3. Cover Jeremy Williams
4. Run the ball, including Brain Anderson
5. Pass effectively

Cooking with low heat
Pat Forde of ESPN’s “The Dash” has Marshall head coach Mark Snyder on the low heat hot seat after five games this season. I would say his assessment is dead on:
“Mark Snyder, Marshall (3-2). The Thundering Herd have been better this year, but Snyder needs his first bowl bid in five seasons.”

Running Back Rankings
Rivals.com has Darius Marshall listed as the 16th best running back in college football. They also mention he leads the nation in rushing yards per game at 159.8. I might have my green colored glasses on but you figure the guy who leads every one in yards per game would be ranked a bit higher.

How to Beat ECU
Homecoming week is upon us as Marshall welcomes East Carolina to Joan C. Edwards Stadium this Saturday. Both schools are coming off wins as Marshall beat Memphis last week and East Carolina took care of business against Central Florida. So what are the keys to beating East Carolina?
Sorry if I continue to repeat my self but running the football is Marshall’s first key to victory. After sitting out game one Darius Marshall has been on fire and leads the NCAA in rushing yards per game. East Carolina has given up at least 100 yards rushing in three of four contest this season although that stat is a bit misleading. ECU has not given up 100 rushing yards to a single player, including WVU running back Noel Devine. It is fair to say that none of East Carolina’s previous opponents depend on one runner like Marshall does so this should be an interesting match up. Either way the Marshall needs to continue getting major yards on the ground to win Saturday.
The Herd’s second key to victory is stopping ECU wide receiver Dwayne Harris. Harris is a lot like Bowling Green wide out Freddie Barnes. Both are possession wide receivers that have the ability to break big plays. Even though Barnes caught for over 100 yards against the Herd Marshall held him without a touchdown or long reception. MU will need to do the same against Harris. ECU quarterback Patrick Pinkney completes 31% of his passes to Harris so he is going to get his touches but Marshall needs to minimize his effect to short gains.
Marshall’s last key to victory is avoid turnovers. Last week UCF coughed up the ball five times against East Carolina. Over all ECU is plus six in turnover deferential. Marshall must protect the football against a very opportunistic defense. Besides the Southern Illinois game Marshall has only had one turn over in each of it’s past three contest. This is especially important against an ECU team that has benefited from good field position to score. Pirates quarterback Pinkney has had a difficult time sustaining long drives, barely completing 50% of his passes and throwing an equal amount of touchdowns and interceptions. Giving ECU a lot of ground to cover on offense will only aid the Herd.
Keys
1.Run the Ball
2. Contain Dwayne Harris
3. Avoid turnovers
